Summary

Emma has always believed that kindness is never wasted—even if the world rarely returns it. Working tirelessly to support her struggling family, she refuses to let hardship harden her heart. Adrian S. Black, the cold and powerful CEO of Black International, trusts no one. To protect his billion-dollar empire from enemies lurking within his own family and boardroom, he agrees to a marriage contract with a complete stranger. Their arrangement is simple: no love, no feelings, and no broken rules. But as secrets unravel, betrayals strike from every corner, and dangerous rivals threaten everything Adrian has built, Emma's unwavering compassion begins to melt the walls around his guarded heart. When the line between a business deal and true love disappears, they must decide whether to risk everything for each other—or watch the ink of their promises fade forever. In a world where power is bought, loyalty is tested, and love comes with a price, can two wounded hearts rewrite their destiny? This novel contains less sexual actions, violence and hurt speech.

Chaper 1 The Girl Who Never Gives Up

The first rays of sunlight slipped through the faded cream curtains of the Carter family's small home in Brooklyn, painting golden streaks across the worn wooden floor.

Emma Carter was already awake.

She had been awake for nearly an hour.

The kettle whistled softly as she stood in the tiny kitchen, stirring a pot of oatmeal while humming an old tune her grandmother used to sing. The scent of cinnamon filled the room, making the modest house feel warmer than it really was.

Outside, the city was just beginning to wake.

Inside, Emma's day had already begun.

"Morning, sweetheart," her mother, Elizabeth Carter, said as she entered the kitchen, wrapping a cardigan around herself.

Emma smiled.

"Good morning, Mum. Breakfast is almost ready."

"You didn't have to wake up this early again."

"I know."

Elizabeth sighed.

"You always say that, and you always do it anyway."

Emma laughed softly.

"Someone has to keep this family running."

A few moments later, heavy footsteps echoed down the hallway.

Thomas Carter emerged, still wearing his old work boots from the previous day. Years of construction work had left his hands rough and scarred, but his smile remained as gentle as ever.

"Smells wonderful," he said.

"It's only oatmeal."

"It's your oatmeal," Thomas replied. "That makes it special."

Emma rolled her eyes playfully.

"You always exaggerate."

"I never exaggerate when it comes to food."

The family laughed together.

For a brief moment, the worries waiting outside their front door disappeared.

After breakfast, Emma helped her younger sibling gather schoolbooks that had been repaired with tape more times than anyone could count.

"You'll be late," Emma reminded gently.

"I know, I know."

Emma straightened the child's collar before handing over a packed lunch.

"There."

"What would we do without you?"

Emma smiled.

"I don't plan on letting you find out."

As everyone left, Emma remained behind for a moment.

She looked around the small house.

The wallpaper had begun peeling near the windows.

One dining chair leaned slightly because one leg had been repaired twice.

The sofa had a blanket carefully placed over a tear in the fabric.

It wasn't luxurious.

It wasn't perfect.

But it was home.

She whispered quietly,

"One day..."

One day, she'd buy her parents a better house.

One day, her father would never have to climb another dangerous scaffold.

One day, her mother would stop worrying about unpaid bills.

One day.

That dream was the reason she never stopped trying.

Emma hurried toward the subway station, weaving through busy streets filled with impatient commuters.

An elderly woman carrying several grocery bags stumbled on the curb.

Without hesitation, Emma rushed forward.

"Are you alright?"

"I think so," the woman replied, embarrassed.

Several apples rolled into the street.

Emma quickly gathered them before traffic reached them.

"Thank you, dear."

"It was nothing."

The woman studied Emma for a moment.

"You're one of those people who help without expecting anything back."

Emma smiled.

"My grandmother used to say kindness costs less than regret."

The woman squeezed her hand.

"Don't ever lose that."

Emma nodded before continuing toward work.

She had no idea those words would stay with her for a very long time.

Emma worked for one of New York’s most respected luxury event management companies which specialised in luxury galas, corporate launches, charity balls, fashion shows and VIP weddings.

It wasn't too glamorous.

Most days were spent carrying decorations, calling suppliers, calming nervous clients, and solving problems no one else noticed.

But she loved every minute of it.

Because every successful event made people smile.

And that mattered to her.

Near lunchtime, her manager walked over holding a folder.

"Emma?"

"Yes?"

"You've got mail."

Emma frowned.

"Mail?"

She shot a quick glance at the folder he was holding.

"Not paper." He laughed. "An email."

She quickly opened her inbox.

Her heart skipped.

BLACK INTERNATIONAL.

She blinked.

No.

It couldn't be.

Hands trembling slightly, she opened the message.

Dear Ms. Emma Carter,

We are pleased to invite you to interview for a temporary Events Coordinator position for Black International's upcoming Global Charity Gala.

Interview Date: Tomorrow, 9:00 a.m.

Location: Black Tower Headquarters.

Emma read it again.

And again.

Black International.

The biggest multinational company in the country.

The kind of place people spent years trying to get into.

Her manager looked over her shoulder.

"Is that...?"

Emma nodded slowly.

"I think so."

He grinned.

"Well..."

He extended his hand.

"...looks like someone finally noticed your talent."

Emma stared at the email, barely able to breathe.

Could this really be the opportunity she'd been praying for?

Or was it simply another door that would close before she reached it?

She looked out the office window toward the towering skyline.

Far away, one skyscraper stood taller than all the others.

Black Tower.

She had no way of knowing that behind those glass walls was a man whose life was about to collide with hers...

...and change both of them forever.
