Chapter 1

Friday mornings always felt different in Ravenwood.

By seven o’clock, the town was already awake. Students filled the sidewalks leading to Ravenwood High, local businesses hung red-and-black banners in their windows, and conversations all seemed to end the same way.

Game day.

Football wasn’t just a sport in Ravenwood, it was tradition. Whether you cared about it or not, everyone knew Friday night belonged to the Ravens.

For Carter Hayes, it also meant everyone already knew his name.

He pulled into the student parking lot a few minutes before the first bell, shut off the engine of his black pickup, and grabbed his backpack.

“Morning, Hayes!”

Carter looked up and smiled.

“Morning.”

As he crossed the parking lot, more students wished him luck. Some nodded as they passed. Others stopped him just long enough to remind him not to lose tonight.

He answered each of them the same way—with an easy smile and a promise to do his best.

Inside, Ravenwood High buzzed with excitement.

Cheerleaders taped BEAT BLACKRIDGE posters across the walls while teachers greeted students from their classroom doors. Championship banners stretched across the hallway ceiling, and trophy cases gleamed beneath the fluorescent lights.

“Good luck tonight, Carter,” Mrs. Bennett called.

“Thanks.”

Before he could continue, the main office door opened.

“Mr. Hayes.”

Carter turned.

“Morning, Principal Whitmore.”

Principal Amelia Whitmore smiled as she stepped into the hallway.

“I’ve already had parents asking if we’re bringing home another win tonight.”

“I’ll do my best.”

“I know you will.” She adjusted the tablet tucked beneath her arm. “Just remember to keep your head in the game. College scouts love talent... but they love discipline even more.”

Carter nodded.

“Yes, ma’am.”

As she disappeared back into the office, her words lingered longer than he wanted them to.

“CARTER!”

An arm wrapped around his shoulders.

“You ready to send Blackridge home crying tonight?” Noah asked with a grin.

Carter laughed.

“You know it.”

“They don’t stand a chance.”

“They better not.”

A few football players rounded the corner.

“Our quarterback!”

One after another, they greeted Carter with handshakes and shoulder bumps.

“Who’s taking the win tonight?”

“The Ravens!”

The hallway erupted into chants of—

RAVENS! RAVENS! RAVENS!

Students cheered while teachers shook their heads, pretending not to enjoy the school spirit.

Carter couldn’t help smiling.

For a moment…

It felt like nothing in the world could go wrong.

The first bell echoed through the school.

Carter slid into his seat beside Noah in AP U.S. History just before Mrs. Reynolds closed the classroom door.

“Took you long enough,” Noah whispered.

“I’ve been here.”

“Busy signing autographs?”

Carter rolled his eyes.

Mrs. Reynolds cleared her throat.

“Yesterday we discussed the Monroe Doctrine.” She scanned the room. “Who can tell me its primary purpose?”

Silence.

“Carter?”

“It warned European nations against creating new colonies or interfering in the Americas,” he answered. “The United States wanted to keep the Western Hemisphere free from further European colonization.”

“Exactly.”

Noah sighed dramatically.

“Can somebody else be smart for once?”

The class laughed.

“You could’ve answered,” Carter said.

“No chance.”

Across the aisle, Eli Brooks quietly turned another page in his notebook without looking up.

If Noah was the loudest person in the room…

Eli was the quietest.

Mrs. Reynolds reached for a stack of quizzes.

“Only two students earned a perfect score.”

She looked down.

“Carter Hayes.”

Then….

“Eli Brooks.”

Noah shook his head.

“I swear you two make the rest of us look bad.”

Even Eli cracked the faintest smile.

Carter glanced down at the bold 100 written across the top of his paper.

It should’ve felt satisfying.

Instead, all he could think about were Principal Whitmore’s words.

College scouts love talent… but they love discipline even more.

The pressure never really left.

The bell rang, sending students into the hallway.

“Carter.”

He turned to find Mrs. Evelyn Brooks waiting in the doorway of the guidance office.

“Do you have a minute?”

“Sure.”

He followed her inside, taking his usual seat across from her desk.

She opened a folder filled with scholarship packets and college brochures.

“I won’t keep you long.”

She flipped through a few pages.

“Syracuse. Penn State. Rutgers. Boston College.” She smiled. “You’ve got schools waiting on your decision.”

“I’m grateful for the opportunities.”

“I know.”

She slid one final brochure across the desk.

Michigan.

His dream school.

“You still thinking about this one?”

Carter nodded.

“Every day.”

“I think you’ve got a real shot.”

“I hope so.”

Mrs. Brooks closed the folder.

“Can I ask you something?”

“Of course.”

“How are you doing?”

Carter smiled.

“I’m good.”

“You’ve been telling me that for two years.”

He looked down for a moment before standing.

“I should get to class.”

She wasn’t convinced.

“If you ever decide you don’t want to carry everything by yourself…”

She offered a gentle smile.

“…my door is always open.”

“I know.”

He returned the same practiced smile she’d seen countless times before.

“Thanks, Mrs. Brooks.”

As the door closed behind him, she sighed quietly.

“One of these days…”

By lunchtime, the excitement surrounding the game hadn’t faded.

The football team occupied their usual table while conversations echoed throughout the cafeteria.

Jordan slid over as Carter and Noah arrived.

“Look who finally showed up.”

“We thought Brooks kidnapped you,” Mason added.

Noah pointed at Carter.

“She was giving him another one of her life talks.”

Jordan winced.

“Brutal.”

Across the table, Eli read a history book while eating.

Jordan stared.

“Can you put the book away for five minutes?”

“I’m reading.”

“Exactly my point.”

Even Mason laughed.

The conversation quickly shifted to tonight’s game.

Then two girls stopped beside the table.

“Good luck tonight, Carter.”

“I’ll be cheering extra loud.”

“So will I,” another added.

Noah watched them walk away before sighing dramatically.

“I’d like to report a crime.”

Jordan looked over.

“What crime?”

“Being painfully single.”

The table erupted with laughter.

Across the cafeteria, whispers spread from table to table.

“That’s Carter Hayes.”

“I heard Michigan’s coming tonight.”

“My brother said NFL scouts might be there.”

Carter pretended not to hear them.

He’d learned long ago that people liked talking about him as though he wasn’t sitting right there.

“You nervous?” Mason asked.

“A little.”

“You’ll be fine.”

“I know.”

From the outside…

His life looked perfect.

Sometimes he almost wished it was.

Practice was faster, louder, and sharper than usual.

Coach Marcus Donovan wasn’t letting anyone coast through the final workout before the biggest game of the season.

“Again!”

Jordan sprinted down the sideline.

Carter dropped back and launched the football.

Jordan caught it in stride and crossed into the end zone.

“There we go!” Noah shouted.

On defense, Mason barked instructions before stuffing the next running play behind the line of scrimmage.

Coach Donovan nodded.

“That’s what I like to see.”

An hour later, the team gathered at midfield.

“Tonight isn’t just another game,” Coach Donovan said.

The players fell silent.

“We’ve got recruiters coming from Syracuse… Penn State… Rutgers… and maybe a few more.”

He looked directly at Carter.

“They’re coming to see what our quarterback can do.”

Every eye turned toward him.

Coach Donovan rested a hand on Carter’s shoulder.

“You’ve earned every opportunity in front of you.”

“Yes, Coach.”

“I know what you’re capable of.”

He gave Carter’s shoulder a firm squeeze.

“Play your game.”

A small smile crossed Carter’s face.

“I will.”

Coach Donovan nodded.

“I know you will.”

Then came the words Carter couldn’t shake.

“And don’t let me down.”

The team broke apart.

To everyone else…

They were words of encouragement.

To Carter…

They felt like another weight he couldn’t afford to carry.

Carter arrived home just before sunset.

The house was as quiet as always.

“Dad?”

“In here.”

Daniel Hayes stood in the kitchen, flipping through paperwork beside a half-empty mug.

“Practice ran late.”

Daniel nodded once.

“Dinner’s in the oven.”

They ate mostly in silence while the television quietly previewed tonight’s rivalry game.

Finally, Daniel spoke.

“You ready?”

“As ready as I’ll ever be.”

He studied Carter for a long moment.

“When you’re out there…”

He paused.

“…keep your head.”

“I will.”

“I’m serious.”

“I know.”

Daniel gave a single nod before returning to his paperwork.

Nothing else needed to be said.

The roar of the crowd grew louder as Carter approached Ravenwood Stadium.

The stands were packed.

The marching band warmed up near the end zone while cheerleaders finished one last routine beneath the Friday night lights.

“Carter!”

A local reporter stepped into his path.

“One question before kickoff. Feeling any pressure with all the recruiters here tonight?”

Carter smiled politely.

“It’s football.”

The reporter laughed.

“That’s it?”

“That’s it.”

Slow applause echoed from behind him.

“The famous Carter Hayes.”

Carter turned.

Logan Mercer stood a few yards away wearing Blackridge’s navy-and-silver jacket, a football tucked beneath one arm.

“I expected you to be taller,” Logan said with a smirk.

“I expected you to be quieter.”

Jordan covered his mouth to hide a laugh.

Logan stepped closer.

“I heard Michigan’s here.”

“So I’ve heard.”

“It’d be a shame if they watched you lose.”

Carter met his eyes.

“Guess we’ll find out.”

“Hayes.”

Coach Donovan’s voice cut through the tension.

“Locker room.”

Without another word, Carter walked away.

Minutes later, the Ravens stood together inside the tunnel.

“This is our house!” Coach Donovan shouted.

The team roared back.

Smoke cannons fired.

The announcer’s voice thundered across the stadium.

“Ladies and gentlemen… your Ravenwood Ravens!”

The team burst onto the field.

The crowd exploded.

Carter jogged toward midfield before instinctively glancing toward the home bleachers.

He always looked.

He never expected to find what he was looking for.

Then…

He froze.

Near the middle of the stands sat a man wearing a Ravenwood cap pulled low over his eyes.

Daniel Hayes.

His father.

For the first time in years…

He was actually there.

Carter’s grip tightened around his helmet.

Why now?

Across the field, Logan Mercer adjusted his helmet before looking up.

Their eyes met.

One smirked.

The other couldn’t stop staring into the stands.

The referee raised his whistle.

The ball was about to be kicked.
