Chapter 1
Lacy looks up at the night sky. It’s only the start of winter. Yet, the center city of the faerie kingdom is getting busy with their works to decorate every corner of the city already. The twinker stars are glittering prettily. Casendra lands in front of her.
“Are they going to give us any break?” Casendra seems quite annoyed. “I’ve been setting these goddamn lights for the last 4 hours. At this rate, my wings will fall off.”
“It’s the 1000 years anniversary of the kingdom of faeries. No wonder, they’re going all out.”
“Whatever. What does that have to do with us, students”
“You tell me. You’re the one who signed up to be volenteer if i remember correctly.”
Casendra sighs. “I guess i did. But the extra credits aren’t worth it, i must admit. Do you have anywhere to go? Wanna fly to the lake?”
Lacy’s eyes fill with clouds. But she doesn’t let Casendra notice.
“Can’t. My wings are tired.” She laughs nervously.
But Casendra seem to notice something is wrong with her friend. “We can walk.”
“It’s fine. I know you’re tired too. I’ll just go home for now.”
“Take care.” Casendra gives her a quick hug and flies away.
A flight that wouldve taken her a few minutes to reach home, takes away half and hour and her angered breath and a bit of her sanity. Finally, she sees the familiar lanterns. Decorated with silver ribbons and flowy veins of leaves.
Lacy doesn’t enter the house. Instead she goes to the backyards. This part of the forest is what calms her down the most. She flaps her wings. And the wings protest. Stupid wings. Work! She flaps her wings harder. This time they do co operate. She flies up and lands in the branch of the tallest tree she could find. Up there, she looks at the view. The whole forest is glittering with twinkle stars and fireflies. Her eyes lock with a bonsai in the distance.
“I can do this.” She takes a deep breath, and flaps her wings, and before she could exhale, she’s flying again. And she feels it all. The freedom, the joy, the night breeze. She goes up higher and higher into the sky. She dances around with the wind and the dorminors (a tiny white creature with a birdlike body but 6 wings, usually seen during night time) and then it snaps again. One moment she feels the most intense pain in the wings, that spreads all across her body, and the next moment her wings give up and she’s falling down.
“I flew to my death. That’s poetry in itself.” Was the second last thing she thought before it all went black. The last thing she thought was “fuck”
