CHAPTER 1: THE REQUEST
The locker room smelled of sweat, expensive cologne, and cheap ego.
Jason Vance sat leaning against his locker, staring down at his phone with a bored expression. Around him, the rest of the varsity football team was loud, obnoxious, and predictably crude.
"I'm telling you, Vance, you couldn't pull it off if you tried," Marcus scoffed, tossing a sweaty towel into a hamper. "Getting the hottest sorority girl is easy work for you. But sleeping with the most unattractive girl on campus? The one nobody looks at? That's the real test."
Tyler threw a stack of cash onto the bench. "Fifty bucks says you can't get the most unattractive girl into bed by the post-game party this Friday. A real challenge, Vance. No glitz, no glam. Just raw pull."
Jason’s eyes narrowed. Beneath the cocky quarterback facade that he let his teammates see lay a calculating, razor-sharp mind one that effortlessly aced advanced finance and literature classes while letting his friends assume he barely scraped by. He picked up the cash, a cold, ruthless smirk spreading across his face.
"Keep your money ready, boys," Jason said softly, his voice dropping into that chilling, arrogant tone his team adored. "Friday night, she’s mine."
Across campus, in dorm 3B, the lights were dimmed down to a warm glow.
Becky sat cross-legged on her bed, clad in an oversized red hoodie with her baby-pink painted toes peeking out from her sweatpants. Her hair was up in a messy bun, and her thick-rimmed glasses were slipping down her nose as she reviewed notes for her senior seminar.
Buzz.
Her phone screen illuminated the dark duvet. She picked it up casually, expecting a group chat notification.
Jason Vance sent you a friend request.
Becky’s breath caught in her throat. She nearly dropped the device straight onto her chest.
"No way," she whispered, her heart suddenly hammering against her ribs.
She immediately tapped his profile to verify it wasn't a fake account. As the page loaded, Becky found herself practically drooling over her screen. Jason was dangerously, effortlessly attractive. Sharp jawline, piercing eyes, dark hair slightly tousled, and a smile that looked like a lethal weapon in every single photo. He was built like a greek god in his golden-and-black team jersey, radiating an untouchable, magnetic pull.
Why on earth is Jason Vance sending me a request? she thought, biting her lip as she stared at a picture of him flexing on the sidelines. He doesn't even know I breathe the same campus air.
Skeptical, but thoroughly mesmerized, she tapped Accept.
Within three seconds, a message lit up her screen.
Jason: Took you long enough.
Becky snapped out of her trance, shaking her head to clear the fog. Her stubbornness kicked right back in.
Becky: Sorry, I had to double-check if this was a bot or just a severe case of misdirected confidence.
Across campus, parked in his black Jeep, Jason stared at his screen. He blinked, a genuine, quiet chuckle escaping him.
Jason: Ouch. Is that how you talk to the guy who just made your night?
Becky: You made my night? Bold assumption. I was actually mid-chapter analyzing Machiavelli’s political pragmatism before you interrupted.
Jason leaned back against his seat, resting his head against the headrest of his Jeep, his eyes lighting up. Finally, something interesting. He dropped the meathead persona and let his actual brain do the typing.
Jason: Pragmatism? Machiavelli’s argument in 'The Prince' is inherently flawed—it relies entirely on the assumption that fear is a more stable motivator than affection, ignoring the long-term volatility of an oppressed populace.
Becky froze. Her eyes went wide behind her glasses. She stared at the message, completely floored.
Wait... what? She reread it twice. The campus bad-boy quarterback actually knows Machiavelli? And has a coherent critique of renaissance political theory?!
Becky: ...Did you just pull that off Wikipedia, or did a helmet hit actually knock some literary comprehension into you?
Jason smiled in the dim interior of his Jeep, his thumb flying across the glass, thoroughly enjoying the fact that she was completely caught off guard.
Jason: Read the whole text in high school, Becky. Don't sound so surprised. Or did you think I only knew how to run fifty yards and look good doing it?
Becky bit down a smirk, her face flushing as she pulled her red hoodie tighter around herself.
Becky: I assumed the second part was all you had going for you, Vance. But don't get comfortable one good quote doesn't mean you can match my pace.
Jason: Is that a challenge, plain Jane? Because I always win.
Becky rolled her eyes, her face flushing hot as she pulled her red hoodie tighter around herself. Her thumb hesitated over the key, a dangerous pulse hammering in her veins.
Becky: Good luck with that, quarterback. You're playing on my field now.
Jason stared at the notification on his phone, his grip tightening around the steering wheel of his Jeep. A slow, dark smirk spread across his lips—the kind that didn't belong to the fake, golden-boy persona he wore for the cameras.
He didn't reply right away. Instead, he put the Jeep in drive, pulled out of the athletic center parking lot, and navigated the quiet campus roads until he idled right outside the brick façade of Residence Hall B.
Third floor. Corner window with the faint yellow string lights.
He killed the engine, tapped his screen, and sent a quick text.
Buzz.
Becky’s phone vibrated against her thigh. She glanced down, expecting another arrogant, witty jab.
Jason: Look out your window, Becky.
Her breath hitched. She unlocked her phone with trembling fingers, her mind racing.
Becky: What?
Jason: You said I was playing on your field. I just came to check out the venue. Nice red hoodie, by the way. It looks good on you.
Becky froze, her stomach doing a violent, dizzying flip. Slowly, cautiously, she slid out of bed and walked over to her window.
Down in the dimly lit courtyard, leaning lazily against the hood of a sleek black Jeep with his arms crossed over his chest, was Jason Vance. The warm glow of the streetlamp caught the sharp line of his jaw and his dark, messy hair. Even from three stories up, she could see the wicked, knowing tilt of his mouth.
He raised his phone to his ear, and a second later, Becky’s screen lit up with an incoming voice call.
She pressed it to her ear, her heart pounding like a drum against her ribs.
"Vance?" she whispered, her voice barely carrying across the glass.
Down below, Jason tilted his head back, looking directly up at her window. His voice came through the speaker low, dark, and impossibly smooth, vibrating right against her ear.
"I have a game this Friday," Jason purred, his eyes locked onto hers in the dark. "VIP seats on the 50-yard line. And after we win, you're coming with me as my date to the post-game party."
Becky let out a breathless, incredulous laugh. "And why on earth would I do that?"
"Because you want to see if my mind is as sharp in person as it is over text," Jason said softly, his deep voice sending shivers down her spine. "And deep down, plain Jane... you really want to see me play."
