Chapter 1

A small town in France. The occasional sound of passing cars, green forests, warm summer air, and the flies that never seemed to leave her alone. What a simple day, just like any other.

Emilie woke to another lazy morning.

Morning? No. It was three in the afternoon.

She had stayed awake all night listening to the songs of the group she adored, lost in her own dreams. Just before dawn, her eyes had finally surrendered to sleep while she stared at the ceiling. Now, dark circles hung beneath her eyes, a tired reminder that she was already twenty-eight—a young woman living in a passive kind of depression.

“Ahh… another boring day,” she sighed, reaching for her phone.

As she did every day.

When she saw the notifications, she excitedly opened YouTube. The group she adored had released a new song. She listened to it intently, feeling as though the song had been written just for her. Her heart filled with happiness. The dull routine of her morning suddenly seemed wrapped in pink clouds.

Sipping the coffee she had just made while humming the song that made her heart race, she whispered, “One day, people will listen to me like this too.”

Emilie had a talent for writing and singing, but her lack of confidence had reached extraordinary levels, and she had wasted that talent for years. Yet one small act of courage was about to turn into a long journey toward everything she had ever dreamed of.

By the age of twenty-eight, she had completed three university degrees, earned her master’s degree with top honors, and worked for a long time in the office job she had once dreamed of. But even after achieving what she thought she wanted, she eventually realized that it was not truly her dream—and that she was unhappy.

Her real dream was art. She finally understood it. She wanted to write songs and sing them. She believed she would find happiness in the applause of others. So, in a moment of reckless courage, she quit the job she had worked so hard to obtain and moved to a quiet, remote town.

Of course, life did not turn out the way she had imagined. She had gone from being a successful, ambitious woman with dreams to an unemployed woman struggling financially and battling her own insecurities. Perhaps you had to fade before you could shine—and she had finally reached that point.

Staying awake until morning, sleeping fitfully during the day, surviving mostly on coffee, spending entire days watching series and films, and slowly losing hope had become her routine. Anxiety about the future, social pressure, and an increasingly stagnant life had followed.

Emilie felt lost.

One sleepless evening, with exhaustion pouring from her eyes, she found an old mask buried at the back of her wardrobe. It had been part of a costume from her university years.

When she put on the black mask decorated with stones, an idea suddenly came to her.

“I could make a video wearing this mask. Then nobody would know who I am.”

She placed her phone on the table, stood in front of it, and began singing one of her own songs. Using a fake name, she uploaded the video to YouTube.

“Nobody will watch it anyway,” she thought, before going to bed.

She woke to another ordinary morning.

No. No, this morning was different—but Emilie did not know it yet.

She thought she had woken up to the same kind of morning as always. A few minutes later, she would realize that she had actually woken up to the most beautiful morning of her life.

When she picked up her phone, she saw countless notifications. Hundreds of people had liked and commented on her video overnight. Emilie could barely contain her excitement as she read the messages.

“Who is this masked woman?”

“Where can we find the original version of this song?”

“When is the music video coming out?”

There were hundreds of messages like these.

Emilie remained silent, while the messages continued to multiply. She assumed that, eventually, the attention would fade, and she went on living her quiet life.

But after a month, the likes and curious messages were increasing instead of disappearing. Her mysterious silence only made people more curious.

The situation also caught the attention of Lena, a talent scout for a music agency. Lena managed to reach Emilie and excitedly told her about the plan she had in mind.

But Emilie did not feel ready to step into the public eye. One part of her was thrilled by the opportunity that had come knocking at her door, while another was frightened and hesitant.

She wanted to make her dreams come true, but she was also afraid of losing her freedom and returning to her old life. Walking through the streets unnoticed and singing had been a way for her to breathe. She was afraid of losing that freedom—of having to watch every step she took, of being criticized, and of suffering under the crushing weight of social pressure.

Emilie told Lena about her fears.

But Lena did not seem ready to give up. After all, she was a relentless talent scout for a famous agency. Lena told Emilie not to answer immediately, that she should think about it, and that Lena would find a way forward.

Then she left.

As Lena listened to Emilie’s song from time to time and thought about how she could persuade her, she suddenly realized something.

That was the moment everything began.

Perhaps fate did not want this opportunity to slip away from Emilie, and Lena was suddenly struck by an idea.

Emilie had uploaded the video on an impulse, and in that moment, all she had come up with was a short alias: ENA.

People in the comments were constantly referring to her as Ena.

Lena met with Emilie again to share her brilliant idea.

She excitedly explained that Emilie could keep her real identity hidden while still sharing her art with the world.

“But how would that work?” Emilie asked.

“Of course it’s possible. To the public, you are now Ena—the mysterious masked singer. No one has seen your face, and no one knows your name. First, we’ll arrange a program so you can show your talents to the agency. You’ll appear wearing your mask. You’ll have managers and executives working with you, and we’ll sign a confidentiality agreement. Beautiful days are waiting for you, Emilie. Trust me,” Lena said.

In an ordinary café, two women were making plans that could change a life.

This was more than an opportunity. It was the moment when twenty-eight years of hopelessness began to bloom again. It was the moment life seemed to say to someone it had overlooked for years: your turn has finally come—now you have to run.

It was the moment when, just as she thought everything was over, life whispered: it isn’t over until I say it is.

Emilie was thrilled when she heard the idea.

“Is this really possible? Could I actually do this?” she kept asking.

As Lena continued explaining, she became even more excited.

“Believe me, this is a brilliant idea. It’s crazy, and it’s going to be a project that gets people talking,” Lena said.

Still, Emilie did not want to make a rushed decision. Her mind was becoming more and more confused. She kept wondering what she would tell her family and the people around her, and how she would explain suddenly disappearing so often.

One part of her was filled with excitement and disbelief; another was consumed by fear and pessimism. Her mind was crowded with questions.

“This offer… Maybe an opportunity like this will never come again in my life. But what if I fail? What if this is too big for me?”

The offer she had once dreamed of was now standing in front of her as a real possibility.

But why was taking the first step so difficult?

While Emilie struggled with these thoughts, she received an invitation to the wedding of an old school friend. The invitation distracted her from her thoughts, at least for a little while.

Emilie arrived at the wedding in a simple dress, just as quiet as her life rather than as lively as the thoughts racing through her mind. Under the dim wedding lights, her old friends gathered around a table and called out to her with smiles.

What a warm welcome.

At least, it seemed warm—until their thoughts began to show on their faces.

“Emilie! How are you, girls? I didn’t realize how much I missed you until I saw you,” she said excitedly.

Camille, with an insincere smile, said, “Emilie! Is that really you? We thought you had moved to the Alps or something!”

Margaux replied mockingly, “Oh, come on, Camille. I’m sure Emilie is the CEO of some famous company by now.”

Solène, with a sly look beneath her innocent expression, added, “You’re right. When I got married, Emilie was getting her fourth degree. By now, she must have six or seven.”

In a timid, quiet voice, Emilie said, “Actually, I’m still chasing my dreams.”

Her friends exchanged amused glances and giggled.

Camille said, “It’s wonderful that you’re still chasing your dreams. Don’t ever give up! Maybe they’ll come true when you’re seventy. Not everyone can be as successful as we are. You know how it is—everyone becomes something eventually. Some people become nothing.”

She began to laugh mockingly.

Emilie was drowning in her thoughts. She stayed a little longer, careful not to let her inner world show on her face, then quietly and quickly left.

The encounter became the trigger that would change the course of Emilie’s life.

She was feeling sadness, anger, and excitement all at once. She pulled Lena’s card from her bag and called her without wasting another second.

Before Lena even had a chance to speak, Emilie said:

“I’m ready to become ENA.”

Lena contacted her agency and, without wasting any time, prepared a professional audition recording for Ena. Emilie would attend these meetings under her hidden identity.

The agency’s management was interested in the project as well, and they insisted that Emilie’s identity remain completely secret.

She was Ena now.

After the contracts were signed, Ena entered a long and demanding period of training and work. She spent countless hours recording, training in dance and music, and practicing the violin she loved so much. Some days, she barely had time to eat, yet she realized that she loved this intense new life.

For the first time in years, she felt happy. She felt as though she had finally found the way she was meant to live.

Whenever she had time to think, the same question returned to her mind:

Would she ever get the chance to meet the group she admired so much?

That was still a dream.

At last, the moment she had been waiting for arrived.

Ena deserved to see the reward for all the time and effort she had invested. The agency began promoting her and released her music video.

Ena did not appear in the video. Instead, it revealed fragments of her inner world and, from time to time, pieces of her childhood.

Her voice and her song managed to move people.

Now, people were eagerly waiting for her next release. Before long, Ena had built a large fan base. People left comments telling her how much they loved her, how they found pieces of their own lives in her songs, and how deeply her music touched their souls.

Over the course of a year, many of Ena’s songs were released.

Her fans were desperate to meet her.

And now, Ena was about to give her very first live performance.
