All Rights Reserved ©

Summary

One is a captive from a dying golden empire. The other is a brutal warlord wielding the forbidden dark. Aurelia was raised to fear the shadows, but when she is forced to flee into the treacherous, freezing mountain passes alongside her greatest enemy, a terrifying power awakens within her—the Eclipse. A volatile, ancient magic born from gold starlight and liquid midnight. Cassian is the dangerous King of the Shadow Wielders, but the exact millisecond his path collides with Aurelia’s, their fated mate bond snaps shut with a savage, unyielding force that threatens to push his legendary restraint over a cliff. Hunted by elite inquisitors and running out of time, they are forced to form a reckless alliance to survive the wild wilderness. But as the telepathic friction between their souls burns hotter than the war on their heels, they must face a lethal truth: the only thing more dangerous than the enemies tracking them down... is the primal hunger of the bond forcing them together.

Chapter 1: The Dark Command

The roaring embers of the stone hearth inside Cassian’s private royal chambers did little to pierce the sudden, icy dread that settled deep into the very base of Aurelia’s lungs. The air in the room felt impossibly heavy, suffocating, and thick with the distinct aroma of ancient leather parchment, dark mahogany oils, and burning cedar wood. The ghost-like, flickering phantom echo of Caleb’s whimpering voice from High Priest Malakai’s targeted broadcast hung in the silence, vibrating painfully against the unyielding fated bond anchored tightly behind her ribs.

Three days.

They had exactly seventy-two hours before the High Priests turned their devastating, unholy solar fire on the innocent novices, low-tier healers, and ordinary citizens of her old sanctuary ward. Malakai wasn’t just trying to put out the sparks of the revolution they had ignited at the Aethelgard tower; he was setting a direct, calculated trap using the exact people she used to work with every single day of her life. He knew her conscience would never let a hundred innocent people bleed to death in her place. He was counting on her deeply ingrained empathy to drag her back to the chopping block, using her past as a blunt instrument to break her spirit.

I am going to rip his throat out, a dark, predatory thought roared directly inside her head, vibrating across the shared mental connection with terrifying clarity.

Aurelia blinked, turning away from the dancing orange flames of the fireplace to look at her mate. Cassian stood by the heavy oak doors of the chamber, his broad shoulders squared, his jaw clenched so tightly the muscles along his throat were corded like steel wire. The molten gold rings around his pupils weren’t just swirling—they were a violent, turbulent sea of liquid fire that illuminated the heavy shadows of his sharp features. He looked every bit the warrior king of legend, a figure carved out of midnight and unyielding stone, but beneath the armor, he was fracturing.

Through their sealed mental link, a staggering wave of lethal protective fury and absolute terror crashed into Aurelia’s mind, so intense it made her knees tremble. The mental static was so thick and heavy she could almost taste the bitter, metallic scent of burning ozone on her tongue. He was a king, but right now, the primitive beast inside him was entirely unchained. He was a predator ready to tear the entire continent apart to keep his mate safe from the Light Empire’s executioners. The sheer thought of her walking back into Malakai’s custody was physically torturing him, sending jagged spikes of cold panic across their shared bond. He was a man who had lost everything before, and his soul was flatly refusing to let history repeat itself with her.

“Cassian,” Aurelia said aloud, her voice a calm, steady anchor slicing through his raging internal storm. She walked across the dark, thick rugs, her bare feet silent on the cold stone floor, and placed her palms flat against his leather-clad chest.

The exact millisecond her bare skin made contact with his fabric, the static frequency of their shared magic flared into life. A soft, prismatic gold starlight rippled down her arms, interweaving flawlessly with the wisps of liquid midnight smoke that instinctively rose from his shoulders to shield her. The physical connection grounded his volatile energy instantly. The violent, erratic drumming of his heart beneath her palms slowed down, shifting into a deep, heavy, and resonant throb that perfectly matched the exact rhythm of her own pulse.

You are not walking into that city alone, sweetheart, Cassian’s voice resonated in her mind, rough, deep, and laced with an intense, carnal possessiveness that sent a hot shiver straight down her spine. I don’t care if the entire grand solar fleet stands at the inner walls. I am marching the elite Vanguard into the heart of the Capital to burn that altar to ash before they can lay a single finger on you.

We have to be smart, Cassian, she answered him through the wire, her golden-flecked eyes locking onto his with unyielding intensity. She slid her hands up to his broad shoulders, anchoring herself to his strength. If we just launch an open, reckless invasion, Malakai will execute Caleb and the others the second our forward vanguard hits the outer perimeter. We have to use the fire we just started. We have to rely on the ordinary citizens who finally saw the truth across the mirrors.

Before Cassian could pull her closer to claim her lips in a desperate, hard reassurance, the heavy iron latch of his chamber door clicked loudly, breaking the spell between them.

Vanya strode into the room, her silver hair loose from her usual braid and her dark leather scout armor still smelling faintly of the soot and stone-dust from Aethelgard’s lower barracks. She didn’t look at their tangled fingers, the close proximity of their bodies, or the raw, undeniable visual of their combined magic humming in the dark. She was entirely focused on the crisis at hand. Instead, she stepped directly to the center of the chamber and slammed a heavy leather satchel onto the large stone table, unrolling a detailed tactical map of the continent’s inner circles.

“The border garrisons are folding as we speak,” Vanya reported, her sharp eyes gleaming with a fierce, victorious energy as she pointed to the western lines. “The transmission worked better than we could have dreamed. Half of the Light Empire’s third infantry line threw down their crystal spears the second they saw the live illusion of the Citadel. They realize they’ve been starving a kingdom of regular families, not a den of monsters. The propaganda is dying out in the streets. But Malakai has already anticipated the mass desertions. He’s locked down the Capital’s inner walls and activated the primary solar wall defense grid.”

Cassian stepped back from Aurelia, his tactical mind taking over as the King of the Shadow Lands returned to the surface. He leaned over the stone table, his long, calloused fingers tracing the jagged borderlines on the parchment. “The solar wall is powered by three localized sub-stations hidden along the mountain ridges. They pull energy directly from the sun-wells and weave it into a thermal field. If we try to cross the threshold while the grid is active, the heat waves will vaporize my shadow-wielders instantly. It’s an impenetrable shield that cuts us off from the valley.”

“Then we target the sub-stations on our march,” Aurelia said, stepping up beside him, her gown whispering against the stone floor. Her finger pressed down firmly on a small mining town situated right along the main mountain pass toward the Capital. “We have three days. We ride light, we ride fast, and we use the mental link to coordinate our attacks before they can reinforce the defensive lines. Vanya, mobilize the Vanguard rebels. We are marching straight into the light.”

The determination in her voice left no room for argument. Cassian stared down at the map, his face hardening into an expression of unyielding resolve. The path ahead was a suicide run, a desperate race against a ruthless dictator who held all the cards. But as he looked at Aurelia, her skin glowing with the brilliant, untamed starlight they had unlocked together, he knew they weren’t running anymore. They were the storm.

“Prepare the mounts,” Cassian commanded, his voice dropping into a lethal, kingly register that echoed off the stone walls. He looked back at Aurelia, his thoughts tightly wrapping around hers over the bond with a dark, heavy promise. Rest while you can, my queen. Because when we cross that border, we don’t stop until the throne is ours.
