“The Founder’s Chamber” Chapter 10

All Rights Reserved ©

Summary

Summary Beatrice, Nathaniel, Elias, and Eleanor remain within the mysterious chamber beneath Breedlove Manor after discovering that the ancient book knows Beatrice's name. The chamber begins responding directly to Beatrice, revealing that she is not simply another member of the Breedlove family—she is connected to something much older. Fresh footprints appear where no one had walked, an impossible staircase briefly manifests, and the ancient book declares that “The first heir has returned.” Eleanor is forced to admit that secrets were deliberately hidden from Beatrice and that her mother knew more about the manor than Beatrice had ever been told. When the staircase disappears, the chamber leaves Beatrice with three ominous words: THE HEART KNOWS. The chapter closes with the realization that Breedlove Manor may not merely be revealing its secrets—it may be revealing Beatrice herself.

Chapter 10

THE NEVERMORE CHRONICLES

BOOK ONE: BREEDLOVE MANOR

Chapter 10

The Founder’s Chamber

Every family begins with a name. Every legacy begins with a promise.

The words seemed to remain in the air long after Beatrice had read them.

She stood perfectly still.

The chamber beneath Breedlove Manor was silent, but it was not empty.

She could feel that much.

The air pressed against her skin with a strange warmth that did not belong beneath several layers of ancient stone. Her lantern trembled slightly in her hand, though there was no wind.

Across the chamber, Eleanor had not moved.

Neither had Nathaniel or Elias.

The ancient book remained open upon the stone pedestal.

Its pages had stopped turning.

The words were still there.

THE BLOOD REMEMBERS WHAT THE MIND FORGETS.

Beatrice swallowed.

Then the voice came again.

“Welcome home.”

This time, she knew where it had come from.

Not the corridor.

Not the walls.

The chamber itself.

She looked toward the darkness beyond the pedestal.

“Who are you?”

Nothing answered.

Elias shifted beside her.

“Beatrice.”

She turned.

His expression had changed. The usual curiosity in his eyes had been replaced by caution.

“What?”

“Look at the floor.”

She lowered her lantern.

At first, she saw only the circular pattern carved into the stone.

Then the light caught something else.

Footprints.

Fresh ones.

They began near the far wall and continued toward the pedestal.

Beatrice's breath caught.

“They weren't there before.”

Nathaniel stepped closer.

“No.”

He crouched beside the nearest print without touching it.

“Someone has been here.”

Eleanor's face had gone pale.

“Someone?”

Nathaniel looked up at her.

“Or something that walks like someone.”

Elias gave him a sharp look.

“That isn't helpful.”

“It wasn't meant to be.”

Despite herself, Beatrice almost smiled.

Almost.

Then she noticed something else.

The footprints did not lead away from the pedestal.

They stopped directly in front of it.

As though whoever had made them had stood there.

Waiting.

“For us?” Elias whispered.

Beatrice looked at the ancient book.

“I don't think we were invited here by accident.”

The lantern flame suddenly rose.

Every shadow in the chamber stretched toward the walls.

And beneath the stone floor came a sound.

A single, deep knock.

Beatrice froze.

Another followed.

Then a third.

Three slow knocks.

Eleanor whispered a name.

“Seraphine.”

Beatrice turned toward her.

“You know that name.”

Eleanor hesitated.

“That is not what I said.”

“It is what you meant.”

Eleanor looked away.

Nathaniel stood.

“Eleanor.”

The older woman closed her eyes.

For several seconds, she said nothing.

Then she walked toward the pedestal.

“I had hoped we would never come this far.”

Beatrice's fingers tightened around the lantern.

“Why?”

“Because once the Founder’s Chamber opens, there is no returning to the life you knew before it.”

The words settled heavily between them.

Elias looked toward the passage.

“We can still leave.”

Eleanor shook her head.

“No.”

Another knock sounded beneath them.

This one was louder.

“The chamber has already recognized her.”

Beatrice stared at Eleanor.

“Recognized me?”

Eleanor looked directly into her eyes.

“Yes.”

The lantern flame bent toward Beatrice.

For one heartbeat, the chamber seemed to breathe.

Then the ancient book turned a page by itself.

Beatrice stepped closer.

A new inscription had appeared.

Not written in ink.

Written in a dark red that seemed almost black in the lantern light.

BEATRICE VIOLET BREEDLOVE.

Her name.

Her full name.

She could not move.

Nathaniel reached for her arm.

“Beatrice.”

“I see it.”

The page changed again.

Beneath her name appeared a single sentence.

THE FIRST HEIR HAS RETURNED.

Elias whispered, “First heir?”

Beatrice stared at the words.

“No.”

She shook her head slowly.

“That can't be right.”

“Why?” Nathaniel asked.

“Because I was never told there was a first heir.”

Eleanor's expression told her the truth before she spoke.

“You weren't.”

Beatrice turned toward her.

“Why?”

“Because some truths are buried for protection.”

“Whose protection?”

Eleanor looked at the ancient walls.

“Everyone's.”

The chamber grew colder.

Beatrice felt it move through her hands.

The book closed.

The sound echoed through the chamber like a door being slammed shut.

Then something beneath the pedestal clicked.

Nathaniel immediately moved forward.

“Everyone back.”

A narrow seam appeared in the stone floor.

Elias stepped beside him.

“What did you find?”

“A mechanism.”

Nathaniel brushed away centuries of dust.

The seam widened.

Stone shifted beneath their feet.

Beatrice's heart began to pound.

The circular floor slowly divided.

Beneath it was a staircase.

Not descending.

Ascending.

Elias stared.

“That makes no sense.”

Nathaniel looked toward the ceiling.

“It doesn't have to.”

The staircase rose into darkness above them.

But there was no opening in the ceiling.

No visible passage.

Only blackness.

Beatrice lifted her lantern.

The first step appeared.

Then the second.

Then the third.

A faint silver light glimmered somewhere far above.

Eleanor whispered, “The Founder never built this chamber to keep people out.”

Beatrice looked at her.

“What was it built for?”

Eleanor's eyes settled upon the staircase.

“To bring someone back.”

The silver light brightened.

And from somewhere above came the faintest sound of footsteps.

One.

Two.

Three.

Someone was walking toward them.

Beatrice raised the lantern.

“Who's there?”

The footsteps stopped.

Silence returned.

Then a woman's voice drifted down through the darkness.

Soft.

Familiar.

And impossibly close.

“You finally remembered.”

The lantern went out.

Beatrice heard Elias curse.

Nathaniel caught her hand.

Eleanor whispered something she had never heard before.

A prayer.

Then the silver light above them disappeared.

And in the darkness, something touched Beatrice's shoulder.

She turned.

Nothing was there.

But a whisper brushed her ear.

“Not yet.”

The lantern burst back to life.

The staircase was gone.

The floor was whole again.

Only the ancient book remained.

Open.

Waiting.

And upon its final visible page were three words.

THE HEART KNOWS.

Beatrice stared at them.

For the first time since entering Breedlove Manor, she understood something that frightened her more than any ghost, hidden passage, or forgotten name.

The manor had not been revealing its secrets to them.

It had been revealing them.

And somewhere beneath the stone, something had begun to wake.

Ku_Rolet: The novel was good, and I really enjoyed reading it. I love the leads and their bond, but I have one question that confused me. How could Tristan have been dreaming about his mate since he was a child if Omara was already mated to someone else before him? If Kyle had accepted Omara, would Tristan ne...
