Chapter 1
Chapter 1 — Breedlove Manor
The road to Breedlove Manor was not marked on every map.
Some maps showed the surrounding forests, the silver-gray river, and the distant rise of the mountains. Others showed only a stretch of woodland where the road seemed to disappear altogether.
Those who knew the country well understood that roads had their own ways of choosing who they wished to carry.
On a cool autumn morning in the early years of the nineteenth century, a carriage made its slow way through the trees.
The wheels rolled over damp earth and scattered leaves. Mist rested between the trunks, thin enough to see through yet thick enough to make the forest seem farther away than it truly was.
Inside the carriage sat a little girl.
Beatrice Violet Breedlove was only two years old.
She was quiet.
Not frightened. Not crying.
Simply watching.
Her small hands rested together in her lap while she looked through the carriage window at the forest beyond.
Trees passed one after another.
Dark trunks.
Silver birches.
Branches heavy with leaves.
Every so often, a raven crossed the pale morning sky.
Beatrice followed each one with her eyes until it disappeared.
Across from her sat Isadora Breedlove.
The woman watched the child carefully.
"You see them, don't you?" Isadora asked softly.
Beatrice turned toward her.
"The birds."
The little girl nodded.
Isadora smiled.
"They seem to know the way."
Another raven landed briefly upon a branch beside the road.
The carriage slowed.
For one peculiar moment, the bird looked directly through the window.
Beatrice lifted one tiny hand.
The raven remained still.
Then it flew.
The carriage continued onward.
Neither woman spoke of it again.
Not yet.
By late morning, the forest began to open.
Beyond the trees lay a broad stretch of meadow, green beneath the fading autumn light. A river moved beyond it, its surface catching the sky in broken silver.
And there, beyond an iron gate, stood Breedlove Manor.
It was larger than Beatrice had imagined.
Stone walls rose beneath steep roofs, softened in places by ivy. Tall windows reflected the gray sky. Chimneys reached upward from the roofline, and smoke drifted lazily from more than one of them.
The house did not look abandoned.
It did not look unwelcoming.
If anything, it looked as though it had been waiting.
The carriage stopped before the gates.
A man approached from the manor grounds.
Nathaniel Breedlove.
He was young enough that the years had not yet placed their full weight upon his face, yet there was something unusually steady in his manner.
He opened the carriage door.
"Welcome home," he said.
Beatrice looked at him.
Home.
The word was unfamiliar.
Isadora stepped down first.
Then she reached into the carriage.
"Come, Beatrice."
The child hesitated.
Nathaniel extended his hand.
She stared at it.
Then, slowly, she placed her little hand in his.
His fingers closed gently around hers.
"There's no need to be afraid," he said.
Beatrice looked past him toward the manor.
"I am not afraid."
Nathaniel glanced at Isadora.
A faint smile touched his face.
"No," he said. "I suppose you aren't."
They walked together through the gate.
The moment Beatrice stepped onto the manor grounds, a breeze moved through the trees.
Leaves rustled overhead.
Somewhere near the house, a bell sounded once.
Nathaniel stopped.
Isadora looked toward the manor.
Neither spoke.
Beatrice looked up.
"Was that the house?"
Nathaniel's expression changed.
Only slightly.
"No."
A second passed.
Then he smiled.
"At least, I hope not."
Isadora gave him a look.
"Nathaniel."
He laughed quietly.
"Forgive me."
They continued toward the front doors.
Breedlove Manor seemed larger with every step.
There were gardens beyond the eastern wing, stables farther along the western grounds, and a path disappearing toward the woods.
Beatrice noticed all of it.
She noticed the servants moving between the buildings.
She noticed horses watching from the stable doors.
She noticed the old stone fountain near the entrance.
And she noticed something else.
A raven sat upon the roof.
It was watching her.
Beatrice stopped.
Nathaniel followed her gaze.
"You have an admirer already."
She looked at him.
"Is it mine?"
Nathaniel smiled.
"Perhaps."
The great doors opened before them.
Warm air flowed from inside.
The scent of woodsmoke, bread, lavender, polished furniture, and something sweet filled the entrance hall.
Beatrice stepped across the threshold.
For the first time, she felt something she could not name.
It was not happiness exactly.
It was not recognition.
It was something quieter.
Something deep.
The feeling that she had arrived somewhere she had been expected.
Behind her, the doors closed.
The sound echoed through the great hall.
Beatrice looked back.
For just an instant, she thought she heard a whisper beneath the settling wood.
Not a voice.
Not quite.
More like the house breathing.
She turned toward Nathaniel.
"Did you hear that?"
He looked down at her.
"Hear what?"
Beatrice glanced toward the walls.
The feeling had already vanished.
"Nothing."
Nathaniel studied her for a moment.
Then he took her hand again.
"Come along, little one."
They walked deeper into Breedlove Manor.
Above them, somewhere beyond the high ceiling, an old clock began to tick.
And in a quiet room no one had entered that morning, a single page of an old household journal turned by itself.
Breedlove Manor had received its newest member.
And the house remembered.
