The Edge of Her Desk
The final email was sent. Resignation effective in two weeks. Isabella Rossi leaned back in her comfy chair, the worn leather groaning under her weight.
Five years.
Five years of organizing Damien Cross's life, of anticipating his needs before he knew he had them, of existing in the periphery of his vision like a well-maintained piece of office furniture. And for what? To watch him walk past her desk every morning, a cloud of expensive cologne and preoccupied energy, his gaze fixed somewhere just beyond her shoulder.
He was in his office now, the door slightly ajar. The low murmur of his voice drifted out, sharp and strained. He was on the phone with his lawyer, again. The divorce was eating him alive, turning the formidable Damien Cross into a coiled spring of tension. His wife, Chloe, had not just cheated; she had done it with his best friend and business partner, a betrayal so public and humiliating it had become society page fodder.
Isabella swiveled in her chair, her eyes tracing the masculine lines of his silhouette through the glass partition. Broad shoulders, now rigid with stress. A dark head bent over his desk. She knew the exact texture of his hair, how it curled just slightly at the nape of his neck. She knew the way his jaw clenched when he was annoyed, the subtle twitch in his left eye when he was truly furious. She knew him better than anyone, probably better than Chloe ever had. And he didn't even know her favorite color.
Tonight, that changed.
Her heart hammered against her ribs, a frantic drumbeat of fear and exhilaration. She'd spent the last month transforming herself. The sensible flats were replaced by heels that made her legs look endless. The shapeless blouses were gone, traded for silk that clung in all the right places. Tonight's armor was a simple, sheath dress in a deep emerald green that made her skin glow and her eyes look almost feline. It was a declaration. A final, desperate attempt to be seen before she disappeared for good.
The call ended. Damien slammed the phone down, the crack echoing through the quiet executive suite. He ran a hand through his hair, messing it up, and for a second, he looked lost. Isabella's chest tightened with an ache that was five years old. Then his mask snapped back in place, all cold with barely contained rage. He was the CEO again.
He strode out of his office, his path taking him right past her desk. He didn't look at her. Of course, he didn't.
"Mr. Cross?" Her voice was softer than she intended, but it stopped him.
He turned, his eyes finally landing on her. Really landing on her. For the first time, there was a flicker of something other than polite dismissal. It was confusion, then a slow, dawning recognition that the woman sitting at his desk was not the same one who had been there this morning. His gaze dropped, taking in the dress, the hint of cleavage, the bare legs ending in ridiculously high heels. A muscle jumped in his cheek.
"Yes, Isabella?" His voice was rougher than usual.
"I was just finishing up the merger projections for tomorrow's meeting. I think you'll find the revised numbers in the third tab are more... favorable." She stood up, letting the movement draw his eye. The dress was short, and the action made it ride up just a fraction more.
He watched her, his expression still unreadable. "Good. Leave them on my desk."
He started to turn away.
No.
This was it. All or nothing.
"Actually, I brought you a fresh coffee." She gestured to the tray on her desk, a steaming mug sitting next to the cold, untouched one from this morning. "I thought you might need it."
He hesitated, then walked over, stiffy picking up the mug, his fingers brushing hers. The contact was electric, a jolt that shot up her arm and pooled low in her belly. His eyes widened almost imperceptibly. He felt it too.
"Thank you." He took a sip, his gaze fixed on her over the rim of the cup. He was looking at her mouth. He was definitely looking at her mouth.
"I'm glad you like it," she breathed, her voice barely a whisper.
He set the mug down with a decisive click. "Isabella, what are you doing?"
The question hung in the air between them, charged with unspoken things.
"I'm... not sure what you mean." She played innocent, but her heart was trying to beat its way out of her chest.
He took a step closer, invading her personal space. The scent of him—clean, expensive, with an undercurrent of pure male—was overwhelming. "This." He gestured vaguely at her, at the dress, at the charged atmosphere. "This is not... you."
"Maybe you don't know me as well as you think, Mr. Cross." Her voice was stronger now, laced with a challenge she didn't know she possessed.
His eyes darkened, the blue turning stormy. He was so close she could see the fine lines around his eyes, the shadow of stubble on his jaw. He was angry, but it wasn't directed at her. It was the same restless, caged energy he'd had for weeks. And for the first time, she realized she might be the only one who could offer him a release.
"No," he murmured, his gaze dropping to her lips again. "I suppose I don't."
He was going to kiss her. She knew it with a certainty that vibrated through every nerve ending. Her body hummed with anticipation, a liquid heat pooling between her thighs. This was it. The moment five years of silent longing had been building toward.
He leaned in slowly, giving her every opportunity to pull away. She didn't. She couldn't. She tilted her head up, meeting him halfway.
His lips met hers, and it wasn't gentle. It was hungry, demanding, a desperate clash of teeth and tongues. It was a kiss fueled by weeks of anger and betrayal, and for her, years of pent-up desire. His hands came up to cup her face, his thumbs stroking her jawline as he deepened the kiss, claiming her mouth with an intensity that made her knees weak.
She responded in kind, her hands fisting in the front of his shirt, pulling him closer. She could feel the hard planes of his chest against her breasts, the solid strength of him. He tasted of coffee and something else, something uniquely him. It was intoxicating.
He backed her up until her thighs hit the edge of her desk, his body pressing against hers, pinning her in place. The hard ridge of his arousal was unmistakable against her stomach, and a thrill shot through her. She had done that. She had elicited this response from the untouchable Damien Cross.
He broke the kiss, panting, his forehead resting against hers. His eyes were closed, his breath coming in ragged gasps.
"Isabella," he groaned, her name a raw sound of need and confusion. "We shouldn't..."
"Don't," she cut him off, her voice firm. "Don't say that. Don't pretend you don't want this." She reached down, her hand boldly cupping the hard length of him through his trousers.
His eyes flew open, shocked and dark with a lust so potent it made her own breath catch. He let out a hiss, his hips bucking involuntarily into her palm.
"You have no idea what you're asking for," he warned, his voice a low growl.
"Then show me."
