THE VOICE BEYOND THE DOOR Chapter 26
The voice beyond the ancient black door begs the siblings not to leave.
Beatrice, Nathaniel, and Elias struggle with whether they can trust what they hear. Nathaniel warns them that the chamber has already shown them that appearances can be deceiving, while Elias notices something unsettling about the voice.
When Beatrice approaches the rose-shaped indentation in the door, the stone reacts to her presence.
For a brief moment, the door reveals a memory of someone being imprisoned beyond it long ago.
But the vision raises a disturbing possibility.
The person behind the door may not be the prisoner.
They may have been the one meant to keep something else trapped.
When the door finally opens, the siblings discover a small chamber containing an ancient chair, a broken chain, and a rose carved into the floor.
There is no one inside.
Then they hear breathing behind them.
