The Fall

Thirteen Years Ago

The rain fell like acid, black and oily, coating the cracked Brooklyn pavement with a sheen of filth. Streetlights flickered above, their orange glow barely piercing the smog-choked air.

Joseph Grayson was seventeen, angry, and stupid.

He ran.

Ran from sirens. From shouts. From the three kids he’d bloodied in the alley behind the school. He didn’t care if they deserved it. He just wanted them to stop laughing.

He clutched his torn jacket tighter and ducked into an open gate—an old industrial complex long since abandoned. The rusted sign above the fence read:

VIRECHEM LABORATORIES – BIO-SECURE ZONE

AUTHORIZED PERSONNEL ONLY

He didn’t stop.

His boots splashed through fetid puddles as he pushed deeper inside the dead building. The air smelled of rot, metal, and something sharp beneath it. Like burned plastic and chlorine.

He didn’t see the tripwire.

CLANG.

A steel shutter slammed behind him. The lights buzzed to life.

Joseph froze.

In front of him, down a corridor of cracked tile and shattered windows, stood a figure in a long white coat, gloved hands behind his back.

“Hello, Joseph,” the man said calmly. “You weren’t supposed to come in yet. But… here we are.”

Joseph’s fists clenched. “How do you know my name?”

The man stepped closer. His face was smooth, too smooth. Surgical calm.

“My name is Dr. Elias Vire. And I’ve been watching you for a long time.”

“Go to hell,” Joseph spat.

He turned to run—but the floor gave way beneath him.

One second he was on solid ground. The next, he was falling.

Glass shattered. Metal groaned. Liquid hissed.

He plunged into a vat of churning, neon-green fluid—thick like syrup, hot like fire. It clawed at his skin, filled his mouth, his nose, his lungs. He screamed, but no sound escaped.

The pain was beyond anything he’d ever felt.

And then, it stopped.

Not because he escaped.

Because something inside him broke.

Nerves shorted out. Bones snapped, then sealed. Skin peeled, then fused.

Joseph didn’t feel pain anymore.

He didn’t feel anything.

---

He woke up strapped to a metal table.

Dr. Vire stood over him, scribbling on a clipboard.

“You died for thirty-seven seconds,” he said, smiling faintly. “And when you came back… well. We both know you’re not the same anymore.”

Joseph tried to scream. Nothing.

“You don’t have to thank me,” Vire said, setting the clipboard down. “You were lost. Directionless. I gave you purpose. And when you’re ready… you’ll change the world.”

The lights dimmed.

And in the cold dark, Joseph Grayson stopped being a boy.

And something else was born.
