Summary

On the night she is publicly rejected by her fated mate, the future Alpha, Raven Ashwood loses everything, her dignity, her home, and the future she believed was hers. Bound by an ancient treaty between the werewolf packs and the supernatural Mafia Syndicate, she is handed over to the one man every kingdom fears... Malachi Draven, the ruthless Mafia King, ruler of the The Obsidian Syndicate. Feared as the strongest warrior alive, Malachi hides a deadly secret. He is a powerful hybrid cursed to pass a monstrous legacy to any child born of supernatural blood. The only hope of ending the curse is to father an heir with a human woman. Their marriage begins as a political arrangement, nothing more. But behind the walls of his empire, Raven discovers that the man the world calls a monster may be the only one who has ever truly seen her. As old enemies rise, buried secrets come to light, and the Alpha who rejected her returns begging for a second chance, Raven must decide where she truly belongs. In a world ruled by blood, power, and betrayal, the greatest danger isn't falling for the Hybrid King. It's discovering that loving him could change the fate of every supernatural clan.

The Rejection

The first rays of dawn had yet to touch the sky when Raven Ashwood opened her eyes. She had been awake long before then. Sleep had come in restless fragments throughout the night, chased away each time she imagined standing beneath the sacred Moon Tree with hundreds of pack members watching. Every time she drifted off, she found herself dreaming of silver eyes, warm hands, and a voice calling her mate. Every time she woke, her heart beat a little faster.

Today was the Mate Ceremony. The most important night of every young wolf's life. Her fingers curled around the worn blanket beneath her chin as she stared at the wooden ceiling above her. Beyond the small bedroom window, the world was still cloaked in darkness. Somewhere outside, an owl called into the quiet before dawn, answered only by the distant rustle of wind through the pine forest surrounding the Silver Moon Pack.

She let out a slow breath, excitement fluttered inside her chest... So did fear. For twenty-two years, she had lived among wolves without ever truly becoming one of them. She knew every trail through the forest, every family name in the pack, every celebration and tradition. Yet there had always been an invisible line separating her from everyone else. Because she was human, and no amount of years could change that. Still... Today felt different.

The Moon Goddess chose mates regardless of rank or wealth, at least that was what the elders always preached. Maybe tonight she would finally find where she belonged. Raven pushed herself upright and tucked a loose strand of dark brown hair behind her ear before climbing from bed. The floorboards were icy beneath her feet as she crossed to the tiny mirror hanging beside the wardrobe. Silver-gray eyes stared back at her, eyes she'd been told were unusual since childhood. She brushed away the thought. Today wasn't the day to overthink everything. Today was supposed to be hopeful.

The comforting smell of fresh bread drifted through the Ashwood home as Raven descended the stairs. Vivian Ashwood was already seated at the dining table, dressed elegantly despite the early hour. Not a single strand of her perfectly styled chestnut hair was out of place. She looked up as Raven entered, her gaze immediately sweeping over the pale blue dress draped across Raven's arm.

Her lips pursed.

"You're wearing that?", she asked stiffly.

Raven hesitated. "I thought it was appropriate for the ceremony."

Vivian set down her teacup with a soft click. "It would be appropriate if you intended to blend into the background."

Raven lowered her eyes.

"I'll look for another one if—"

"No."

Vivian waved a dismissive hand, "It hardly matters what you wear."

The words were spoken calmly, almost lazily, yet they landed with precision. Raven folded the fabric tighter against herself.

"I only meant—"

Vivian rose gracefully from her chair and walked around Raven in a slow circle, inspecting her as though evaluating livestock.

"You've always been a pretty girl."

She reached out, smoothing an imaginary wrinkle from Raven's sleeve. "Pretty... for a human."

Raven forced herself to smile politely. "I've never tried to be anything else."

Vivian tilted her head.

"No? Then perhaps you should stop looking at Alpha Adrian as though fate owes you something."

Heat flooded Raven's cheeks. "I don't—"

Vivian smiled but her smiles never reached her eyes.

"You do. You know, I took you into this home after your parents died."

Raven's chest tightened. She had been barely five years old when a rogue attack claimed both her mother and father. She remembered almost nothing except warm hands, laughter, and blood staining the snow. The Silver Moon Pack had raised her afterward, and Vivian never missed an opportunity to remind her of that.

"I fed you, I clothed you, I gave you a family. The least you could do is remember your place."

Raven swallowed. "I do."

Vivian stepped closer. "Do you? Because Adrian Blackthorne is an Alpha. He deserves a Luna who can stand beside him in battle."

Her gaze drifted meaningfully over Raven's slender frame as she spoke the next words, "Not a human girl who belongs in an infirmary."

The words stung because they echoed every doubt Raven already carried.

Vivian patted her shoulder gently. "There is no shame in accepting what you are."

Then she walked away, leaving Raven standing alone in the kitchen.
