Chapter 1: The Silver Shatters
Prague, Kingdom of Bohemia (Austrian Empire), 1864
The scent of damp stone and pine needles hung heavy over the edge of the Bohemian woods overlooking the Vltava River.
Ren ran his fingers through Sayo’s dark hair, his thumb tracing the soft curve of her cheekbone. Under the pale, silver glow of the European moon, her skin seemed almost luminescent against the dark velvet of her cloak.
"The sun will be up soon," Sayo whispered, her fingers knotting into the wool of his tailored coat. "The morning breeze is picking up across the valley."
"Let it," Ren murmured, leaning down to press a kiss against her forehead. His smile was effortless, carrying the easy, magnetic charm of a young noble who believed the world was theirs for the taking. "To me, the moon is just a lantern lit for us tonight. Let the morning wait."
They were young, foolish, and hopelessly entangled. Sayo was the daughter of an exiled Japanese scholar seeking refuge in Europe; Ren was the charismatic heir to a prominent local aristocratic house. By every law of high society and family honor, their love was an impossibility. Yet here, beside the mossy stone arches of the ruined Gothic chapel at the forest’s edge, destiny felt malleable.
Then came the heavy crunch of gravel behind them.
Ren’s posture shifted instantly. His charismatic warmth vanished, replaced by a sharp, protective poise. He shielded Sayo behind his back as three men emerged from the shadows—guards wearing the crest of his father’s estate.
"Lord Ren," the lead retainer said, his hand resting on the pommel of his sword. "Your father commands your return. The foreign girl is a stain on the family honor. She will not leave these woods."
"Run, Sayo," Ren whispered without turning back.
"Ren, no—"
"Run!"
Steel sang as blades were drawn. Ren moved like a gale of wind, stepping between Sayo and the advancing guards. He fought with fierce brilliance, disarming the first attacker in the narrow thicket, but he was hopelessly outnumbered.
A cold blade pierced through the side of his chest.
Ren gasped, blood blooming across his white shirt. He fell to one knee, but his silver eyes remained fixed on Sayo, who was screaming his name, frozen in horror.
"I... promised..." Ren choked out, blood coating his lips as the moon above suddenly turned blindingly white, engulfing his vision in a roaring, searing light.
And then, his heart stopped.
