Summary

(Currently working on the cover) Phoebe Charles never married Preston because she loved him. They were high school kids with a baby on the way, terrified of what would happen if they faced parenthood alone. So they got married. Seven years later, Phoebe is still trying to convince herself that staying is better for their daughter, Bailey. Until Preston’s latest excuse finally comes with a name. After nearly a year of her husband cheating on her, Phoebe files for divorce—and suddenly, the life she spent years holding together begins to fall apart. Between raising Bailey alone, learning how to stand on her own, and leaning on her sister Gabby and Gabby’s boyfriend Wesley Collins, Phoebe is slowly discovering that maybe the life she feared losing was never the life she wanted. Then Wesley’s older brother, Bryce, moves into the city. Bryce is arrogant, irritating, and apparently incapable of going five minutes without getting under Phoebe’s skin. He thinks she’s bossy, uptight, and far too comfortable telling everyone what to do. She thinks he’s an obnoxious smart-ass with terrible manners. Unfortunately, they also think the other is very attractive. As arguments turn into banter, unexpected moments turn into something neither of them can ignore. But Phoebe has spent years mistaking obligation for love—and Bryce has his own reasons for keeping his distance. So what’s the worst that can happen when Bryce suddenly has to crash at her place for a while because his house gets flooded when his pipes burst?

Chapter 1

One month ago

Phoebe sighed as she felt a buzz and saw that Preston texted her.

Preston ❤️:I’ll be late again.

Of course. Because that’s what Preston does. He promises he will be on time. Every single time, he isn’t. But she learned to not be too disappointed.

“Mama!”

Phoebe looks down and sees her daughter Bailey clinging onto her pant leg.

“Where is daddy?”

Probably out drinking again.

“He is working late beebee.”

“But mama he promised to get me a cake from the store! My birthday is tomorrow, does he know that?“

Of course he does. He just always seems to forget.

“I bet he does, he is just very busy.”

Gods, phoebe was so exhausted.

She had gotten no sleep the previous night, because unfortunately those insomnia pills her doctor prescribed decided not to work.

And of course, Preston was never there when she needed him. But it should have been expected, considering he got her pregnant in highschool and married her only so his parents wouldn’t be mad.

Why would his parents be so mad you ask? His parents are religious. To a point it’s insane.

Gods it’s also so overwhelming. She can’t go one day without them trying to force it on her.

She honestly couldn’t give a damn about religion right now. Though she believed there was something out here, it doesn’t mean it is only one god.

“Mama are you listening?” Bailey whined.

“Yes beebee, of course.”

Buzz.

Phoebe glances at her phone.

Preston ❤️ : I can’t get the cake tonight. You will have to get it yourself tomorrow.

She let out a groan of frustration. He never stops dissapointing her. Bailey is just to young to understand and Phoebe is running out of excuses every time her father is late.

Another buzz.

Preston ❤️: I’m spending the night at Nate’s. That way we can both work late, and have less work tomorrow.

She almost threw her phone at the wall.

She looks down at Bailey, and lets out a long exhale.

“Hey Bailey, I need to go on a small errand, want to go to gammys?”

“Gammy!” She squeals.

Gammy was Phoebe’s sister, Gabby. Bailey couldn’t pronounce gabby so she said Gammy, and it just stuck.

She gently picks up Bailey and places her on a stool so she can put on her daughters sneakers.

Once she does, she lets Bailey get off the stool because she very clearly stated she wants to be a big girl and get off herself.

“I did it!”

“Yes you did beebee, now it’s time for your jacket.”

Phoebe eventually was able to put it on her, and go to the garage and get Bailey in her car seat. Then they headed their way to gabby’s.

Once they got there, bailey ran inside and went to go see Gabby’s boyfriend, Wesley.

It didn’t help that Gabby was not surprised when phoebe stepped into the house and told her Preston wasnt able to get the cake so she had too.

“You need to divorce him Phoebe. You aren’t happy, and damn sure aren’t in love.”

Aint that the truth.

“I know. Eventually i will, but bailey needs a father in her life.”

“Preston is barely in her life at all Phoebe.”

She used her older sister tone. Phoebe hated that tone. It was the same tone their mom used to give them a firm talking too whenever they messed up badly.

“Oh I know. But it is better than not being there at all.”

Gabby pressed her lips together, and gave phoebe a look.

“Seriously Pheebs?”

Goddamnit. She knew Gabby was right. But she didnt want to admit she was scared of divorcing him. She doesnt know why, but she just can’t. She can’t bring up the courage.

Eventually she did once preston came home one night with the smell of another womens perfume and hickeys all over his neck. She didnt mind that he found someone else, they didnt really love each other after all, but she was worried about bailey.
