Chapter 1 — The Day the World Changed
—
At 11:47 a.m., the world was normal.
At 11:48, it stopped being normal.
No warning came from the sky.
No voice spoke from the heavens.
No scientist announced the end of the world.
There was only a sound.
A low, almost inaudible vibration.
At first, nobody noticed it.
People continued walking through crowded streets. Cars moved through intersections. Children played in schoolyards. Office workers complained about deadlines. Soldiers stood at their posts. Airplanes crossed the sky.
In a small city, a young man named Evan Cole was carrying two boxes out of a warehouse when he stopped.
The vibration had reached him.
He looked around.
"Did you hear that?"
His coworker frowned.
"Hear what?"
Evan opened his mouth.
Then the sky turned white.
Not bright.
Not like sunlight.
White.
For one impossible second, the entire world disappeared beneath a colorless flash.
And then—
BOOOOOOM.
The ground moved.
Windows shattered.
Cars crashed into each other.
People screamed.
Across the planet, something had awakened.
In New York, every electronic billboard suddenly went black.
Then every screen displayed the same thing.
Nothing.
Just static.
A woman standing in Times Square looked upward.
The clouds were moving.
Not with the wind.
They were spiraling.
A massive circular formation appeared above the city.
"What the hell is that?"
People pulled out their phones.
Thousands of cameras pointed toward the sky.
Then lightning began appearing inside the clouds.
But it wasn't normal lightning.
It was blue.
Red.
Gold.
Purple.
Black.
Lightning of colors nobody had ever seen before.
A child pointed.
"Mom..."
His mother grabbed his hand.
"Come on."
The crowd began running.
Nobody knew why.
They simply felt that something was wrong.
In Beijing, military command centers went into emergency lockdown.
"Report!"
"We've lost communication with three satellites!"
"Which satellites?"
"All three weather-monitoring satellites."
"Natural disaster?"
"We don't know."
A second officer rushed into the command room.
"Sir!"
"What?"
"You need to see this."
The room went silent as the main screen displayed satellite footage.
The entire atmosphere appeared distorted.
Something enormous was spreading across the planet.
"Is that an electromagnetic disturbance?"
"Possibly."
"Possibly?"
The general stared at the screen.
"Give me a probability."
The scientist swallowed.
"We don't have enough data."
"Then get enough data."
"We're trying."
The lights flickered.
Every screen went black.
Then one came back on.
A strange pattern appeared.
It looked almost like a human fingerprint.
The scientist stared at it.
"That's impossible."
"What?"
"That pattern..."
He stepped closer.
"It isn't coming from outside Earth."
The general looked at him.
"Then where is it coming from?"
The scientist's face went pale.
"Everywhere."
In Moscow, alarms began screaming.
In London, emergency broadcasts interrupted television programs.
In Tokyo, trains stopped.
In Paris, aircraft controllers lost contact with several planes.
In Washington, military officials were moved into underground command facilities.
In Lagos, people poured into the streets after several buildings shook violently.
In São Paulo, hundreds of people saw glowing particles falling from the sky.
In Cairo, the desert wind suddenly stopped.
In Sydney, the ocean pulled away from the shore for several hundred meters before crashing back.
Nobody understood.
But governments understood one thing.
Something had happened to the planet.
And they were afraid.
At 11:52 a.m., the first human died.
Nobody knew his name.
He was a taxi driver.
He had been driving through an intersection when his hands suddenly began glowing.
He screamed.
The vehicle crashed into a wall.
His passengers escaped.
The driver didn't.
His body convulsed violently.
Then—
CRACK.
Something burst from his chest.
People ran.
Police arrived.
One officer approached cautiously.
"Sir?"
The driver's body moved.
His eyes opened.
They were completely black.
The officer raised his weapon.
"Stay where you are!"
The man screamed.
The sound wasn't human.
The officer fired.
The first bullet hit him.
He didn't fall.
The second bullet hit him.
He still didn't fall.
The officer's hands began shaking.
"What the..."
The man's body suddenly expanded.
Bone pushed through skin.
His arms twisted.
His jaw stretched.
Within seconds, the taxi driver was no longer human.
The officer screamed into his radio.
"Dispatch! We need—"
The creature lunged.
At the same moment, something completely different happened hundreds of kilometers away.
A little girl fell from a second-floor balcony.
Her father screamed.
"NO!"
She should have died.
Instead, the air beneath her changed.
She stopped.
Not slowed.
Stopped.
She remained suspended several meters above the ground.
Her father stared.
The little girl looked down.
"Daddy?"
He couldn't answer.
She slowly floated back toward him.
In another country, a teenager accidentally produced fire from his hands.
A woman froze an entire room.
A man disappeared and reappeared on the other side of a street.
A fisherman touched the ocean and watched the water rise toward his hand.
A wounded soldier discovered that his bleeding had stopped.
A dog suddenly understood human speech.
A bird flew faster than a fighter jet.
A woman screamed and every light in the building exploded.
A man touched a wall and saw through it.
A boy whispered a word—
and everyone within twenty meters forgot what they had been doing.
Some abilities were beautiful.
Some were terrifying.
Some were useless.
Some were deadly.
And some...
were already beyond human understanding.
At 12:03 p.m., the governments of the world officially entered emergency status.
At 12:05, the first international emergency conference began.
At 12:07, three nations closed their borders.
At 12:10, several militaries mobilized.
At 12:14, the first major city declared martial law.
At 12:21, the internet collapsed in several regions because billions of people were trying to upload the same thing.
Videos.
Fire.
Lightning.
Monsters.
Floating people.
Invisible people.
People disappearing.
People dying.
People awakening.
Nobody knew what to call them.
Superhumans.
Mutants.
Monsters.
Angels.
Demons.
Weapons.
Gods.
The names changed every minute.
And in the middle of all that chaos...
A young man was sitting in a small apartment eating instant noodles.
His name was Ethan Vale.
Twenty-one years old.
Ordinary.
No special family.
No famous parents.
No military training.
No genius-level intelligence.
No mysterious destiny.
He had spent the morning working a job he hated.
Now he was watching the news.
The reporter on television was visibly struggling to remain calm.
"We are receiving reports from several cities that individuals have developed what appear to be extraordinary abilities. Authorities are urging citizens not to approach anyone displaying unusual physical or neurological—"
The television suddenly cut to static.
Ethan sighed.
"Of course."
His phone vibrated.
Then again.
Then again.
Messages flooded in.
BRO ARE YOU SEEING THIS?
MY COUSIN CAN LIGHT HIS HANDS ON FIRE
PEOPLE ARE FIGHTING IN THE STREET
THE GOVERNMENT SAID EVERYONE SHOULD STAY INSIDE
Ethan stared at the messages.
He slowly put down his chopsticks.
Then the apartment shook.
BOOM.
His bowl fell to the floor.
Ethan stood.
"What was that?"
Another explosion sounded outside.
He walked toward the window.
People were running down the street.
A car had overturned.
Smoke filled the road.
Someone was screaming.
Ethan grabbed his jacket.
His instincts told him to stay inside.
But another explosion sounded.
Closer.
He ran downstairs.
Outside, chaos had already consumed the neighborhood.
A man stood in the middle of the road.
Fire covered both of his arms.
People kept their distance.
"You!"
A police officer aimed his weapon.
"Get on the ground!"
The man looked at his hands.
"I... I don't know what's happening."
Flames suddenly exploded from his body.
The officer fired.
Ethan froze.
The bullets struck the man's shoulder.
The man screamed.
Then the fire around him became enormous.
A nearby vehicle exploded.
Everyone scattered.
Ethan ran.
He didn't know where he was going.
He simply ran.
Behind him, someone screamed.
Then another voice.
"HELP!"
Ethan stopped.
He looked back.
A little boy was trapped beneath a fallen piece of metal.
His mother was trying desperately to pull it away.
Ethan hesitated.
He could hear the fire.
He could hear people screaming.
He could smell smoke.
Every sensible part of his brain told him to keep running.
Then he turned around.
"Move!"
He rushed toward them.
The woman looked at him.
"Please!"
Ethan grabbed the metal.
It didn't move.
He tried again.
Nothing.
"Come on..."
He strained until his arms shook.
Nothing.
Then—
Something inside him changed.
Not power.
Not strength.
Something else.
A sensation.
Like a second heartbeat.
Thump.
Ethan's eyes widened.
Thump.
The world suddenly became silent.
The fire stopped moving.
The screaming disappeared.
For one brief moment, Ethan saw something.
Not with his eyes.
With something deeper.
A vast ocean of light.
Countless possibilities.
Millions of paths.
Abilities.
Lives.
Evolution.
Creation.
Destruction.
And somewhere inside that endless ocean...
something noticed him.
Then it vanished.
Time returned.
The fire moved.
The screaming resumed.
Ethan stumbled backward.
"What... was that?"
The metal suddenly moved.
Not because he was stronger.
Someone else had arrived.
A young woman grabbed the metal with both hands.
Her eyes were glowing faintly.
"Get the kid out!"
Ethan didn't question it.
He grabbed the boy and pulled him free.
The woman threw the metal aside.
The child cried against his mother.
Ethan stared at the woman.
"What are you?"
She looked at her hands.
"I don't know."
A massive explosion interrupted them.
They looked toward the horizon.
A column of light rose into the sky.
Then another.
Then another.
Across the city.
Across the country.
Across the world.
The Age of Awakening had begun.
Thousands of kilometers away, inside an underground military command center, a general watched the incoming reports.
"How many confirmed awakened?"
The officer beside him hesitated.
"We don't know."
"Estimate."
"At least several thousand."
The general stared.
"Several thousand?"
"Yes."
"How many hostile?"
"We don't know."
"How many can be controlled?"
The officer said nothing.
The general understood.
Nobody knew.
Another officer entered.
"Sir."
"What now?"
"We have identified several individuals whose abilities appear significantly stronger than the others."
"How strong?"
The officer placed photographs on the table.
One showed a man surrounded by lightning.
Another showed a woman standing inside an enormous frozen structure.
Another showed a person disappearing into darkness.
Another showed a man standing in the middle of a burning street.
The general stared at the photographs.
"Are these military?"
"No."
"Police?"
"No."
"Then what are they?"
The officer looked at him.
"That's the problem."
That night, every major government on Earth asked the same question.
Who controls the awakened?
The answer came quickly.
Nobody.
Not yet.
Because among the millions of ordinary people terrified by the Awakening...
there were individuals who had awakened powers capable of challenging armies.
And somewhere among them was a young man who didn't even know what his own ability was.
He would eventually travel across cities.
He would build a team.
He would meet the girl whose mind contained a laboratory.
He would turn a moving container into a home.
He would raise two animals that should never have become what they became.
He would learn to fight.
He would carry guns.
He would learn the sword.
He would lose people.
He would fall in love.
He would make enemies.
He would discover other bloodlines.
He would encounter kings, monsters, scientists, soldiers, angels and things that were never human.
But on this day...
he was still just Ethan Vale.
And he had no idea that something inside him had already awakened.
Somewhere in the darkness of an abandoned building, a man opened his eyes.
A black mark appeared across his palm.
He smiled.
"So..."
Darkness gathered around him.
"...the world finally changed."
Far away, another person opened their eyes.
Their shadow moved independently.
They looked down.
The shadow looked back.
And smiled.
Neither knew about the other.
Not yet.
But one day...
their two bloodlines would collide.
And when they did, an entire city would become their battlefield.
The Age of Awakening had begun.
And humanity had no idea what it had awakened.
