Chapter 1 - The Light Beneath the Lake
In the kingdom of Avelora, everyone was born with a shadow.
Not the ordinary kind that followed you beneath the sun.
These shadows were magical.
Some people could make their shadows move independently. Others could use them to create fire, heal small wounds, speak to animals, or see things that were hidden from ordinary eyes.
But there was one rule everyone in Avelora knew:
Never wake the light beneath the lake.
Sixteen-year-old Elara Vale had heard that warning since she was little.
She had also spent her entire life wondering why.
One evening, while returning home through the forest, Elara noticed something strange.
The moon was reflected on the surface of Lake Neris.
But the reflection was wrong.
The moon in the sky was silver.
The moon in the lake was gold.
Elara stopped walking.
Her shadow stretched across the ground.
Then it moved.
“Elara.”
She froze.
Someone had whispered her name.
She looked around, but the forest was empty.
“Who’s there?”
No answer.
Then the golden moon beneath the water began to glow.
A thin line of light appeared in the middle of the lake.
Elara stepped closer.
Her shadow suddenly pulled away from her feet.
She gasped.
The shadow ran across the ground and stopped at the edge of the water.
A symbol appeared on its chest—a golden circle surrounded by seven tiny stars.
Elara had never seen the symbol before.
But somehow, she knew what it meant.
The Dawn has chosen.
The lake exploded with light.
Elara stumbled backward.
Something rose from the water.
It was a small creature with silver wings and eyes that shone like stars. It landed gently on a stone in front of her.
“Aster,” it said.
Elara stared.
“You can talk?”
The creature tilted its head.
“So can you.”
Before Elara could respond, the forest became completely silent.
Even the insects stopped making noise.
Then came the sound of footsteps.
Someone was approaching.
Aster’s expression changed.
“They found you.”
“Who?”
“The King’s Hunters.”
Elara’s heart began to race.
Everyone knew about the King’s Hunters.
They were soldiers sent throughout Avelora to find anyone connected to forbidden magic.
“But I haven’t done anything!”
Aster flew toward her.
“You haven’t.”
It looked toward the dark forest.
“Not yet.”
A group of figures appeared between the trees.
Their armor was black.
At the center stood a tall woman carrying a sword made of dark crystal.
She looked directly at Elara.
“The girl by the lake,” she said.
The soldiers raised their weapons.
“Take her alive.”
Elara stepped backward.
Aster landed on her shoulder.
“What do I do?”
The creature whispered:
“Run.”
Elara turned.
But there was nowhere to go.
The soldiers were behind her.
The lake was in front of her.
Then she remembered the golden light beneath the water.
She looked down.
The lake was glowing again.
Aster whispered three words:
“Trust the light.”
Elara took a breath.
And stepped into the lake.
The water swallowed her.
The soldiers shouted.
The golden light became brighter and brighter until the entire forest disappeared.
And beneath the surface of Lake Neris, Elara opened her eyes.
She was not drowning.
She was standing on a staircase made entirely of light.
It descended into darkness.
At the bottom stood an enormous golden door.
Seven stars were carved into it.
Elara reached toward the door.
The moment her fingers touched it, a voice echoed through the darkness.
“At last, the Dawn-bearer has returned.”
The door opened.
And somewhere far beneath the kingdom of Avelora...
something ancient woke up.
To be continued...
