Chapter 1

People look at others walking by and assume their lives are flawless. They stare with bitter eyes, whispering, "I wish I had her life. He’s so lucky." They burn with jealousy over a polished image, completely blind to the agonizing quiet battles fought behind closed doors. People are breaking under the weight of secrets they are too terrified to speak aloud. Envy is a silent poison—and it infects the mind before you even realize you've swallowed it.

The sun spilled warm, golden light across the bedroom, waking six-year-old Sarah. On the surface, she was a burst of morning energy, but like clockwork, the tears began. Whether it was the dreaded thought of school or simply the fragile dramatics of childhood, her morning routine always started with soft weeping. As the youngest, she occupied that uniquely pampered space in the house—cherished, protected, and endlessly doted upon by a mother and father whose love felt straight out of a storybook.

Her mother bathed her gently, dressing her until she looked pristine alongside her two older siblings. They were the picture-perfect family.

Skin smooth like a sun-ripened fruit,

A laugh that bloomed, soft and bright,

With a smile framed in porcelain white,

A delicate blossom untouched by the cold.

Every morning, Sarah and her siblings set off for school, their bags heavy and their lunchboxes filled with delicious treats. There was Rehaan, the sharp and brilliant older brother, and Zoya, the quick-witted middle child. And then there was Sarah—gentle, timid, and quiet as a shadow. In the classroom, she shrank into the background, far too soft to ever stand up for herself.

To the rest of the world, Sarah was a blessed, beautiful child from a ideal home. They envied her family. They envied her youth. But a gilded cage is still a cage, and beauty easily disguises a bruising soul.

Nobody asked what was happening beneath her glowing skin. Nobody saw the darkness quietly creeping into her world.

This is the story of Sarah—and the fragile illusion of perfection.
