Chapter 1

☆ A note from me: Hello. There are some things I need you to know before you start reading. This part of the story will contain heavy themes such as death and grief. It’s okay if you are not comfortable with things like this but I don’t suggest reading this book if you aren’t. All the characters in this story are from my own creativity as well as the events that happen. If any of these events do resemble something that actually happened in real life, then that would be a coincidence!

Part 1: The Heartbreaking Tragedy

Chapter 1 - A “Normal” Nightshift

—----------------------------------------------------

I finished stocking food on the shelves. I took the night shift today so I would be able to take more days off. I have a niece and nephew to take care of back home too. It’s not that I’m struggling to get money, I’m average. I think I could do better though. Working at this place wasn’t bad. There’s better places but I'm grateful. A worker tapped me on the back. I turned to her.

“Could you help me with lifting these packs of water please?” She asked.

“Sure.”

I followed her to the back of the store. There were five large packs of them on the ground.

“Why are these so heavy? Is it me or the water?” She groaned.

I helped her put two packs of them on the shelves. “I think you’re strong, you could be exhausted that’s all.”

“Yeah.” She nodded.

We got the other three packs onto the shelves. “Thanks Lilac.”

“No problem!” I smiled.

A thought crossed my mind. “Do you know what time it is?” I asked the worker before I walked away.

“10:30. Why?”

“I can go on my break now.” I sighed with relief.

She chuckled. “Good for you. My break isn’t until another hour!” “Oof. Good luck then.”

I turned around and headed for the break room. I was stopped by people though. After some customer service, I successfully made it to the room. I went and grabbed some chips from the machine then sat down somewhere. I took out my phone and started looking at posts on Twitter. Nothing really caught my eye so I just looked at fanart on Pinterest. There was a trend with people with dog ears or flower crown filters on them in pictures. One of my co-workers glanced at my phone.

He shook his head. “I don’t get the point of that trend, do you?”

“I think it’s not that bad, it can just be overused a lot.”

“I guess that’s true but I’m not a fan of it.”We continued discussing other trends we had our own opinions on while snacking on chips until we had to work again. I cleaned myself up and went to the right side of the store. While I was cleaning up an aisle, I caught a glimpse of what it looked like outside. It was pitch black. About an hour until I could go home, I thought.

I yawned and rubbed my eyes. The struggle is real. At least the place isn’t crowded during the day. I continued to clean up dust and drink spills while dealing with some difficult customers. After that, some co-workers and I talked some more to pass time. All of a sudden, I felt a vibration from my pocket. This felt urgent. I pulled over to the side to check who it was. It was my nephew. Something must be wrong if he’s calling this late. I picked up anxiously. “Hello?”“We need help!”

“What happened?”

“I don’t know…I feel dizzy and my head feels cloudy…Camilla won’t wake up…I feel like I’m going to pass out…” He paused.

“I’m coming home! Try to fight the dizziness!”

I hung up and rushed to find my manager. I spotted him drinking coffee and talking to someone near the cafe in the store.

I went up to him. “Excuse me!”

He stopped from his conversation and looked at me.

“Yes Lilac?”

My heart pounded. “I need to leave. I have an emergency at home.”

“Is everything okay?”“Something came up for my niece and nephew. They could be in danger.”

“Alright, I give you permission to leave. I’ll tell HR what’s happening.”“Thank you!” I clocked out then ran out of the store and into my car. I sped out of the parking lot then onto the road. My house isn’t far away from the store but there was a lot of traffic on the road. Things might get worse if I don’t get there soon. I don’t even know what my niece and nephew did to get dizzy and all that stuff. It’s so late, what could’ve possibly happened? I decided to drive out and find another way back home. I found a shortcut which led to my neighborhood after driving for a few minutes. I parked into my driveway and then got out. I rushed to my backdoor and got my key but the door was already unlocked…?
