The Truth That Began with Death
Sometimes, the reason you let someone into your life isn’t because you love them. Sometimes, the only reason is because you need them.
Chapter 1 — The Island
Lina Vescari stood by the window.
The sea was calm again.
The same view every day. The same sea. The same walls. The same door. And the same man. Her father.
She was seventeen years old.
She had never known what it was like to sit in a school classroom. Her father brought private tutors to the island to educate her. She attended her lessons at home, read her books there, and even took her exams within the walls of the house.
But none of what she learned taught her anything about the outside world.
She had never had friends. She had never seen a city.
She had never sat alone in a café.
She had never even ridden a bus.
Because she wasn’t allowed to leave this house.
Lina glanced at the security guard standing beside the door. As always, he was armed.
She closed the curtains.
Then she pulled a small bag from underneath her bed.
Inside were three bottles of water, a few things to eat, and the money she had been secretly saving for years.
She was leaving tonight.
She wouldn’t wait any longer.
A little after midnight, the house finally fell silent.
Lina slowly opened her bedroom door.
She stepped into the hallway, moving as quietly as she could.
When she reached the stairs, she heard a voice coming from downstairs.
She froze.
Her father.
Adrian was on the phone.
“No.”
Lina couldn’t hear the voice on the other end.
“You are not bringing her here.”
Lina held her breath.
“Because my daughter is my problem. I won’t let anyone near her.”
Lina frowned.
She knew a lot about her father.
But for the first time, she heard something in his voice that sounded almost like fear.
Adrian ended the call.
At that exact moment, he looked up.
His eyes met Lina’s.
Neither of them spoke for several seconds.
Adrian’s gaze dropped to the bag in Lina’s hand.
Then he looked back at his daughter.
“You want to leave.”
Lina said nothing.
“You want to find your mother.”
Lina’s eyes filled with tears.
“Where is my mother?”
Adrian fell silent.
For the first time, Lina raised her voice.
“WHERE IS MY MOTHER?”
Adrian didn’t answer.
He simply turned away.
“Go back to your room.”
“No.”
“Lina.”
“I’M NOT A CHILD ANYMORE!”
Adrian stared at her for a few seconds.
Then he said only one thing:
“When I’m dead, you’ll learn everything.”
Lina’s face went pale.
“What does that mean?”
Adrian didn’t answer.
He simply walked into his room.
One Week Later
03:12 AM
A violent storm raged across the island.
Alarms echoed throughout the house.
Lina tried to open her door.
It wouldn’t budge.
“Dad?”
No answer.
“DAD!”
Silence.
Lina pounded on the door again and again.
Then she saw a man running down the hallway.
“Mr. Vescari...” The man was out of breath.
Lina shouted through the door.
“Where is my father?”
The man didn’t answer.
Lina’s heart began to race.
“WHERE IS MY FATHER?”
The man finally stopped.
He lowered his head.
“Your father is dead.”
At that moment, Lina’s world fell silent.
Adrian Vescari was dead.
A man who had been wanted across the world for years...
He had died without ever being caught.
Without ever standing trial.
Without ever revealing his secrets.
But he had left only one thing behind for his daughter:
A letter.
There were only a few words written on it:
“If you want to find your mother, find Ethan Cole.”
Lina stared at the letter for a long time.
And for the first time, she realized that her father’s death wasn’t the end.
Her real story was only beginning.
“Some truths don’t die, even when the people who hide them do.”
