The Night the Blood Was Born
The rain had been falling for three days.
Across the ancient valley, the dead leaves clung to the mud and the wind dragged the smell of smoke through the trees. Far beyond the hills, where no kingdom had yet raised a banner, an army marched beneath a sky without stars.
At its head rode a warlord.
His name was Vlad Dracula.
Long before the Five Kingdoms had borders, before kings sat upon their thrones and before men learned to whisper the names of creatures
hiding in the dark, Dracula had already built a reputation in blood.
He was not a monster.
Not yet.
His soldiers followed him because he never asked them to march where he would not go himself. His enemies feared him because he did not surrender, did not negotiate when victory was within reach, and did not forget those who betrayed him.
That night, however, Dracula was not thinking about war.
He was thinking about death.
His horse stopped at the edge of a ruined chapel.
Dracula looked toward the broken doors. The place had been abandoned for generations, yet a single candle burned inside.
His hand tightened around the hilt of his sword.
“Stay here,” he ordered.
His men exchanged uneasy looks.
“No one follows me.”
He entered alone.
The chapel smelled of wet stone and old ash. Moonlight poured through the shattered roof, illuminating rows of ruined statues. At the far end stood a man dressed entirely in black.
He looked almost human.
Almost.
“You have been searching for me,” the stranger said.
Dracula drew his sword.
“And you have been watching me.”
The stranger smiled.
“For a very long time.”
Thunder rolled above them.
Dracula stepped closer. “Who are you?”
“Someone who knows what you fear.”
“I fear nothing.”
The stranger's smile widened.
“Every man says that before death finds him.”
The candles went out.
For a moment, there was nothing but darkness.
Then two golden eyes opened.
Dracula attacked.
Steel crossed the darkness with a violent crack. The stranger moved faster than any human being Dracula had ever seen. Dracula struck again. And again. Every blow missed.
Then the stranger caught his wrist.
The strength in that hand was impossible.
Dracula was thrown across the chapel and crashed through a stone pillar.
He rose slowly, blood running from his mouth.
For the first time in his life, Dracula understood that he was facing something he could not defeat.
The stranger approached.
“Your life is ending,” he said. “But it does not have to end tonight.”
Dracula stared at him.
“What do you want?”
“Nothing.”
The stranger extended his hand.
“I am offering you eternity.”
Outside, the storm grew louder.
Dracula looked at the hand for a long moment.
He should have walked away.
He should have killed the stranger if he could.
Instead, the warlord reached forward.
The stranger's eyes burned brighter.
Pain exploded through Dracula's body.
He fell to his knees.
His heart stopped.
For the first time in his life, Vlad Dracula died.
But he did not remain dead.
When his eyes opened again, the world had changed.
He could hear the beating hearts of his soldiers outside the chapel.
He could smell their blood through the walls.
He could hear the rain striking leaves hundreds of feet away.
And beneath all of it, he could hear something else.
A voice.
Not the stranger's.
Something ancient.
Something hungry.
Dracula rose.
The stranger stood before him.
“Welcome,” he whispered.
Dracula looked down at his hands.
His veins had turned black.
His eyes reflected the candlelight in crimson.
Outside the chapel, one of Dracula's soldiers screamed.
Then another.
Dracula turned toward the door.
“Do not fight what you have become,” the stranger said.
Dracula smiled.
It was the first smile he had ever worn that frightened even him.
By dawn, the valley was silent.
Centuries later, kingdoms would rise and fall. Five crowns would divide the world. Witches would be hunted. Werewolves would be cursed. Dragons would disappear into legend. Hunters would swear that monsters were nothing more than stories told to frighten children.
And vampires would learn to fear one name above all others.
Vlad Dracula.
The first vampire.
The king of the night.
But history would forget one thing.
The man who created him had not disappeared.
Somewhere beyond the reach of kings, beyond the borders of the Five Kingdoms, something ancient had begun to awaken.
And when it opened its eyes, the age of blood would begin again.
