Summary

Cassian is the most powerful man in this world. A king before whom entire kingdoms tremble. A man whose power is so immense that hardly anyone dares to look him in the eye—let alone defy him. But that power comes at a price. An ancient, untamable force lives within his veins. A beast that demands more and more, slowly threatening to tear Cassian apart from the inside. There is only one way to prevent it. A catalyst. The vessel of his bond. A person capable of absorbing his excess power, calming the beast, and keeping Cassian from one day being destroyed by his own strength. For years, he searches in vain. Until he finds Arden. Proud. Insolent. Beautiful. And filled with a hatred for Cassian almost as powerful as the attraction ignited by the bond between them. Arden was supposed to be Cassian's salvation. His vessel. Something that belonged to him and submitted to his will. Instead, he is the first man in a very long time who dares to bare his teeth at the Beastmaster.

Kapitel 1

I am the King.

The fucking King.

My power is so absolute, so limitless, that there is no one who can stop me.

They have tried.

Gods, how often they have tried.

Other kings had sent their armies against me, convinced that all they had to do was throw enough soldiers against my walls to eventually bring me to my knees. Men who believed themselves invincible had declared war on me and sworn they would see my kingdom fall.

They had all failed.

One after another, some faster than others. And those foolish enough to try a second time usually had not lived long enough to make the same mistake a third.

I had won battles in which other men would have lost hope at the mere sight of the enemy army. I had watched kingdoms fall and men kneel before me who had sworn they would rather die than submit to me.

No one could defeat me.

And yet, by now, I knew that the very power that had made me invincible all these years would sooner or later be the thing that brought about my end.

Because my most dangerous enemy was not standing outside my gates.

It was inside me.

My beast.

Something that grew stronger with every fucking year. More dangerous than any wild animal and more primal than anything this world had ever seen. An ancient force rooted deep within my blood, a part of me since the day I was born.

I felt it every single day.

That primal side of me pushed harder and harder to come to the surface. It wanted to break free, tear through my skin, reshape my bones, and finally take the form that lay hidden deep inside me.

And I did not know what would happen if, one day, I was no longer strong enough to hold it back.

As long as I controlled the beast, it granted me strength far beyond anything an ordinary human could ever possess. My senses were sharper, my body stronger, and my reflexes faster. Even injuries that would have killed other men had rarely kept me down for more than a few days.

It made me the most dangerous man in this world.

But with every passing year, controlling that power became more difficult.

For a long time, I had refused to heed my father’s words, probably because I had been an arrogant bastard.

I probably still was.

My father had explained to me early on that the beast needed a channel into which it could release some of its excess energy. A connection that would bind me to another person and give the beast something to hold on to.

The old man had spoken of love.

Love.

The thought alone had almost made me laugh again.

When I was younger, that was exactly what I had done. I had looked at my father as though he had gone senile and told him that I certainly did not need another person to control something that lived inside my own fucking body.

Least of all some great, fated love.

What utter bullshit.

I was Cassian.

The Beastmaster King.

I needed no one.

But in all the years since my father had died, I had found myself thinking about his words more and more often.

Not the part about love.

I was nowhere near that desperate yet.

Instead, I had begun to wonder whether perhaps he had been right about the beast needing someone it could bind itself to.

Because by now, its power had become so immense that even I could no longer ignore it as completely as I had before.

It was powerful, dominant, and destructive.

Sometimes I felt as though it would tear me apart from the inside, as if my not-quite-human body had long since become too small for whatever lived within it.

With every passing day, I could feel the beast lurking closer beneath my skin. Sometimes I could almost feel its claws, the fur that could not possibly be there. A tingling sensation crawled across my back and tore me from sleep in the middle of the night, while a dull pressure formed deep within my bones, as though they were already trying to change.

Some days, I even thought I could hear a faint cracking whenever the beast grew particularly restless.

And then there was the primal power.

That ancient magic crawled beneath my skin like something alive.

Sometimes it revealed itself for no more than a fraction of a second, a greenish shimmer following my veins, traveling across my hands or flickering along my throat before vanishing just as quickly as it had appeared.

But even those brief moments were enough to remind me of what lay hidden deep inside me, waiting to be set free.

That the beast was waiting to tear me apart from within.

It grew stronger with every passing year and more impatient.

Perhaps one day, it would no longer wait for me to release it willingly. Perhaps, eventually, it would simply decide that it had been imprisoned long enough and take what rightfully belonged to it.

Me.

The magic from which my beast had been born was ancient. Older than my kingdom, older than the walls of my castle, and probably older than many a realm whose name had long since vanished from the history books.

For generations, it had run through my bloodline, passed from father to son. It had already raged through my father’s veins, just as it had through his father’s and all the men who had come before them.

But with me, it was different.

With me, it was stronger.

Much stronger.

Even my father had known that.

I still remembered the way he sometimes looked at me when I was younger. It had not been pride, nor had it been the usual concern of a father for his son.

It had been awe, mingled with deep-seated fear.

Back then, I had liked that look.

The thought that even my own father recognized the power slumbering within me had only fueled my youthful arrogance.

I had believed myself special. Stronger than all those who had come before me.

And I had been right.

Because the power had never stopped growing.

Year after year, it had continued to swell, burrowing deeper into my body and claiming more and more space for itself. Yet by now, I could no longer deny that eventually there would come a point when even my body would no longer be capable of containing it.

And what would happen then, no one knew.

Perhaps the beast would take me over completely and leave nothing behind of the man I had once been.

Or perhaps we would destroy each other.

And yet, all these years, I had ignored what my father had warned me about. I had been too intoxicated by my own power, too convinced that different rules applied to me than to the men who had come before me.

And why would I have believed otherwise?

After all, I had always won.

The beast had given me everything I needed, and I had taken it willingly. Its strength, its power, and that intoxicating energy racing through my veins, making me feel as though nothing and no one in this world could ever defeat me.

So I had pushed aside the warnings of a dead man and convinced myself that I would continue to remain in control.

Year after year.

Until I could no longer ignore what had been lurking just beneath my skin all along, waiting for my control to falter just once.

But now...

that was about to change.
