Summary

A girl transfers to a new school, hoping for a fresh start. But everything changes when she meets the school's most popular boy. From the moment they meet, he seems to hate her—and she has no idea why. Until she discovers something strange. He already knows her. Years ago, their families were connected by a secret neither of them remembers completely. And the closer she gets to uncovering the truth, the more she realizes that his hatred isn't really hatred. There's a reason he's been keeping his distance. And someone desperately wants that secret to stay buried. Now, with questions piling up and the past slowly coming back to light, she has to decide how far she's willing to go to uncover the truth—even if the truth changes everything she thought she knew.

Chapter 1:

Chapter One

“Mom! Mom, I'm leaving!”

I hurried down the stairs, my backpack hanging from one shoulder as I checked my phone for what felt like the hundredth time.

“I'm coming!” Mom called from the kitchen.

A few seconds later, she appeared in the doorway, still holding the dish towel she'd been using.

She looked me up and down.

“You're really leaving without eating?”

I glanced at the clock.

“Mom, I'll be late. It's my first day.”

“Kimora, you haven't even had breakfast.”

“I'll be fine.” I grabbed the strap of my bag and headed for the door. “I'll get something from the cafeteria.”

She sighed.

“You and this school of yours.”

I smiled. “I'll call you when I get there.”

She walked over and fixed the collar of my shirt like I was still six years old.

“Be careful, darling.”

“I will.”

“And don't trust everybody just because they smile at you.”

I laughed softly. “Mom, I'm going to college, not war.”

She didn't laugh.

For a second, she just looked at me.

There was something strange in her expression—something I couldn't quite understand.

Then she smiled.

“Just promise me you'll be careful.”

“I promise.”

I opened the door.

“Love you, Mom.”

“Love you too, Kimmy.”

I stepped outside, completely unaware that my first day of college was about to change my life.

And that somewhere on that campus was a boy who already knew my name.

jo987_123: This is a good story, but it needs a good editor to go through this iteration and fix the mistakes. The pov changes from 1st person to 3rd person, often, and sometimes within one sentence. It needs a liberal sprinkling of punctuation marks throughout, and a decision needs to be made about the char...

Sharda: I really enjoyed the pace of this story. It was mostly realistic, but It was tough to wrap my head around that a 13-year-old boy would be so intuitive and a friend to his mom. My 13-year-old daughter is super smart and says I am her best friend so I guess it is possible. I struggled because boys usu...
