Chapter One The kind of quiet that stays

Ifunanya was not the kind of girl people noticed twice.

Not because she was invisible—no.

But because she had mastered the art of being just enough to pass through spaces without leaving echoes behind.

She laughed when laughter was expected.

She answered when spoken to.

She existed in a way that made things easier for everyone else.

But inside her… things were not easy.

There was a quiet she carried—

not the peaceful kind, not the soft kind that comes with rest—

but the kind that lingers after something has been felt too deeply and left with nowhere to go.

It lived in her chest.

In the pauses between her words.

In the way she sometimes stared a little too long at nothing.

No one asked about it.

And even if they did…

she wouldn’t have known how to explain it.

Because how do you describe a feeling that doesn’t shout?

A heaviness that doesn’t break you… but also doesn’t leave?

So she kept it.

Folded neatly behind smiles.

Hidden carefully between ordinary days.

Recently, something had ended.

Something big enough that everyone around her called it “a new beginning.”

They celebrated it.

Clapped for her.

Spoke about the future like it was something bright and certain.

She nodded.

She smiled.

But it didn’t feel like a beginning.

It felt like standing in the middle of a road

with no clear direction—

just movement expected of her.

And so she moved.

Not because she knew where she was going,

but because staying still felt like failing.

Sometimes, late at night,

when the world softened enough to feel honest…

She imagined another place.

Not loudly.

Not like a dream she told people about.

Just… quietly.

A place where the air didn’t weigh so much.

Where silence didn’t feel empty.

Where she didn’t have to be “just enough.”

A forest, maybe.

Not wild in a frightening way—

but alive in a gentle way.

Trees that didn’t judge.

Wind that didn’t ask questions.

A sky that didn’t expect answers.

And in that place…

she wasn’t trying.

She was just there.

And somehow…

That was enough.

She never told anyone about it.

Because some things feel too fragile to share.

Like if you say them out loud,

they might disappear.

So she kept that world to herself.

Just like she kept everything else.

But what Ifunanya didn’t know—

what she couldn’t have known—

was that some quiet things do not stay hidden forever.

Some worlds…

no matter how softly imagined—

have a way of finding their way back.

carolin: A great story every chapter filled with so much emotion and determination. Inner strength is not an easy battle nor is it easy to overcome years of persecution. This is a story of self reflection and finding courage to overcome the doubt within. I look forward to the sequel
