Summary

Raya Collins has one goal: win the student-body presidency, keep her scholarship, and secure her future. At Bell Grave Academy, Raya has worked hard to earn everything she has. With her dreams of Yale depending on her scholarship, she can't afford distractions—especially not Malik Carter. Malik is confident, competitive, popular, and the one person who knows exactly how to get under Raya's skin. When he decides to run for student-body president to protect the football program he loves, Raya suddenly finds herself competing against her biggest enemy. Now, the two are fighting for the same position, and neither is willing to lose. Their campaign quickly becomes a battle of insults, pranks, competition, and trying to outdo each other at every turn. But somewhere between the arguments and the rivalry, something unexpected begins to grow. The more they fight, the more they understand each other. The more they try to stay apart, the harder it becomes. And when their rivalry starts turning into something neither of them can ignore, Raya has to wonder if falling for Malik is worth risking everything she's worked for. Because sometimes, the person standing on the opposite side of the campaign stage might be the person standing closest to your heart.

Chapter 1

Ignoring the noisy hallways, I walked down the hallways with my head held up high, who you would think that a snobby private school like mine and my school wasn’t just any snobby private it was “THE SNOBBY PRIVATE SCHOOL”, yes I go to Belgrave Academy the most prestigious school in the state, yes the same school that has such noisy hallways I think another one of the rich kids got into a fight believe it or not it happens more often than you think. I was cut off from my thoughts when my bestie Amber grabbed my hand

“Lost in your thoughts again, Raya” she chirped.

Nearly jumping me out of my skin, the books I had in my hand fell clumsily onto the floor with a loud bang.

Looking at my overly chirpy best friend, how can someone be so happy so early in the morning.

“You didn’t have to scare me you know”, I lazily rolled my eyes at her

“Well, what’s the fun in that”, well that earned her another eye roll.

“Raya, I heard Malik and Trey are fighting let’s go see” she said so enthusiastically like watching two dudes beat the shit out of themselves is fun, well she does watch WWE.

I know I really shouldn’t go but curiosity got the best of me I want to know why golden boy Malik is in a fight,

“okay fine but we won’t stay long got it”

“Yass” she says as she practically drags me to the part of the hallway where the fight was happening.

As soon as I got there, I regretted my decision immediately most fights in Belgrave Academy aren’t that intense it’s mostly scrawny kids flinging their arms at each other but that wasn’t the case at all, Trey’s nose was bleeding heavily and he seemed to have a swollen eye unlike Malik that just had a few scratches, damn does Trey have claws, well that’s what I thought until I saw the razor in his hand, this got really bad when Trey was about to do something really stupid then Principal Rogers came in.

“Break it up, both of you NOW!”, she yelled the halls went silent fast.

Trey froze holding the razor midair, Malik just stood there unfazed, he was just caught he could at least show some emotion.

“You two in my office NOW!”, she yelled again I could literally see a vein popping up in her forehead she was really angry.

The crowd forming around them made some space for both of them to go to her office, me and amber shuffled into the crowd but I wasn’t fast enough Malik bumped into me.

“Watch where you’re going” he yelled.

I was in shock the bumping and the yelling was uncalled for Amber tried to drag me out of their but I made sure to yell.

“Next time use your eyes you blind bat!”, he snapped his head to my direction about to yell something but Mrs. Rogers cut him off.

“Mr. Carter, I said now” he turned away in a huff but he made sure to give me a death glare.

Okay I won’t lie and say I wasn’t scared my mouth got me into trouble again and with Malik Carter, the Golden boy of Belgrave most of what 5 students parents make in a year added up doesn’t compare to what the Carter’s earn in a month they are like beyond rich, it doesn’t hurt that their only son is the top of his class and the captain of the football team, what the perfect life and I’m not stalking him or anything like that people gossip I just have good ears anyway While am a scholarship student whose parents own a laundry mat you could see the huge difference a mile away but I couldn’t let him talk to me like that.

Amber used her hand and slapped her face.

“Raya, I can’t believe you did that”, she said still face-palming herself

“I couldn’t let him talk to me like that I’m pretty sure he didn’t notice”, I said to amber in a nonchalant way like I didn’t care, but I definitely cared and oh he definitely noticed the only people who didn’t notice was the other kids they were too busy checking their phones to see if they got good videos of the fight.

I grabbed her hand and rushed her to our class that we had cause the bell would soon ring.

“OK, OK I’m coming” she said as she was trying to catch up with me.

Finally, school was over for today, Amber does cheer so she had to stay back, on my way out of as I left the building. I saw Malik hanging out with his football buddies like nothing happened like he didn’t trying to kill someone this morning, at that moment I remembered our little fiasco in the hallway I tried my best to go off unnoticed when I was about to reach the road then I heard someone shout.

“Yo blind bat”

I tried my best to ignore it trying to scurry away then I heard footsteps then a hand touched my shoulder spinning me to him, meeting his face, yes, the face of Malik Carter.

With his hand still on my shoulder he looked at me with a straight face unfazed unlike me looking confused and getting a bit agitated he literally called me a bat a blind one. I got a little distracted by the guy towering over me because he wasn’t just any random looking guy he had caramel skin with a sharp jaw line and light brown eyes that looked so captivating his whole face was so shaped and defined and he had his Belgrave custom sweater on that hugged his body making it known that he was ripped but I made sure to keep my face straight and cautioned my mind from going to bad places.

“I was calling you are you deaf or something”

“Excuse you my name isn’t blind bat what do you want and the blind bat here is you, I called you that”

“Oh, I know but it fits you more because you can’t watch where you’re going”

“Wha- “I was cut off by him then he said

“Look I’m not here to make conversation I just want to make sure what happened in the hallway doesn’t happen again next time know who you’re talking to before you open that big mouth of yours” he huffed, and this time I couldn’t get a word in he just turned his back to me and walked away I could hear the snickering of his football buddies behind us, and in that moment I felt embarrassed and vulnerable like a dumb show just meant for their entertainment and I knew that very moment that I Raya Collins hated Malik Carter.
