A Debt To Pay

All Rights Reserved ©

Summary

High price. High stakes. No rules. I thought agreeing to Fernando’s terms was the easiest decision of my life—a world of luxury, protection, and no strings attached. But the finer things always come with a catch, and the line between a transaction and temptation was the first thing to blur. Then the past walked back into my present, carrying the one face I thought I’d never see again. Now, trapped in an empire of wealth and deception, I’m playing a game where every secret is fatal, and the one person who could save me is the last person I should touch. Some debts are paid in cash. Others are paid in blood🩸

The Encounter

The fluorescent lights of the hospital hallway buzzed with a low, relentless hum, mirroring the dull, agonizing throb behind Cassy’s eyes. Through the reinforced glass of Room 412, her younger brother, Luke, looked impossibly small beneath the white sheets, hooked up to a web of monitors that measured how fast his body was giving up.

One hundred and eighty thousand dollars.

That was the magic number the lead surgeon had delivered twenty minutes ago with a sympathetic, practiced tilt of his head. Upfront deposit for the procedure, Miss Taylor. By Friday.

Cassy sat on the cracked vinyl chair, her thumb hovering over a contact on her worn phone screen.

Jasmine.

They hadn't spoken since high school. Back then, they were the "pity projects"—the only two scholarship girls at St. Jude’s Academy, forced to endure the casual cruelty of rich kids who drove sports cars before they had licenses. That elite hellhole was also where she’d met Kelvin. Brilliant, wild, high-born Kelvin, who had loved her fiercely enough to break every rule until his family whisked him away to treat his sick mother abroad, erasing him from her life overnight.

After Kelvin vanished, life kept taking. First came dropping out of university. Then her mother’s agonizing, drawn-out passing. Now, Luke was all she had left.

When Jasmine had reconnected on social media months ago, flaunting private yachts and red-soled shoes, Cassy had judged her. But Jasmine’s voice echoed in her head: “I stopped begging for scraps, Cassy. Wealthy men pay for beauty and discretion. It’s just business.”

Cassy looked down at her hands, raw from double shifts at the diner. Her pride couldn't save Luke. Her morals wouldn't pay the surgeon.

She pressed call.

Forty-eight hours later, Cassy stood inside Velvet & Vow, an unmarked Mayfair townhouse that smelled of expensive vanilla and mahogany.

"Listen closely, Cassy," Jasmine said, sliding a sleek tablet across a marble vanity. "Rule number one: total discretion. You sign an NDA before you even breathe near a client. Rule number two: the agency handles the money. They take a thirty percent cut, but you’re protected and the paychecks never bounce."

Jasmine leaned in, her eyes dead serious. "Some men here just want a pretty arm piece for galas—pure companionship. Others pay for... full access. You set your boundaries, but the higher the access, the faster Luke gets his surgery."

Over the next two hours, a styling team transformed Cassy. Her thrift-store jeans were swapped for a sweeping emerald silk gown; her tired eyes were elevated with subtle, smoky shadow. When she looked in the mirror, she barely recognized the woman staring back.

"Tonight is the preview mixer," Jasmine whispered, adjusting Cassy’s neckline. "Keep your eye out for Fernando Castille. They call him the Icy Mogul. He pays top dollar purely for companionship, he's notoriously hard to please, and he never requests a woman more than three times. Don't expect warmth just play your cards right."

The mixer was held in a penthouse lounge draped in velvet and warm gold lighting. Men in bespoke suits sip scotch while women who looked like supermodels mingled effortlessly. Cassy stood near the edge of the room, her heart hammering against her ribs.

Then, the ambient noise in the penthouse suddenly dropped.

A tall man in a dark, tailored charcoal suit stepped out from the VIP lounge. The moment Cassy’s eyes fell on him, an electric chill ran down her spine. The broad set of his shoulders, his commanding stride, the razor-sharp line of his jaw he looked hauntingly, terrifyingly familiar, pulling at a memory buried deep in her chest.

She didn't realize she was staring until his gaze cut through the crowd and locked directly onto hers.

Fernando Castille stopped dead in his tracks. For a fraction of a second, the impenetrable ice in his dark eyes cracked into pure, unadulterated shock. Standing before him wasn't just another girl in an expensive dress; she was the living image of his late wife.

Recovering his composure before anyone noticed, Fernando dismissed his assistant with a brief gesture and walked straight toward her. The subtle scent of dark cedarwood and amber filled the space between them.

"You aren't drinking," he observed, his deep baritone sending a shiver through her. He stepped closer, studying her face with an intensity that felt physical. "And you look at this room with absolute disdain."

Cassy forced herself to hold his gaze, pushing back the eerie feeling of familiarity. "I don't disdain it. I just find the illusion exhausting."

"An illusion?" He tilted his head, genuinely intrigued. "Most people in this room consider this the peak of reality wealth, beauty, influence."

"It’s an economic transaction masquerading as a party," Cassy replied evenly, her voice quiet but steady. "Everything here operates on temporary valuation. The art on the wall is an asset hedge, the champagne is a tax write-off, and the social interactions are just leveraged negotiations. Calling it a 'gala' is clever branding."

A faint, dangerous smirk touched the corner of his lips. For the first time in years, a woman wasn't reciting rehearsed compliments. She understood the mechanics of his world and saw right through it.

"A sharp mind wrapped in silk," he murmured, extending a hand with slow, deliberate charm. "I'm Fernando. Fernando Castille."

Cassy placed her hand in his, feeling the steady, overwhelming heat of his grip. "Cassandra Taylor."

"Tell me, Miss Taylor... if everything here is a transaction," Fernando said, his eyes narrowing with deep interest, "what is it that you came here to buy tonight?"
