Chapter One

Kas flicked her gaze toward the flight line for the hundredth time, popping another multicoloured bubble on her phone screen with a soft tap.

Beside her, Jaen’s perfectly manicured nails drummed a crisp, impatient rhythm against her dark brown folio.

Thank God for the indoor arrivals area.Ganim’s relentless sunshine made waiting on the tarmac a fast track to heat exhaustion, but inside, the air conditioning kept the humidity at bay.

“They’ll be here soon,” Jaen said, not looking up.

“Go through your documents and make sure you have everything.

Kas didn’t break her streak on the phone.

“I checked the forms yesterday and again when we got here this morning. If I’m missing something at this point, I’ll adapt.”

Jaen scoffed, superciliously flicking a bronde lock of hair behind her shoulder.

“This is no time to ‘adapt.’ Everything needs to be airtight from the start. You’re being entirely too lackadaisical. As always.”

Behind her sunglasses, Kas rolled her eyes, keeping the rest of her face completely smooth.

Jaen was coiffed to perfection, polished to a shine, and entirely devoted to the company’s bottom line.

Kas had respect for her.

Professionally, at least..

“I’m sure you’ll give Brien a full report the moment i slip up, so you’re covered either way, right?” Kas murmured.

“Of course you’d reduce enforcing reasonable standards to snitching,” Jaen sneered, throwing her a cold glance.

“You’ve been like this since our school days. Grow up.”

“Well, if the C-suite wants to do business with wolf demons, I have to find my entertainment somewhere.”

Jaen snapped her head around, scanning the terminal before leaning in, her voice dropping to a harsh whisper.

“Kasanda Greene, if you say one word to the Serranos about those old wives tales, I will file the complaint with HR myself. If they take offense, this entire deal collapses.”

Kas tilted her head, maintaining her best poker face. The remark had been a joke but Jaen was too tightly wound to notice.

Before Jaen could lay into her any further, the low roar of a landing cargo plane rattled the glass wall.

Kas squinted against the glare, tracking the tail number as the aircraft coasted along the runway.

She pulled a folded slip of paper from her breast pocket, cross-referenced the digits and tucked it back into place.

“That’s them,” Kas said, locking her phone and standing up.

“Tits up, Jaen, it’s go time.”

Jaen pinched the bridge of her nose with an exasperated sigh.
