The Breaking

The walls of Blackgate Penitentiary weren’t made to keep men like Adrian Vire inside. They could hold the common criminals, the petty thieves, the desperate — but not him.

He lay on the cold steel slab of his isolation cell, eyes closed beneath a furrowed brow, feeling the faint pulse of electric restraints biting into his wrists and ankles. For years, those restraints had been his only companions — shackles meant to bind a mind as dangerous as his.

But Vire had always known the chains were only physical.

He smiled thinly.

They forgot the toxin inside me was stronger.

A soft hum rose beneath the floor — almost imperceptible to the guards on patrol. Vire’s fingers twitched, sending the hidden nanites coursing through the prison’s old wiring. They moved like ghosts, small machines infiltrating circuits, hijacking systems.

Lights flickered.

A camera’s lens cracked and went dark.

The steel bars groaned as the hinges rusted by years of neglect began to corrode faster.

In the control room, a young guard’s fingers danced nervously across the console.

“Uh… power surge in Sector C. Probably just a glitch,” he muttered.

But the screens blinked — showing static where surveillance had once been.

Back in his cell, Vire’s eyes snapped open, glowing faintly with the eerie green hue of the toxin that still coursed beneath his skin.

No glitch.

This was precision.

His strength surged as the nanites dismantled the energy field around him. The electric shocks faltered.

The restraints shattered like brittle glass.

He sat up smoothly, muscles taut, a predator unleashed.

“Let’s end this,” he whispered.

With a deliberate calm, Vire stepped into the corridor, shadows bending to his will.

Alarms screamed to life.

Voices shouted orders.

Steel doors slammed shut behind him.

But none could hold him.

The air reeked of fear as the guards scrambled.

He moved faster than their eyes could track, a dark silhouette streaking through halls once designed to trap monsters.

At the outer gate, Vire faced the last line — a dozen armed guards, weapons raised.

They fired.

Bullets slammed into him with no effect but a flicker of irritation.

He advanced.

With brutal efficiency, he tore through their formation.

A fist collided with a jaw.

A spine snapped under crushing force.

The last guard collapsed, trembling, blood spilling onto cold concrete.

Vire stood amidst the wreckage.

A cold grin stretched across his face.

“Tell Joe Grayson the nightmare has just begun.”

Outside, rain began to fall.

And the city held its breath
