Summary

Highway Shadows: Book Six - The Road That Watches By Craig Smith The road is no longer haunted. It's alive. And it's watching. Craig returns to the highway - but this time, every step is recorded, every breath transcribed. Hooded figures peer from overpasses. Glowing red eyes blink from the sky. The dog that once guided him now stands silent, transformed into a trail of judgment. A book floats beside him, writing itself in real time. Every hesitation becomes a sentence. Every doubt becomes a chapter. And somewhere, someone is reading - not to understand, but to decide if Craig deserves to be remembered. As the watchers close in, Craig must confront the truth: he's no longer walking the road. He is the road.t And the world is rewriting itself in his image

CHAPTER ONE - The Road That Watches Back

CHAPTER ONE - The Road That Watches Back

🌑 The Return to the Highway

Craig steps onto the highway just before dawn.

The sky is black.

The road is black.

Even the air feels darker than it should.

But the lines on the asphalt glow faint red - like veins.

Craig: "You've changed."

The road pulses once beneath his boots.

Not a crack.

Not a tremor.

A heartbeat.

---

👁️ The First Sign

A road sign flickers ahead.

It shouldn't be on - there's no power out here.

The letters glitch, rearranging themselves:

YOU ARE NOT ALONE

Craig stops.

The wind stops with him.

Then the sign changes again:

WE SEE YOU

Craig grips the pen in his pocket.

Not a weapon this time.

A warning.

---

🐺 The Wolf in the Ditch

A low growl echoes from the right.

Craig turns.

A wolf stands in the ditch - black fur, red eyes, breath steaming like smoke.

But it doesn't attack.

It watches.

Its eyes blink once... twice... then a third time, unnaturally slow.

Craig: "You're not real."

The wolf tilts its head.

Then its eyes shift - not animal eyes anymore.

Human.

Watching.

Recording.

Craig steps back.

The wolf vanishes into the dark without a sound.

---

📖 The Book That Writes Itself

Craig reaches the center of the highway.

A book lies on the asphalt.

Black cover.

Red spine.

No title.

He kneels and touches it.

The pages flip on their own.

Words appear:

Craig steps onto the highway.

Craig sees the watchers.

Craig hesitates.

Craig: "You're writing me."

The book writes again:

WE WRITE WHAT YOU DO

Craig slams it shut.

But the letters burn through the cover:

AND WE ARE NEVER WRONG

---

🛣️ The Road Awakens

The asphalt ripples.

Not like water.

Like something underneath is breathing.

Craig backs away.

The red lines on the road brighten - glowing like fresh embers.

Then the road writes a message across itself:

WELCOME BACK, AUTHOR

Craig: "I didn't write this."

The road pulses again.

WE DID

---

🌌 End of Chapter One

Craig stands alone on a living highway.

The watchers are awake.

The book is writing.

The wolf is waiting.

And the road - for the first time - is telling its own story.

Let Craig know what you thought about this chapter!
