Chapter One; The Accident

Tuesday, December 17th

There was a knock at the door. First fairly loud, then like someone was banging on it. “Mummy?” called a little girl. No reply. “Mum?” she tried again. A baby started to cry. “Sweetheart, can you get the door?” asked a lady from the other side. The little girl opened the door. A blonde woman, who looked about in her early twenties, walked in. She was wearing some kind of formal outfit, the girl could tell. She bent down to her level. “Baby? How old are you?” the lady asked. “Five,” she replied. “Oh? What’s your name?” she asked. “Jane,” the little girl said. “Do you like my dress?” she asked the lady. “Yes, it’s lovely, dear. Tell me, is anyone else home?” she asked. The girl nodded. “Follow?” she asked. “Mhm,” the lady replied. The girl led her into a mostly open room with a cradle. “Who’s this?” – “Catherine,” Jane told her. “I see,” she said. The lady picked the baby up. “Follow me,” she told her. Jane followed. Flashing lights from the vehicles outside lit everything up.

The lady put the two in a car. They had no idea what was going on or where their mum was. They were never told. Instead, they were put into emergency care.
