The End of us
The rain poured softly outside as Amara stared at her phone screen. The messages she had read over and over again still didn’t feel real.
“I think we should end things.”
Her hands trembled as tears rolled down her cheeks.
How could someone who once promised forever suddenly become a stranger?
She curled up on her bed, hugging her pillow tightly as her chest ached.
A notification appeared on her phone.
Liam: Hey... are you okay?
She ignored it.
A few seconds later, another message came.
Liam: I know things happened between you two. Please don’t stay alone tonight.
Fresh tears filled her eyes.
Liam was her ex-boyfriend’s friend. They had never been particularly close, but somehow, he always noticed when something was wrong.
Amara: I’m fine.
Three dots appeared instantly.
Liam: No, you’re not.
For some reason, those three words broke her completely.
No one had noticed she was pretending.
No one except him.
A knock suddenly came from downstairs.
Her mother called out, “Amara, someone is here for you!”
Confused, she wiped her tears and slowly walked downstairs.
When she opened the door, her eyes widened.
Standing there in the rain, holding a small bag of snacks and hot chocolate, was Liam.
“I thought you shouldn’t be alone tonight,” he said softly.
At that moment, for the first time since her heart had broken...
she didn’t feel completely alone.
