Chapter 1

Ring!

The bell for recess rang, and while everyone else rushed toward the cafeteria, I went in the opposite direction.

I headed straight for the security room.

I glanced around the hallway before slipping through the door. Once inside, I locked it behind me and turned around.

My eyes widened.

"Wow."

The room was filled with computers, monitors, cables, security equipment, and enough technology to make any computer enthusiast lose their mind.

My dad would have loved this place.

Unfortunately, I didn't have time to admire it.

I only had five minutes.

I hurried toward the main computer and got to work. My fingers moved quickly across the keyboard as I accessed the school's security system.

Three minutes.

Two minutes.

One minute.

"Done."

I leaned back with a satisfied grin.

I had barely finished when I heard the doorknob turn.

My smile disappeared.

Someone was trying to get inside.

"Seriously?"

I quickly looked around for somewhere to hide.

My eyes landed on a large plant in the corner.

Not exactly the best hiding place, but desperate times called for desperate measures.

I crouched behind it just as the door opened.

Two security guards walked into the room.

I held my breath.

They spoke to each other for a few seconds while I remained completely still.

Then one of them walked toward the door.

My heart hammered against my chest.

Just as he was about to close the door, I reached out, caught it, and slipped through the opening.

I didn't wait to see whether they noticed.

I sprinted down the hallway and headed straight for the bathroom.

Once inside, I locked myself in a stall and finally allowed myself to breathe.

"Okay, Sophie. Calm down."

I pulled out my phone.

The moment I saw the result on the screen, a huge grin spread across my face.

I had done it.

I had successfully hacked into the school's security system.

I couldn't help but laugh quiet.

Oh, right.

I completely forgot to introduce myself.

My name is Sophie Reign.

I'm the daughter of Abel Reign, a multimillionaire and computer genius.

My dad started his successful computer company when he was only twenty-four. He was brilliant, hardworking, and, in my opinion, slightly obsessed with technology.

I guess that's where I got it from.

I didn't grow up with my mother.

When I was younger, my parents separated because my mother wanted a completely different life for her children.

My dad came from a dangerous family. Beneath his respectable image as a businessman and computer programmer was a family history connected to the mafia.

My mother wanted nothing to do with that world.

She was afraid that her children would grow up surrounded by violence and danger. Dad promised her that he would never allow anything to happen to us, but she didn't believe him.

So she left.

She took my twin brother, Hayden, with her and moved to London to continue her nursing career.

I stayed in Italy with Dad.

Years passed and we left Italy for Silicon valley.
