Prologue

The Veilbreed are an almost mythical anomaly—a transformation so extremely rare that most immortals consider them nothing more than a ghost story. They are created only when an immortal, vampire or werewolf, is bitten by the opposing species. Such a curse usually ends in an agonizing death, but a rare few possess the unique compatibility to merge both bloodlines, becoming a Veilbreed.

As the werewolf sank its sharp teeth into my shoulder, everything went black. I heard a high-pitched, agonizing scream echo through the trees, but it wasn’t mine. It belonged to someone else. As I fell deeper into the abyss, the world slowly faded to absolute silence.

Is this what it feels like to die? If so, everyone was wrong to fear it. It’s nothing at all. It feels almost peaceful, as if I am being lulled into a dark, eternal sleep.

Then it hit me.

The pain.

It was unlike anything I had ever experienced—as a human or as a vampire. It consumed me entirely. Every single cell in my body felt as though it were shattering into pieces, only to be forcibly rebuilt from the ashes.

Something is wrong. This isn’t death. This isn’t eternal silence.

This is... a veil of darkness.
