Chapter 1: The Auction of Fate
The bitter bite of freezing air seeped through the thin silk of Aria’s gown, but it was the suffocating silence of the grand marble ballroom that truly terrified her.
She stood frozen behind a thick, crimson velvet curtain. Her wrists were tightly bound with ornate golden silk cords that chafed against her delicate skin every time her hands trembled. On the opposite side of that heavy fabric lay the dark underbelly of high society—a ruthless gathering where elite billionaires, underground syndicate bosses, and shadow brokers assembled for a singular purpose: trading debts for lives.
And tonight, her father’s insurmountable gambling debts had cost him the only collateral he had left—her.
Aria swallowed the lump in her throat, her chest heaving as tears threatened to spill over her long eyelashes. She remembered the cold, detached look in her stepmother's eyes when the armed men came to their estate at midnight. She remembered her father avoiding her gaze, muttering a faint, “It’s the only way to save the family name, Aria.”
Family name, she thought bitterly, her hands clenching into tight fists. I was never family to them. Just an insurance policy.
Suddenly, the harsh, metallic screech of a microphone cut through her thoughts.
"Ladies and gentlemen, esteemed guests," the auctioneer's smooth, theatrical voice echoed across the massive hall. "We arrive at item number four. A rare specimen of absolute purity. High lineage, untouched, and utterly unburdened by ties to the outside world."
Aria’s heart hammered against her ribs like a captive bird trying to shatter its cage. No. Please, God, no, she prayed silently, squeezing her eyes shut.
"Bring out the asset," the auctioneer commanded.
The velvet curtain was pulled back violently. Blinding, white spotlights slammed onto Aria, temporarily searing her vision. A collective wave of low murmurs, gasps, and hungry whispers rippled through the sea of men sitting in the dark, leather-bound armchairs below. Dozens of predatory eyes locked onto her trembling frame.
"The starting bid for Miss Aria starts at five hundred thousand dollars," the auctioneer announced, raising his wooden gavel.
"Five hundred thousand!" a voice called out from the front row.
"Seven hundred thousand!"
"One million!"
The numbers flew through the air like lethal arrows. Men waved their numbered paddles with sick, greedy smiles, evaluating her as if she were a piece of fine art or a thoroughbred horse. The sheer humiliation sent a wave of nausea crashing over Aria.
"Two million!" shouted an elderly man with a wicked sneer, sitting near the stage.
"Two million dollars to Lord Harrington!" the auctioneer yelled, his voice rising in excitement. "Do I hear two point five? Going once—"
"Ten million."
The voice wasn't loud, nor was it shouted. It was a deep, velvet baritone that carried a lethal, suffocating authority. It cut through the chaotic noise of the room instantly, freezing the entire crowd into a dead, terrified silence.
The atmospheric pressure in the grand hall seemed to drop by ten degrees in a fraction of a second.
Aria snapped her eyes open and looked toward the upper level. Tucked away in the shadows of the central VIP balcony stood a tall, broad-shouldered man. He was dressed in a pristine, custom black suit that clung flawlessly to his powerful frame. He held a crystal glass of amber whiskey in one hand, swirling it casually as if he hadn't just thrown down a fortune without blinking.
Even from across the massive room, his presence was staggering—an aura of absolute dominance that demanded total submission. But what made Aria’s breath lock firmly in her throat were his eyes.
In the dim light of the balcony, his irises weren't brown or black. They glowed with a faint, metallic gold hue—unnatural, dangerous, and utterly predatory.
Not human, a quiet, terrifying voice whispered in the deepest depths of Aria’s mind. Run.
The auctioneer cleared his throat, his hands visibly shaking as he looked up at the balcony. "T-Ten million dollars... offered by Mr. Vance. Going once... going twice..."
CRACK!
The sound of the gavel striking the wooden block felt like a thunderbolt echoing inside Aria’s head.
"Sold to Mr. Damon Vance!" the auctioneer squeaked.
Shockwaves of hushed whispers spread across the floor. Damon Vance. Even Aria, isolated as she had been, knew that name. He was Vance Enterprises' ruthless CEO, an enigmatic billionaire who controlled major shipping ports, finance empires, and land contracts across the globe. But rumor had it that his true power lay in shadows no ordinary human dared to explore.
Before Aria could process what had happened, two burly guards in black tactical suits grabbed her by the arms and dragged her off the stage. They maneuvered her down a maze of dimly lit, marble-lined hallways toward the private executive suites at the back of the venue.
They pushed her through a massive oak door, slamming it shut behind her. The lock clicked with a finality that sounded like a prison cell door shutting forever.
Aria stumbled, her heels catching on the plush Persian rug. She stabilized herself, her heart hammering wildly against her ribs as she scanned the grand, dimly lit room.
Standing near the floor-to-ceiling glass window overlooking the dark pine forest outside was Damon Vance.
He slowly turned around. In the soft glow of the wall sconces, his features were carved with lethal perfection—a sharp, angular jawline, pitch-black hair styled with effortless precision, and those terrifying, intense gold-flecked eyes.
He took a slow, deliberate step toward her.
With every single stride he took, the air in the room grew heavier, thicker, until it felt like liquid lead in Aria’s lungs. A rich, intoxicating scent filled her senses—a mixture of cedarwood, crisp night rain, and something primal, wild, and dangerous.
Aria backed away instinctively until her spine slammed hard against the cold wooden door. "S-Stay away from me," she whispered, her voice cracking with terror.
Damon didn't stop. He closed the distance effortlessly until he was towering over her small frame. His sheer physical size was overwhelming. He raised a long, scarred hand and lightly traced his knuckles down the side of her delicate neck.
The moment his bare skin touched hers, a jolt of pure electricity shot straight through Aria’s bloodstream. A strange, burning warmth flared in her chest, making her gasp out loud.
Damon bent down, leaning his head into the crook of her neck. He took a deep, shuddering breath, inhaling her scent deeply as a low, rumbling sound vibrated from the depths of his chest. When he pulled back slightly, his eyes had shifted entirely—the gold had bled away into pure, midnight obsidian.
"I didn't buy you to be your master, little bird," Damon growled, his deep voice thick with a dark, possessive promise. "And I didn't spend ten million dollars to clear a human debt."
Aria gripped the edge of her dress, her breathing ragged. "Then... then why am I here? What do you want from me?"
Damon raised his hand, his thumb gently brushing across her trembling lower lip. A dangerous, breathtaking smirk pulled at the corner of his lips.
"I bought you because your blood called to mine the moment you stepped onto that stage," Damon whispered, his breath warm against her ear. "I bought you because you belong to me... Mate."
Before Aria could process the insane word, the heavy oak doors behind her exploded open with a deafening crash!
