### Chapter One: The Cost of a Soul
The rain in New York didn’t fall; it attacked. It lashed against the floor-to-ceiling windows of the penthouse, blurring the city lights into bleeding streaks of gold and red.
Eira Voss stood barefoot on the Italian marble. The cold bit into her toes, but she didn’t move. She couldn’t. The heavy silk of the white dress she had been forced into felt like a shroud.
Behind her, the door opened. She didn’t have to turn around to know who it was. The air changed when he entered. It grew heavier, thicker, smelling of ozone, expensive black tobacco, and something darkly metallic—like blood dried on a silver blade.
Dacian Moroz. Her husband by contract. Her captor by birthright.
He wasn’t just a billionaire. He was the empire. The underworld bowed to the Moroz name, and Dacian was its crowned, damned prince.
“Turn around, Eira,” his voice washed over her, a low, dark vibration that resonated in her marrow. It wasn’t a request.
She turned.
He was leaning against the mahogany doorframe, his massive frame draped in a tailored black suit that did nothing to hide the lethal lines of his body. His hair was dark, damp from the rain, falling across a forehead marked by a faint, pale scar. But it was his eyes that destroyed her. They were a piercing, Arctic gray—cold to the rest of the world, but when they locked onto her, they burned with a terrifying, suffocating hunger.
He hadn’t touched her yet. Not once. They had been married at the courthouse twelve hours ago, a union forged to pay her father’s ten-million-dollar gambling debt to the Moroz syndicate. Her father had handed her over with a signed deed, a smile, and a one-way ticket to Rio.
Dacian pushed off the doorframe, his movements slow, predatory, as he closed the distance between them. Eira’s breath hitched. Her heart hammered against her ribs like a trapped bird.
“Are you afraid of me?” he asked softly, stopping mere inches from her. The heat radiating off his body was staggering, a stark contrast to the freezing room.
“Yes,” she whispered. It was the truth.
A ghost of a smile touched his lips, but it didn’t reach his eyes. It was a sad smile. A broken smile. “Good,” he murmured. “You should be afraid of what I am. But never, *ever*, be afraid of what I will do to you.”
He reached out, his large, scarred hand wrapping around the nape of her neck. The touch was shockingly gentle, yet the possession in it was absolute. He tilted her head back, forcing her to look up into his sharp face.
“You paid for me,” she breathed, her voice trembling. “I’m just a debt.”
Something dark and violent flashed in his gray eyes. His grip on her neck tightened, just a fraction, grounding her. “Say that again, and I will kneel right here on this floor and beg for your forgiveness,” he said, his voice dropping to a raw, rasping whisper that shocked her to her core. “You are not a debt, Eira. You are the only light in a life I have resigned to hell. And I am a selfish, rotten man because I am going to keep you.”
Before she could process the devastating weight of his words, his mouth came down on hers.
It wasn’t a gentle first kiss. It was a claiming. His lips were hard, demanding, parting hers with a primal urgency that stole the oxygen from her lungs. He tasted of whiskey and dark, unspoken promises. Eira’s hands came up, pushing against his broad chest, but it was like pushing against a mountain.
“Open your mouth for me,” he growled against her lips, a command wrapped in velvet.
She obeyed, a tear slipping down her cheek. The moment her lips parted, his tongue swept in, tangling with hers, stroking her in a way that sent a shocking, electric jolt of heat straight to her belly. He kissed her like he was dying of thirst and she was the only water in a wasteland. He kissed her with a heartbreaking desperation that made the sadness in the room physically ache.
His hands slid down her spine, pulling her flush against him. She could feel the hard, thick ridge of his arousal pressing against her stomach. He was massive, intimidating, and she was entirely untouched. A virgin. A fact her father had proudly negotiated into the contract, selling her purity like a premium asset.
Dacian pulled back, his breathing ragged, his chest heaving. His thumb swiped away the tear on her cheek. He looked at the wetness on his skin with a look of utter torment.
“He sold you,” Dacian whispered, his voice breaking slightly—a crack in the impenetrable armor of the mafia prince. “He sold something priceless. And I... God help me, I bought it.”
He stepped back, shrugging off his suit jacket with fluid, agitated movements. He pulled his black tie over his head and let it drop to the floor. Then, he began unbuttoning his shirt.
Eira watched, frozen, as the stark, terrifyingly beautiful landscape of his chest was revealed. He was carved from marble and scarred from violence. A gunshot wound grazed his left ribs. A knife scar traced down his abdomen. He was a canvas of the underworld, a masterpiece of ruin.
“Come here,” he said softly, sitting on the edge of the massive, dark-wood bed.
Eira’s legs felt like water, but she walked to him. When she was close enough, he reached out, his hands gripping the heavy silk of her white dress. He slowly pulled it down, his knuckles brushing against her collarbone, sending shivers cascading over her skin.
The dress pooled at her feet. She stood before him in nothing but white lace panties, her chest heaving, her body trembling. She felt exposed, vulnerable, but the way Dacian looked at her robbed her of her shame.
His gray eyes darkened to the color of a thunderstorm. He looked at her like she was a deity, and a sinner, all at once. “You are so fucking beautiful,” he breathed, the curse word sounding like a prayer on his lips.
He reached out, his large hands spanning her waist, pulling her between his parted knees. He pressed his forehead against her sternum, his hot breath ghosting over her skin. “I am going to take you tonight, Eira. I am going to ruin you for any other man. I will live inside your skin. But I need you to know... I will die before I let anyone hurt you. Even myself.”
He laid her back on the cool sheets. Eira’s breath caught as he hovered over her, his dark hair falling over his forehead. He unbuttoned his slacks, kicking them off, leaving him in nothing but black boxers that did nothing to hide his imposing size.
“I’ve never...” she whispered, closing her eyes, a flush spreading across her cheeks.
“I know,” he murmured, his lips trailing down her jaw, her neck, finding the hollow of her throat. “I know, little one. Give me your fear. Let me eat it.”
His mouth closed over the heavy swell of her breast. Eira gasped, her back arching off the bed. His tongue was hot and rough, swirling against her sensitive skin before he pulled the peak into his mouth, sucking hard. A sharp, keening cry tore from her throat. The sensation was overwhelming—pleasure and pain mingling in a dizzying rush.
He worshipped her body with a terrifying devotion. His hands roamed her curves, squeezing, possessing, memorizing every inch of her flesh. When his hand slipped between her thighs, cupping the damp heat of her over her lace underwear, she jerked.
“So wet for me,” he groaned against her skin, the vibration sending shocks through her core. He dragged the lace down her legs, tossing it aside.
He looked down at her, completely bare to him. “Spread your legs,” he ordered softly.
Trembling, she obeyed. Dacian’s jaw clenched so hard the muscles leaped beneath his skin. He looked like a man on the verge of losing his mind. He shed his final barrier.
Eira’s eyes widened. He was thick, heavily veined, and jutting out fiercely. The sheer size of him sparked a fresh wave of panic.
“Shh, look at me,” Dacian commanded, climbing over her, caging her head with his arms. His eyes locked onto hers, refusing to let her look away. “Keep your eyes on me, Eira. Only me.”
He reached down, positioning himself at her untouched entrance. The broad head pressed against her, stretching her in a way that burned.
“Take a deep breath,” he whispered, his voice strained, sweat beading on his brow. It was taking everything in his power to hold back.
She inhaled sharply. And then, he pushed forward.
A sharp, agonizing sting tore through her, ripping a cry from her lips. Dacian caught the sound with his mouth, kissing her deeply, swallowing her pain as he buried himself fully inside her with one agonizingly slow, relentless thrust.
He stilled, his body rigid, his muscles shaking with the effort of not moving. He was seated to the hilt, throbbing deep within her, stretching her to the absolute limit.
“God,” he choked out, his eyes squeezed shut. A single tear leaked from the corner of his eye, dropping onto her collarbone. It was a tear of absolute rapture and absolute grief. He knew he had just stolen her innocence, and he hated himself for the dark, euphoric high it gave him.
“The pain will fade,” he promised, his voice rough as gravel. He began to move, pulling out slowly before sinking back in.
It was raw. It was primal. The friction was incredible, a deep, heavy drag that sparked a fire deep in her pelvis. Dacian’s rhythm was slow, deliberate, and devastatingly thorough. He didn’t just have sex with her; he dismantled her. Every thrust was a statement. Every deep, grinding stroke was a brand.
“Mine,” he grunted, his pace increasing, the sound of their skin slapping together echoing in the quiet, rain-swept room. “You are mine, Eira. Say it.”
“I’m yours,” she gasped, her nails digging into his broad shoulders, dragging down his back. The pain had morphed into something blinding, something hot and tight and coiled deep in her stomach.
“Again,” he demanded, his thrusts becoming harder, more desperate, driving the headboard into the wall.
“I’m yours, Dacian! Please—”
He let out a feral groan, reaching down between their bodies to find the swollen bud of her desire. His fingers rubbed rough, tight circles against her, matching the brutal, beautiful rhythm of his hips.
The world shattered.
Eira screamed, her back bowing completely off the bed as an orgasm of violent intensity ripped through her. She clamped down around him so tightly that Dacian roared, a sound of pure, untamed dominance. He drove into her one final, bone-rattling time, burying himself as deep as anatomy would allow, and let go.
He pulsed inside her, hot and thick, flooding her with his warmth, marking her from the inside out. He collapsed against her, his heavy weight pressing her into the mattress, his face buried in the crook of her neck.
For a long time, the only sound in the penthouse was the rain, and their ragged breathing.
Then, Eira felt it. Against her neck, the hot, wet slide of his tears. The most dangerous man in the Western Hemisphere was weeping silently in her arms, holding onto her like she was his only tether to humanity.
He had broken her. And in doing so, he had given her the shattered pieces of his own soul.
This was not a fairy tale. This was a tragedy wrapped in silk and blood. But as Dacian’s arms tightened protectively around her, pulling the thick duvet over her bare shoulders, Eira realized the most terrifying truth of all.
She was already falling in love with her ruin.
AUTHOR’S NOTE
Dear Reader,
Thank you so much for taking a chance on A Beautiful Grief.
Writing Dacian and Eira’s story broke me in the absolute best way. In the dark romance genre, we encounter plenty of monsters, but we rarely get to see them break. I wanted to craft a hero who is unequivocally dangerous—a man capable of burning cities to the ground—yet profoundly aware of his own damnation. Alongside him, I wanted a heroine who doesn’t just survive the darkness, but ultimately learns to rule it.
This book is heavy. It’s sad. It’s bloody. But above all, I hope you felt the pulse of a tragic, beautiful love story. They are flawed and deeply stained, but they found salvation in each other. That is the exact kind of dark romance I live for, and I hope it resonated with you.
If A Beautiful Grief shattered your heart and pieced it back together, the absolute best way to support an indie author is to leave a review on Amazon and Goodreads. It doesn’t have to be a novel—even a quick “I loved this!” helps more than you know by encouraging the algorithm to share the book with readers who crave possessive, tear-jerking mafia romances.
