CHAPTER 1 : A NEW CHAPTER IN HER AMBITIOUS LIFE

“Fuck, fuck, fuck! What the hell? What happened?” He couldn’t believe what had just happened.

“Hey, hey, wake up, dear. Patronia, hey, wake up, baby. Please, don’t scare me. Baby, come on, wake up, okay? Here, look—I’m standing right here. I’m not touching you.”

The boy was genuinely terrified. He quickly pulled up his pants and, as he put them on, kept muttering under his breath,

“Baby… Patronia…”

But the girl lying unconscious in front of him still hadn’t moved. He was terrified. Whatever alcohol had been left in his system had worn off long ago, and the adrenaline had quickly turned into fear.

He rushed outside, locked the gate behind him, and checked out of the bar. He had come there looking for some fun, but he’d ended up with a disaster on his hands.

“Ma’am, there’s a new report—”

Violet had barely started speaking when her superior, seated across from her, snapped almost in a shout.

“Violet, can’t you see I’m busy? And what report? What case? Mr. Thomson decided that I won’t be the one handling these cases anymore.”

Now Violet finally understood.

“My transfer letter came through. A new girl is joining today. Starting today, you’ll report to her.”

“Thank God I’m finally done with these athletes’ death cases. They’re so damn bizarre and cringe. I don’t even know what kind of sick cases these are. They make my soul want to leave my body every time I have to look at those corpses.”

She rolled her eyes before adding bitterly,

“Now you get to report to your new crazy, psycho bitch of a boss.”

“Ameliaaaa, just shut up!”

Before she could say anything else in anger, a deep, heavy American male voice suddenly echoed through the room.

She immediately rose from her seat.

“Sir…”

The moment she saw the man standing in front of her, she began to feel a strange sensation crawling through her body. It was obvious from her expression that she was starting to panic, especially with the way she looked at him.

Mr. Thomson seemed to understand exactly what was going on.

“You should go. Let me talk to her. She’s not in her right state of mind right now,” he said to Violet.

He tried to keep his voice calm, but the moment Violet left, he turned on Amelia like a lion.

“You know you’re being suspended because of the way you treat your juniors and your constant misconduct, don’t you? This case has been escalated to the higher authorities, Amelia. This is already your third case, and so far, as a homicide investigator, you haven’t shown any real performance.

“Instead, you’ve mentally harassed the people who work under you. Your suspension order is now in effect. After you brief the new homicide detective about her duties, you’re leaving this office.

“And yes, while you’re suspended, don’t forget to work on your behavior and the way you speak to people.

“Now, good-bye. Pack your things and get the fuck out of this office. Right now.”

After Thomson left, she felt a little better. “Bastard,” she whispered under her breath. There was no way she could say it any louder—if he heard her, he would probably kill her.

“Huh… what am I supposed to do now?” she muttered, running a hand through her hair. “I’ve been telling everyone that I’m being transferred, but instead, I’m getting suspended here…”

“Ohhhh, God!” she groaned dramatically. “What sin did I commit in my past lifeee?”

She was sitting in her office when Markus arrived, slightly out of breath. It was hard to tell whether he was breathless from excitement or from running.

He gave a light knock on the door before entering.

Yilden was seated in front of him—a young woman with short, silky, boy-cut hair, dressed in a dark blue uniform. She slowly lifted her gaze.

Her ash-gray eyes were as steady and unreadable as ever.

Markus immediately straightened his posture.

“Madam Yilden,” he said formally. “Markus Entores, reporting. The Chief has called for you in his office. He said there’s something important that requires your attention.”

She simply said, “Okay,” and stood up. Without another word, she walked past him and headed out of the office.

The moment she was gone, Markus let out a long breath, one he apparently had been holding in for God knew how long.

“Finally…” he muttered under his breath, relaxing his shoulders. “Miss Yilden Brookmerz, we’re finally free from you.”

He paused, then sighed in relief.

“Huh… God, thank you for this holy gift.” 😭

“May I come in, sir?”

After reaching the office of the Head Lieutenant, Yilden asked permission to enter.

“Sure, Yilden. You may.”

He invited her inside in a very calm voice. Once she entered, he gestured for her to take a seat, and Yilden quietly sat down.

“You called for me, sir?”

“Yes, I did, Miss Yilden Brookmerz.” He leaned back slightly in his chair. “The Head Facility needs your intelligence on a case. Would you be willing to assist us?”

She sat in the cab, replaying her conversation with the Head Lieutenant in her mind. There was nothing wrong with any of this. She had always known that things like promotions and transfers were simply part of the job. But leaving New York behind—that was something new.

She had never been away from her family before, but Yilden Brookmerz had never been the kind of woman to run from a challenge. And this was simply another challenge, another new chapter in her career.

She was still lost in her thoughts when the taxi driver’s voice pulled her back to reality.

“Where to?”

“San Francisco Police Station ”

She handed him a small slip of paper with the address written on it. The driver studied it carefully for a moment before nodding and starting the car.

“We’ll be there in a little while. It’s not very far, so you’ve saved yourself quite a few dollars.”
