Chapter 1: The storm that changed everything
The weather forecast had predicted a tornado storm in the next few days. I looked out the window. It was barely 4 p.m., but the skies were as dark as night. The wind whistled, and I could hear the sound of trees a mile away.
“The storm is coming!” Ethan cried.
“Relax, everything will be fine.”
I was born in the countryside and took over my family's business. We were very successful farmers and were the major suppliers of all things dairy and grains. Ethan happens to be my neighbour. He came back from the university a while ago. I didn't have the opportunity to further my education, but I'm pretty sharp.
Ma and Pa died, leaving everything to me. I took over the business, and everything was going well…
Until today…
The wind grew stronger, but there was no tornado in sight.
“There are six twisters in the North. Houses are being torn to shreds,” Ethan said.
He kept looking at his phone to get updates on the tornado storm. Ethan has always been a scaredy-cat.
“Quit worrying. Everything wi—”
Something caught my attention. I could hear gunshots.
I ran towards my balcony. The sound was coming from the open field.
“Look up!” Ethan screamed.
In the distance were two jets in the air. They seemed to be attacking each other, but they were so far away.
“A mighty twister is heading to the west. It's the biggest we've ever seen,” the news reporter said from Ethan's phone.
The twister came so fast and engulfed the jets.
“BOOM!”
An explosion. A bright light shone from the belly of the twister. The jets were scattered, and the twister kept coming towards us.
“Ethan, run!” I screamed.
We were too late.
The twister carried parts from the jet, and they flew towards us. The engine of the plane fell on Ethan's leg. He gave a loud shout.
I tried to remove the engine from his leg, but it was too heavy. There was blood everywhere.
Suddenly…
“Bang!”
The balcony broke, and we fell. Luckily, the engine rolled away from his leg. Ethan's leg was broken.
I carried Ethan and tried to put him in our underground shelter. It was so far away.
The twister carried rocks, which broke my back, and sharp rods that went through my skin.
“Thud!”
I fell to the ground.
Still carrying Ethan, I didn't want him to be hurt.
We approached the underground shelter, and I threw him in with my last strength. I wanted to go in…
“Nooooo!” Ethan cried.
I looked up, and a rod carried by the twister pinned me down. It went through my chest.
I closed the entrance to the shelter while Ethan screamed.
Life flashed before my eyes.
“Is this… the end?”
I looked up and saw something rushing towards me. It looked like a broken piece of glass.
My eyes were closing. I was dying.
The glass fell on my chest and pierced me.
I lost consciousness…
