Chapter 1 The World That Never Sleeps
📖 CHAPTER 1:
---
The room was dark except for the cold blue glow of three monitors stacked side by side.
A girl sat cross-legged on a black gaming chair, her face half-lit by lines of scrolling code. Black oversized hoodie. Hair tied up messily. Fingers moving across the mechanical keyboard like they were born there.
She wasn't gaming. She was working. The kind of work people like her did in silence. Quiet. Invisible. Untraceable.
Her name was Jinju. At least, that's what her Korean ID said.
Her real name was Rosé. That's what her American passport said — the one buried deep in a locked drawer. The one nobody in Seoul knew about.
She was twenty-two. Orphaned. Dual citizen. Fluent in two languages. Fluent in silence.
A cup of black coffee sat beside her keyboard. Cold. Always cold. She never finished it in time.
The apartment around her was minimal — bed unmade, walls bare, one window permanently covered by black curtains. No posters. No photos. No signs of a personal life. Just monitors, cables, a blinking router in the corner.
Jinju didn't have friends. Didn't want them. She had her grandmother in America — the woman who'd raised her after the accident. Halmeoni. The only person who still called her Rosé.
"I'm fine, Halmeoni. Yes, I ate. No, I'm not lonely."
Lie. Lie. Lie.
Jinju's parents had died when she was seven. A car accident on a rain-slicked highway outside Seoul. Her mother was Korean. Her father was American. College sweethearts. Married against both families' wishes. Built a life across two continents.
Then, one night, one wet road — it all ended.
She grew up in Boston with her grandmother — a quiet woman who smelled like lavender. Jinju learned Korean from books, online forums, sheer stubbornness. At twenty, she moved to Seoul alone.
Not to find herself. She knew who she was.
She moved to disappear.
A girl with two names, two passports, and zero attachments could go anywhere. Could be anyone.
Her fingers paused. A news notification blinked in the corner of her screen.
ECLIPSE LANDS IN INCHEON — FANS IN FRENZY
She stared. One second. Two.
Swiped it away.
---
The internet was burning.
Twitter. YouTube. Naver. Every platform, every hashtag, every trending topic — all of it belonged to ECLIPSE.
Seven members. Five years since debut. One of the most successful K-pop groups in global history.
At Incheon International Airport, the arrivals gate had transformed into a concert venue before the concert even happened. Silver and midnight blue lightsticks glowed like a captured galaxy. Banners in twelve languages. Screams so synchronized they sounded rehearsed.
Fans — LUNAR — had been waiting since dawn. Some had flown in from other countries just for ten seconds. Ten seconds of watching seven men walk from the gate to black vans.
That was it. That was enough. That was everything.
The sliding doors opened. The crowd erupted.
---
Kwon — leader, main rapper, backbone. Walked first. Phone to ear. Nodded once at the crowd. Screams doubled.
Doha — main vocalist. The voice that made stadiums weep. Earbuds in. Lazy wave. A girl sobbed.
Yuna — lead dancer, face of the group. Magazine covers in twelve countries. Didn't wave. Just looked. Smiled slightly. Cameras devoured it.
Sion — main dancer, chaos energy. Bounced through the terminal. Pointed at banners. Laughed. Nearly crashed into a security guard.
Haneul — variety king, mood maker. Waved with both hands. Blew kisses. Shouted "LUNAR! SARANGHAE!" Tripped over nothing. Laughed loudest.
Zero — rapper, producer, mystery. Shadow passing through light. Head down. No wave. No smile. Just presence.
And then — Kai.
Maknae. Lead vocalist. Center. Youngest.
Walked last. Black hoodie. Black mask. Black cap. Didn't wave. Head slightly down.
When he looked up — just once — the screaming changed. Sharper. More desperate.
Dark eyes swept across the crowd.
A girl in the front row dropped her lightstick. Didn't pick it up.
Kai looked away. Kept walking.
Doors closed behind him.
---
Two days blurred past.
ECLIPSE's schedule was a beast that never slept. Photoshoots. Interviews. Variety show recordings. Dance practice. Vocal rehearsal. Soundcheck. And in between — stolen moments of almost-normal life.
Day 1, Morning.
Kai went live from his hotel room. Bare face. Messy hair. Old t-shirt. Sat cross-legged with cereal.
"Kai oppa, did you sleep well?"
"Marry me."
"I flew from Brazil to see you!"
"Do you ever feel lonely?"
He paused. Smile flickered.
"I have LUNAR. I'm never lonely."
Chat exploded with hearts.
Ended the live. Stared at the blank screen. Didn't move.
Day 1, Evening.
Dinner. Seven members. Private room. Ramyeon. Fried chicken. Soju for hyungs. Cola for Kai.
Sion and Haneul fought over the last chicken piece. Yuna filmed it. Zero ate in silence. Kwon watched like a tired father of six.
Kai laughed — real laugh, eyes crinkling. For a moment, he was just a boy. Surrounded by brothers. Happy.
The moment passed.
Day 2, Evening.
Soundcheck. Empty stadium. 70,000 silent seats. Cold.
ECLIPSE ran through their set list. Positions. Formations. Mic levels. Kai stood at his mark — center-left, where he always stood. Sang his parts. Hit his notes. Moved through choreography on muscle memory.
Normal. Like every other soundcheck.
Sion messed up a step on purpose. Haneul nearly fell over laughing. Yuna corrected a formation. Zero adjusted his in-ear. Kwon ran through everything with military precision.
Kai just... performed. Like always. One of seven. Doing his job.
Soundcheck ended. Back to hotel. Early call time tomorrow.
---
Concert Night.
The stadium was alive.
70,000 lightsticks moved in perfect synchronization — silver and midnight blue waves crashing against the stage. LUNAR had turned the venue into an ocean. Sound deafening. Energy impossible.
ECLIPSE performed like they had something to prove.
Kwon commanded the stage. Doha's high notes shattered hearts. Yuna moved like water. Sion flew. Haneul made 70,000 people laugh. Zero rapped like poetry.
And Kai — Kai performed.
His parts. His lines. His choreography. His moments in formation. Group choruses. Harmonized bridges. Synchronized dance breaks.
Smiled when the camera found him. Waved at fans. Did his job.
Nothing special. Nothing different. Just Kai. One of seven. Exactly like the others.
Final song. Confetti exploded. Silver and midnight blue streamers rained down. Members lined up, arms around each other, bowed together.
Kai stood between Sion and Haneul. Breathing hard. Sweating. Exhausted. But smiling — a real one.
Kwon took the mic. "LUNAR... thank you. This is because of you. Everything is because of you."
Screams. Thunderous.
Lights down.
Concert over.
---
Late That Night.
Somewhere across Seoul, in a neighborhood Kai would never visit, in a room he would never see, a girl in a black hoodie stared at three glowing monitors.
Jinju had worked through the entire concert. Hadn't watched a single fancam. Hadn't checked the trends.
But a notification glowed.
ECLIPSE CONCERT — SEOUL — SOLD OUT
Trending: #ECLIPSE_Seoul #LUNAR
She glanced at it. One second. Two.
Didn't click.
Minimized it.
And went back to work.
