Summary

Slowly, carefully, I stepped forward. Ranvir flinched slightly, his breath catching, but I didn't stop. I reached out, my small hand resting softly, steadily against his arm. I smoothed down the fabric of his sleeve, letting my touch convey a calm, grounding warmth. "It's okay," I whispered softly, offering him a small, reassuring smile that reached my eyes. "Don't be scared. We are going to be okay."

Chapter 1

The heavy wooden door of the bedroom clicked shut, and the familiar, comforting scent of Ankur’s sandalwood cologne filled the air. For three years, Prachi had known every rhythm of her husband—the way his shoulders slumped after a long day at work, the exhaustion etched into his face, and the instant, radiant shift in his expression the moment his eyes landed on her.

Ankur dropped his briefcase on the side table and crossed the room in two long strides, pulling Prachi into his arms before she could even say a word. His hands settled possessively around her waist, burying his face in the crook of her neck with a deep, shuddering sigh of pure relief.

"I missed you all day, Prachi," he murmured, his voice thick with adoration. He pressed a warm, lingering kiss against her jawline, his lips already trailing downward with that familiar, intense hunger that never seemed to fade. "Every second I’m away from you feels like too long."

Prachi let out a quiet breath, her fingers resting lightly against his chest. Normally, the fierce, unconditional devotion Ankur had for her was her safest sanctuary. But tonight, a heavy, suffocating knot sat in the center of her chest, making it hard to lose herself in his embrace.

"Ankur... wait," she whispered, her hands gently pressing against his shoulders to pause him.

Ankur blinked, pulling back just enough to look down into her troubled eyes. His gaze instantly softened, the raw desire in his dark eyes shifting into deep concern. He cupped her cheek with calloused, gentle fingers, his thumb brushing over her lower lip. "What is it, meri jaan? What happened? Did Kabir give you a hard time today?"

"No, Kabir’s asleep," Prachi said softly, looking away for a moment as the weight of the afternoon conversation with her mother-in-law came rushing back. She took a steadying breath, meeting his gaze again. "It’s... it’s about Ranvir."

Ankur’s expression tightened, a shadow of deep pain crossing his features. Ever since his younger brother’s accident, the house had been draped in a quiet, permanent grief. The physical injuries had healed, but the trauma had left Ranvir’s mind fractured, reverting him to the innocent, dependent state of a child.

"Ma talked to me today," Prachi continued, her voice trembling slightly. "About Ranvir's future... and about my younger sister."

Ankur frowned, pulling her a little closer against him, sensing where the conversation was heading. "What did Ma say?"

"She wants me to talk to my parents," Prachi said, the words tasting like ash in her mouth. "She wants my younger sister to be married to Ranvir."

Ankur went completely still. "What?"

"Ma said..." Prachi swallowed hard, tears prickling at the corners of her eyes. "She said my father is old and his health is failing—he might not be around much longer, and my sister has no one else to truly secure her future. Ma thinks bringing her into this house as Ranvir's wife will solve everything. It will give Ranvir someone to care for him, and give my sister a home."

"That’s insane," Ankur said instantly, his jaw clenching as he shook his head. "Prachi, Ranvir needs a full-time caregiver and medical supervision, not a teenage bride whose life will be completely tied down to caring for someone with the mind of a child. How could Ma even think of putting that on your sister?"

"Because she’s desperate, Ankur! And she looks at me and thinks, 'Prachi is settled here, her sister can be too.' She doesn't see the unfairness of it. She only sees a way to lock down Ranvir's care permanently within the family." Prachi’s voice cracked, a tear finally spilling over her lashes. "And she expects me to convince my family. She told me it would be beneficial to everyone."

Ankur’s eyes burned with a mixture of anger at the situation and profound empathy for his wife. He pulled her flush against his chest, wrapping his arms around her with fierce, unyielding protection.

"Look at me, Prachi," he whispered fiercely, tilting her chin up so she had to look into his eyes. "You are not responsible for carrying this impossible burden. We will figure this out. I will talk to Ma. You will not break your heart trying to destroy your sister's future."

The sheer intensity of his support, the absolute unwavering loyalty in his voice, hit Prachi like a physical wave. All the walls of anxiety she had built up during the day crumbled away. She let out a ragged breath, her arms wrapping tightly around his neck as she buried her face in his shoulder, letting his strength absorb her terror.

Ankur felt the shiver run through her frame, and the protective instinct in him flared into something hot and consuming. He pressed a deep, reverent kiss into her hair, his hand sliding down to curve firmly against the small of her back, pressing her even closer until there was no space left between them.

"Let me take care of you tonight," he murmured against her ear, his voice dropping an octave, turning rough and low with the deep, aching need he always felt for her. "Let me make the rest of the world disappear."

Prachi looked up, her dark eyes meeting his, finding the anchor she so desperately needed. Without a word, she reached up and captured his lips in a deep, desperate kiss, needing his warmth to chase away the cold reality waiting outside their bedroom door.

Ankur groaned softly into her mouth, his hands moving with practiced, worshipful reverence. He unfastened her blouse with steady fingers, his breath hitching as the fabric parted to reveal the soft, warm swell of her chest. With an obsessive, tender hunger, he lowered his head, his lips closing over the sensitive peak of her breast. A breathless gasp escaped Prachi’s lips, her fingers tangling frantically in his hair as he drew her in, his tongue swirling in slow, deliberate strokes that made her arch off the mattress.

His hands slid beneath the silk of her petticoat, his touch finding the sensitive warmth of her womanhood, caressing her with a featherlight pressure that made her hips lift instinctively toward him. The urgency between them shifted from panic to passion, a fierce, desperate reminder of the life they had built together.

When Ankur finally parted her legs and settled between them, sliding into her welcoming, heated depths with a heavy, steady rhythm, Prachi closed her eyes and let herself be entirely consumed. In the dark sanctuary of their room, wrapped in the heavy, breathless heat of his lovemaking, they let the outside world fade away entirely, holding onto each other like they were the only two people left in the universe.
