NO ESTÁS IMAGINÁNDOLO A los ocho años, Rowan Kuznetov encontró una habitación que nunca debió abrir. Prólogo–Aquella noche...

La mansión Kuznetov nunca dormía.

Aunque todos sus habitantes estuvieran en sus habitaciones, aunque los pasillos permanecieran a oscuras y las enormes ventanas reflejaran únicamente la noche, siempre había algo que parecía mantenerse despierto.

Rowan lo sabía.

Tenía ocho años y todavía no encontraba una explicación para aquella sensación.

Aquella noche tampoco podía dormir.

Se encontraba sentado en el borde de su cama, abrazando una almohada mientras miraba fijamente la puerta de su habitación. El reloj marcaba poco después de la medianoche.

Tenía sed.

Eso era todo.

O al menos eso creyó.

Salió de su habitación y comenzó a caminar hacia las escaleras. Sus pequeños pasos resonaban suavemente sobre el suelo de mármol.

Entonces escuchó algo.

Un susurro.

Rowan se detuvo.

Miró hacia ambos lados.

Nada.

Pensó que quizá había sido el viento.

Continuó caminando.

Otro susurro.

Esta vez parecía venir del final del pasillo.

Rowan levantó la mirada.

Allí estaba aquella puerta.

La había visto cientos de veces.

Siempre cerrada.

Siempre con un pesado candado.

Sus padres nunca le habían explicado qué había detrás. Cuando preguntaba, simplemente le decían que no debía acercarse.

Pero aquella noche había algo diferente.

Rowan escuchó voces.

No podía distinguir las palabras.

Se acercó lentamente.

Un paso.

Otro.

Hasta quedar frente a la puerta.

Apoyó el oído contra la madera.

Los susurros se hicieron más claros.

No parecían venir de una habitación vacía.

Parecían estar esperando.

Rowan retrocedió un poco.

¿Hola...?

Silencio.

Entonces ocurrió.

El candado cayó al suelo.

Rowan se quedó inmóvil.

La puerta comenzó a abrirse lentamente.

Detrás no había monstruos.

No había nada extraño.

Era solamente una oficina.

Un escritorio antiguo. Estanterías repletas de libros. Una enorme ventana cubierta por la oscuridad de la noche.

Y una vitrina.

Rowan entró.

Sus ojos recorrieron los objetos que descansaban detrás del cristal.

Había frascos, pequeñas cajas, objetos metálicos y libros con símbolos que él no comprendía.

Pero entonces vio algo.

Un collar.

La joya que colgaba de él reflejó la luz de la luna.

Era hermosa.

Demasiado hermosa.

Rowan se acercó a la vitrina.

No sabía por qué quería tocarlo.

Solo sabía que quería hacerlo.

Abrió la puerta de cristal.

Tomó el collar entre sus dedos.

Durante un instante, no ocurrió nada.

Entonces escuchó una voz detrás de él.

Una voz que no parecía pertenecer a nadie dentro de aquella casa.

Por fin.

Rowan se giró.

No había nadie.

Solo una sombra.

Una sombra que no debería estar allí.

Y cuando volvió a mirar el collar, la joya parecía estar latiendo suavemente entre sus manos.

Aquella fue la última noche en que Rowan Kuznetov creyó que su vida era normal.

Porque desde ese momento...

Algo comenzó a seguirlo.
