Chapter One - The Voice in the Dark
The first time Daniel heard the voice, he thought he was dreaming.
“Daniel.”
His eyes snapped open.
Darkness surrounded him.
For a moment, he didn't move. He listened to the familiar hum of the old ceiling fan above him and the faint sounds of the neighborhood outside.
Everything seemed normal.
Then the voice came again.
“Daniel…”
This time, it sounded closer.
Daniel slowly pushed himself upright.
“Who's there?”
Silence.
He reached for his phone on the bedside table.
The screen refused to turn on.
He pressed the power button again.
Nothing.
“Seriously?”
He pressed it a third time.
The screen suddenly lit up.
NO SIM CARD
Daniel frowned.
That was strange. His SIM had been working perfectly earlier.
Before he could investigate, a notification appeared.
UNKNOWN NUMBER
He stared at it.
A message.
Don't look behind you.
Daniel froze.
His fingers tightened around the phone.
He slowly lowered it.
There was something behind him.
He could hear it.
A faint sound.
Breathing.
Daniel's heart began pounding.
Another message appeared.
I SAID DON'T LOOK.
He swallowed hard.
His thumb moved across the screen.
Who are you?
The reply came almost instantly.
Someone who has been waiting for you to wake up.
Daniel stared at the words.
Why?
Three dots appeared.
Then disappeared.
Then appeared again.
Finally, another message arrived.
You have three minutes.
Daniel's stomach tightened.
Three minutes for what?
He typed quickly.
What happens in three minutes?
No answer.
Instead, the lights suddenly came on.
Daniel flinched.
His eyes darted around the room.
Nothing.
Nobody.
Then he noticed the wall above his bed.
A symbol had appeared there.
A black symbol he'd never seen before.
Yet somehow, looking at it sent a strange chill through his body.
He knew what it meant.
RUN.
Daniel barely had time to process it.
His bedroom door slammed open.
A tall figure stood in the hallway.
Its face was hidden beneath a black hood.
Daniel couldn't move.
The figure raised one hand.
The symbol above Daniel's bed began to glow.
The voice returned.
But this time, it wasn't coming from the phone.
It was inside his head.
They found you.
Daniel's lips trembled.
“Who?”
The figure stepped into the room.
The voice whispered:
Your parents.
Daniel's blood ran cold.
His parents had been dead for twelve years.
A knock sounded downstairs.
Three slow knocks.
Knock.
Knock.
Knock.
Then a woman's voice floated through the house.
A voice Daniel knew better than anyone.
“Daniel?”
His mother's voice.
“Open the door.”
Daniel stared at the hooded figure.
His phone vibrated one last time.
He looked down.
Whatever you do...
Another message appeared.
DO NOT LET YOUR MOTHER INSIDE.
