A Crash Course In Destiny
The automated voice echoing from the vaulted ceiling of Terminal 3 sounded less like a public announcement and more like a countdown to an execution.
“This is the final boarding call for flight 1422 with service to New York JFK. Immediate boarding at Gate 22. Doors will close in exactly three minutes.”
Claire didn’t care about the hundreds of annoyed travelers she was aggressively cutting off.
She barely registered the glare of a frustrated TSA agent or the sharp squeak her white leather sneakers made every time she executed a jagged turn through the slow-moving crowd.
Her breathing was shallow, a burning knot tightening in her chest as her thumb swiped furiously at her phone screen.
Her flight back east had already been delayed twice by a freak weather cell, and now, a sudden last-minute gate change across the terminal was about to turn her flawless million-dollar corporate presentation into a catastrophic, career-ending failure.
She had spent three sleepless nights preparing the files packed securely inside the black hardshell suitcase trailing right behind her. Everything was riding on tomorrow morning at nine.
She couldn’t let it slip away. Not after Blake—her cocky ex-boyfriend—had spent years convincing her she was only hired as office eye candy.
At the exact same moment, running from the opposite direction, Julian was dealing with his own brand of airport chaos.
He was a whirlwind of movement, a stray strap from his leather duffel bag slipping off his shoulder while he aggressively used one hand to jam a tangled laptop charger back into an unzipped backpack.
He wasn’t stressed about the board of directors; he was the most popular face in creative marketing, selected to represent the firm at a massive convention in Chicago purely because his unshakeable charisma could charm a brick wall.
But Julian had a fatal flaw—he lived so entirely in the present moment that time had a habit of evaporating beneath him.
He looked up at the digital terminal billboard, a light, breathless laugh escaping his lips. Gate 22. Opposite end of the concourse.
The terminal air was thick, heavy with the competing scents of burnt espresso, stale cinnamon pretzels, and the underlying chemical tang of jet fuel blowing in from the tarmac.
Travelers moved like sludge.
Claire rounded the blind intersection near the boarding gate at a full, frantic sprint, her eyes dropping to her screen for a single, fatal half-second to confirm her seat change.
Julian burst around the exact same corner, his head turned backward as he finally managed to yank his zipper shut.
The impact was jarring—a hard, shoulder-to-shoulder collision that echoed with a dull thud.
The sheer momentum sent them both spinning. Claire’s footing completely gave way on the slick, highly polished tile, and she fell forward with a sharp gasp.
Julian tried to reach out, his instincts kicking in to catch her, but the force of the collision took them both down.
Claire crashed forward, landing directly on top of his chest.
The air rushed out of Julian in a sharp grunt as he hit the floor flat on his back, absorbing the entire brunt of her weight.
For a terrifying, suspended second, the frantic roar of the airport terminal seemed to vanish.
Claire lay frozen against him, her face pressed into the crook of his shoulder, legs tangled, intensely catching the sharp, distinct scent of his expensive, woody cologne.
Beneath her cheek, his heart was hammering a frantic rhythm against his ribs.
Her hair had fallen loose from its clip, cascading over his shoulders like a dark curtain and trapping them in a brief, accidental pocket of space.
Julian’s hands had instinctively wrapped around her waist to steady her, his firm grip radiating heat right through her blazer.
“Oh my god,” Claire choked out,
her face instantly burning a bright crimson as she scrambled backward off his chest, her hands slipping against the tile as she dropped onto her knees.
The sheer panic in her throat was a physical weight, her hair blurring her vision as her phone skated across the polished tile like a hockey puck.
Julian’s backpack had torn open completely, loose tech and plastic cases violently erupting onto the floor.
Between them, their identical black hardshell carry-on bags slammed together with a loud plastic crack, flipping sideways and sliding into a tangled heap under the harsh, fluorescent lights.
“I am so, so sorry—” Claire stammered, frantically reaching for her stray phone.
“No, no, sorry! Entirely my fault,” Julian replied.
He was breathless, pushing himself up onto one elbow, his other hand coming up to touch his chest where she had just been resting.
His lean arms swam across the floor, scooping up scattered charging blocks and stray cords.
Even in a blind scramble, his secure, easygoing nature kept him from snapping. He looked up, his eyes briefly meeting her strikingly beautiful but utterly terrified face.
“Are you alright? Nothing broken?”
“Final boarding call for Passenger Claire Brooks and Passenger Julian Vance. The jet bridge door is closing.”
The automated voice screamed their full names in unison.
It was a jolt of pure electricity.
They both froze for a fraction of a second, their eyes widening in shared, unadulterated terror as they registered each other’s full identity for the very first time.
There was no time for workplace pleasantries, no time for charm, and certainly no time to check the smudged leather luggage tags.
Without a single word, they both lunged forward.
Claire snatched the closest black telescoping handle.
Julian grabbed the other.
Shoving their retrieved phones into their pockets, they scrambled to their feet, turned on their heels, and sprinted away in completely opposite directions toward their closing gates.
Behind them, the blind corner of Gate 22 sat empty, leaving nothing but a lingering heat and the faint scent of a woody, expensive cologne in the frantic terminal air.

The starting is good 👍🏼
I'm excited for the next chapter plots.
