chapter 1: Eldoria kingdom

In the quiet of the morning, the Kingdom of Eldoria woke beneath a soft sky. The air carried the smell of freshly baked bread from the local bakeries and the lively chatter of merchants setting up their stalls. Near the great gate, farmers set out for their fields as the morning sun warmed the cobblestone streets.

Looking into the heart of the city, one could see two towering spires reaching toward the sky, and between them, a grand castle.

Eldoria was one of the three great kingdoms, renowned for its strength and the warriors it produced. With a population of several million, it was among the largest kingdoms in the realm. Its massive walls and towering gate stood as symbols of its power — a place where many of the greatest fighters were born.

Beside the gate, two guards stood in the morning calm, chatting quietly as the city slowly came to life.

One of them glanced toward the forest path. “Did you hear?”

“What?” the other asked.

“Another carriage was attacked yesterday, on the road. That’s four this month. They killed everyone and took everything.”

“Great. Another horror story to keep me up at night.”

The second guard glanced toward the forest again. Beyond the road, the trees stood motionless beneath the morning light, their branches swaying gently in the wind.

“They say whoever is attacking those carriages doesn’t leave anyone alive,” he said quietly.

“You’ve already told me that.”

“I’m just saying, something strange is happening out there. The forest has been getting more dangerous lately.”

The first guard sighed. “That’s why we’re here, isn’t it?”

Neither of them noticed the shadow moving along the distant road.

“Oh, by the way — I almost forgot. The higher-ups are sending a rookie to work with us. She starts today.”

“I swear, these academy brats are so annoying,” the first guard muttered, leaning against the gate. “They go off to some fancy school, learn a few flashy tricks, and think that makes them qualified to lecture us on how the world works. If this one thinks she’s walking in here to take charge, she’s got another thing coming. I’ll show her how things are really done.”

“Forget it,” the other guard said. “She’s got connections. People say she’s a sword prodigy — got a nickname and everything.”

The first guard opened his mouth to reply, but the words caught in his throat.

Standing beside him was a breathtaking young woman.

Her long, silky silver hair reached her waist, soft bangs framing a pair of icy blue eyes. The upper half was tied back with a black ribbon, the rest flowing loose behind her like liquid silver. She looked no older than eighteen, yet she carried herself with quiet, unshakable confidence.

This was the rookie everyone had been talking about.

The Silent Blade, Sophia.

The guardhouse door opened, and a large, muscular man stepped out — bald, dressed in a captain’s armor. He looked at the young woman and smiled.

“Sophia. You’ve arrived.”

She straightened. “Silent Blade Sophia, reporting for duty! I’ll be working with you starting today. Looking forward to it.”

“Well, look at that. Good spirit already.” The captain turned to the guards. “This is Sophia. Treat her well — she’ll be with us from now on.” Then, back to her: “I’ll walk you through your responsibilities and what we do out here.”

Deep down, though, he was thinking something else entirely. This little princess thinks she’s better than us. I’ll teach her a lesson, show her who’s really in charge here.

“Listen carefully, Sophia,” the captain said, his expression turning serious. “Our job is simple. First — keep an eye out for suspicious travelers, and deal with any trouble the moment it starts. Second — stay alert for mutated monsters coming out of the forest. If one shows up, we take it down without delay.”

“Suspicious people?” Sophia asked.

The captain smiled and pointed toward the open ground outside the gate. “Take a look over there.”

The four of them turned. In the middle of the open space stood a figure in a dark hood, completely still, their whole body hidden beneath the cloak.

The captain chuckled. “Speak of the devil.” He glanced at Sophia. “Watch and learn.”

The hooded figure hadn’t moved. Their gaze swept slowly across the kingdom’s towering spires and the distant castle, filled with something like childlike wonder. In a language none of them recognized, they murmured, “This is amazing.”

The captain and the two guards crossed the distance in an instant. The captain tapped the figure’s shoulder. “Hold it right there, kid.”

The figure turned.

The moment their eyes met, a chill ran straight down the captain’s spine. Beneath the hood was a pair of dark brown eyes, bottomless as an abyss, radiating a killing intent that didn’t belong on a child.

He didn’t hesitate. He struck with tremendous force, sending the hooded figure crashing through the air and straight into a wooden shop.

The building shattered on impact, debris and dust flying in every direction. People near the gate screamed and scattered, and the street dissolved into chaos.

The captain stared at the wreckage. “...Was that too much?”

As the dust settled, the hooded figure was still standing. They looked around, dazed, confusion flickering across their face — and then, for just a moment, something like lightning flashed in their eyes.

They vanished.

Before the captain could react, the figure was beside him, driving a kick into his ribs that sent him crashing through another house. Before the two guards could even raise their weapons, the figure struck one across the neck, dropping him instantly, and slammed a fist into the other hard enough to send him flying.

That was when the figure sensed something — Sophia’s blade, already cutting through the air toward them.

They sidestepped it without effort, meeting her eyes with a flash of excitement and the faintest smile.

Sophia let out a slow sigh, looking around at the unconscious guards and captain. “I didn’t learn anything from this.”

The figure glanced at her, then walked over and picked up a fallen guard’s sword. A moment later, they were closing the distance at astonishing speed.

Sophia raised her blade to meet them, and steel met steel in a sharp, ringing clash. They traded blows again and again, each move answered, each read a heartbeat ahead — two fighters testing each other’s limits in real time.

Sophia’s eyes narrowed as their swords collided again.

The stranger wasn’t simply fast. He seemed to understand her movements before she made them. Every time she changed her stance, he adjusted immediately.

Who is this person? she wondered.

She swung from the side, but the figure ducked beneath the blade and stepped forward. Sophia quickly twisted her sword and blocked another strike.

Their blades separated.

For the first time, Sophia smiled faintly.

“You’re interesting.”

The figure tilted their head, almost as if they didn’t understand her words.

Then they rushed forward again.

Sophia stepped back, putting distance between them. The air around her sword seemed to shift, to gather.

Sensing it, the figure took a few cautious steps back, eyes locked on the blade.

Before either of them could move again, a strange vibration passed through the ground.

Sophia’s expression changed.

“Wait.”

The figure stopped as well.

Around them, several people stumbled as the street began to shake. Dust fell from nearby buildings, and frightened civilians started running toward the city gates.

The captain, still lying among the wreckage, slowly opened his eyes.

“What... is happening?”

A deep sound echoed beneath their feet.

Crack.

A thin line appeared in the stone road.

Then another.

The cracks spread rapidly across the ground.

They both looked down as the earth split open. A monster the size of a house climbed out from beneath it, its body forged from rock and metal.

Sophia recognized it at once. One of the higher-ups’ constructs.

The hooded figure’s eyes locked onto the giant. In a single motion, they leapt onto its body and, with one swing, severed one of its massive stone arms. It hit the ground with a crash that shook the street.

The figure looked down at the giant and murmured something in that same unfamiliar language. “It has only size.”

Then they turned back to Sophia, yawned, and rubbed the back of their neck — already bored, it seemed, of the fight.

Sophia knew these metal giants were slow on their own. Their real danger was in numbers.

As if to prove the thought right, the ground trembled again. Two more giants tore free of the earth. Moments later, ten or twelve more guards came rushing toward the scene.

The hooded figure looked at the giants, then at the guards closing in, shook their head, and bolted toward the city. The guards took off after them.

Sophia sheathed her sword and walked back to check on the captain and the others, still unconscious on the ground.

Inside the castle, an old man with white hair stood by a large window, watching the city below in silence.

A knock came at the door.

“Come in,” he said.

A man entered and bowed. “Your Majesty. There’s been a disturbance at the north gate.”

The old man kept stroking his beard, eyes still on the city.

“Oh,” he said. “Is that so.”
