Prologue
The bayou had never looked more beautiful.
As the sun disappeared beneath the horizon, thousands of lanterns suspended from ancient cypress trees illuminated the Blackwater Pack grounds with a warm golden glow. White magnolias, orchids, and moon lilies lined every pathway, their sweet fragrance carried by the gentle Louisiana breeze. Fireflies danced through the Spanish moss like tiny stars while candles floated across Blackwater Lake, reflecting the rising moon above.
Tonight…
The bayou wasn’t celebrating an Alpha.
It wasn’t celebrating a Luna.
It was celebrating a love story that had changed the fate of Louisiana forever.
Every pack in the state had gathered beneath the ancient oaks.
Some had traveled for days.
Others for weeks.
Even wolves who had once called one another enemies now stood side by side beneath the same moon.
Because tonight…
Alpha Malachi St. James was marrying his fated mate.
Luna Amara.
⸻
Inside Moon Hall…
Amara stood before a floor-length mirror while Mama Evelyn carefully adjusted the veil resting over her curls.
Neither woman spoke.
Neither needed to.
Mama Evelyn’s eyes shimmered with unshed tears.
“You keep looking at me like that…”
Amara laughed softly.
“…and I’m going to start crying.”
“Oh, baby…”
Mama Evelyn smiled through watery eyes.
“I’ve been waiting for this day since the moment that stubborn Alpha carried you through those front gates.”
Amara smiled at the memory.
She had arrived at Blackwater bruised.
Broken.
Terrified.
Convinced she was unworthy of love.
Now…
She barely recognized that frightened young woman.
A gentle knock sounded against the door.
“Come in.”
The door opened to reveal Zora wearing a deep emerald gown that perfectly complemented the bayou.
“You ready?”
Amara turned.
Her best friend froze.
For several long seconds…
She simply stared.
“Oh…”
Zora whispered.
“You look…”
She laughed as tears escaped her eyes.
“No.”
“I can’t even find words.”
Amara looked down at herself.
The gown flowed around her like moonlight.
Thousands of tiny crystals shimmered across delicate lace, while silver embroidery resembling winding vines climbed gracefully from the hem toward her waist. Off-the-shoulder sleeves framed her shoulders, and a long cathedral train stretched behind her like flowing water.
“It’s beautiful.”
Mama Evelyn smiled.
“No.”
She gently placed both hands on Amara’s cheeks.
“You’re beautiful.”
Zora stepped forward and wrapped Amara in a careful embrace.
“I always knew this day would come.”
Amara laughed.
“I didn’t.”
“I did.”
“You also thought Isaiah was secretly in love with me.”
“I was wrong.”
“Very.”
“But I was right about Malachi.”
Amara smiled.
“You were.”
A second knock interrupted them.
Coach Harris peeked inside.
“Ladies…”
He grinned.
“I’ve got an Alpha outside who’s wearing a hole in the grass pacing.”
The room erupted in laughter.
“Is he nervous?”
Coach Harris snorted.
“I’ve watched that man face rogue armies.”
He folded his arms.
“I’ve never seen him this scared.”
⸻
Outside…
Malachi stood beneath an enormous oak tree overlooking Blackwater Lake.
His tuxedo was perfectly tailored.
His hands were not.
They wouldn’t stop shaking.
Isaiah noticed immediately.
“You alright?”
“No.”
Isaiah laughed.
“Good.”
Malachi looked at him.
“Good?”
“If you weren’t nervous…”
Isaiah straightened his tie.
“…I’d question whether you understood what today means.”
Malachi looked toward the aisle.
“I’ve led warriors into battle.”
“Mhm.”
“I’ve stood before every Alpha in Louisiana.”
“True.”
“I’ve faced death.”
Isaiah nodded.
“You have.”
Malachi exhaled slowly.
“This is scarier.”
Coach Harris walked over, chuckling.
“You’ve got about five minutes.”
Malachi rubbed both hands over his face.
“I don’t think I can breathe.”
Coach Harris slapped his shoulder.
“You’ll be fine.”
“I don’t feel fine.”
“You will.”
Isaiah grinned.
“Unless she changes her mind.”
Malachi shot him a glare.
Isaiah laughed.
“I’m kidding.”
“You better be.”
“I am.”
Mostly.
⸻
As darkness settled over the bayou…
A violin began to play.
Every conversation stopped.
Hundreds of wolves rose to their feet.
The music echoed across Blackwater Lake as the first members of the wedding party stepped onto the flower-lined aisle.
Children scattered white magnolia petals with bright smiles.
Warriors stood proudly in matching midnight-blue formalwear.
Elders smiled through tears.
Then…
Everything fell silent.
Amara appeared beneath the archway.
Malachi forgot how to breathe.
The entire world seemed to disappear.
No music.
No guests.
No lake.
Only her.
His eyes immediately filled with tears.
Isaiah looked over.
“…You crying already?”
Malachi didn’t answer.
He couldn’t.
Amara slowly walked toward him, her eyes never leaving his.
Every step carried her farther from the pain that had once defined her life…
And closer to the future she never believed she deserved.
When she finally reached him…
Neither spoke.
Neither could.
Malachi simply reached for her hands.
“They’re shaking.”
She smiled through tears.
“So are yours.”
He laughed softly.
“I love you.”
“I love you too.”
“So much.”
“So do I.”
Elder Josiah stepped forward beneath the moonlit arch.
“My children…”
His weathered voice carried effortlessly across the gathering.
“We stand together beneath the eyes of the Moon Goddess.”
He smiled warmly.
He looked toward Amara.
“This young woman believed she was unloved.”
Then toward Malachi.
“This Alpha carried the weight of an entire pack on his shoulders.”
He looked at them both.
“Together…”
“You reminded us that strength without compassion becomes tyranny.”
“And compassion without courage cannot protect those we love.”
He raised his hands toward the full moon above.
“Tonight…”
“The Moon Goddess joins not only two mates…”
“But two destinies.”
Malachi never took his eyes off Amara.
“I, Malachi St. James…”
His voice trembled.
“…promise to choose you every morning I wake.”
“I promise to stand beside you in peace.”
“And in war.”
“I promise to protect your heart as fiercely as I protect this pack.”
“And I promise…”
He smiled through tears.
“…that no matter how many years the Moon Goddess gives us…”
“You will never wonder if you are loved.”
Amara wiped tears from her cheeks before speaking.
“I, Amara St. James…”
“…spent most of my life believing I had no place in this world.”
She looked into his eyes.
“You gave me a home before you ever gave me a title.”
“You loved me before I knew how to love myself.”
She squeezed his hands.
“I promise to stand beside you through every season.”
“I promise to remind you that even the strongest Alpha deserves someone to lean on.”
“I promise that our home will always be filled with laughter…”
“…with family…”
“…and with love.”
“And every day I am blessed to live…”
“I will choose you.”
Again.
And again.
And again.
Elder Josiah smiled.
“By the authority entrusted to me by the Moon Goddess…”
“And witnessed by every pack in Louisiana…”
“I now pronounce you…”
“Alpha and Luna.”
“You may kiss your mate.”
Before the words had fully left his mouth…
Malachi pulled Amara into his arms.
The kiss was gentle.
Unhurried.
Filled with every promise they had just spoken.
The crowd erupted.
Cheers echoed across the bayou.
Wolves howled toward the heavens.
Fireworks burst above Blackwater Lake in shimmering silver and sapphire.
At that exact moment…
The full moon overhead slowly deepened in color.
Silver…
Became crimson.
A Blood Moon.
The cheering gradually faded.
Every wolf looked skyward.
Elder Josiah’s smile disappeared.
Mama Evelyn’s eyes widened.
“The Blood Moon…”
she whispered.
Coach Harris frowned.
“It wasn’t supposed to happen tonight.”
The crimson light washed over the bayou.
For a brief moment…
The Bayou Crown resting upon Amara’s head shimmered with an ancient silver glow.
No one noticed.
Except Elder Josiah.
His heart sank.
He looked from the glowing crown…
To the crimson moon overhead.
Then quietly whispered words only the wind carried away.
“The next chapter has already begun.”
Far beyond Blackwater…
Deep beneath forgotten waters…
Something ancient opened its eyes.
