A ROSE FOR DOLLY

A Special Tribute to Dolly Parton

August 25, 2026

Some people leave footprints behind them.

Some leave songs.

Some leave stories.

And some leave a little bit of light wherever they have been.

Dolly Parton was one of those people.

She came from humble beginnings in the Tennessee mountains and somehow turned a childhood filled with hardship, family, faith, imagination, and dreams into a lifetime of music, laughter, storytelling, generosity, and hope.

She became a voice known around the world.

But perhaps the most remarkable thing about Dolly was that even after reaching extraordinary heights, she never seemed to forget where she came from.

She carried home with her.

She carried family with her.

She carried the stories of ordinary people with her.

And she carried those stories into songs that became part of the lives of millions.

Today, the world has lost an extraordinary woman.

But the world has not lost what she gave us.

Because songs remain.

Stories remain.

Kindness remains.

Dreams remain.

And somewhere, every time one of her songs begins playing, Dolly will be there again.

Not physically.

But in the only way storytellers ever truly disappear—

which is to say, they don't.

Their voices continue through the people who heard them.

Their stories continue through the people who tell them.

Their kindness continues through the people who were inspired by it.

And their light continues through every person who decides to pass a little of it forward.

So today, Raven would like to leave a rose.

Not a rose of sorrow alone.

A rose of gratitude.

For the songs.

For the stories.

For the laughter.

For the courage.

For the generosity.

For the children who were given books because Dolly believed every child deserved the chance to discover a story.

For the people who found comfort in her music.

For the people who found courage in her example.

For the generations who grew up with Dolly Parton somewhere in the soundtrack of their lives.

And for every writer, musician, dreamer, and storyteller who learned that you don't have to come from somewhere grand to create something extraordinary.

Sometimes you simply need a dream.

And the courage to follow it.

THE STORYTELLER'S ROSE

There once was a girl from the mountains who dreamed in melodies.

She didn't have everything.

But she had a voice.

She had stories.

She had determination.

And she had a heart big enough to imagine that perhaps the little things mattered.

A family song mattered.

A childhood memory mattered.

A broken heart mattered.

A dream mattered.

A child holding a book mattered.

A stranger needing a little hope mattered.

And she spent her life proving that they did.

She turned memories into melodies.

Heartbreak into art.

Humor into joy.

Success into generosity.

And dreams into doors for other people.

That may be one of the greatest gifts an artist can leave behind.

Not simply saying, "Look what I made."

But saying,

"Come on.

There's room for you here, too."

A SONG FOR DOLLY

“Where the Mountain Roses Grow”

An original tribute created for Dolly Parton

There was a little light in a mountain home,

Where a young girl learned to dream,

With a song in her heart and a world outside,

That was bigger than it seemed.

She carried those dreams down every road,

Through the laughter and the rain,

And every time she opened up her heart,

Someone found a little strength again.

So let the mountain roses grow,

Let the old songs carry on,

Let every child who finds a dream

Believe that they belong.

Let the laughter fill the valleys,

Let the stories cross the sky,

For some lights don't disappear

When the person says goodbye.

She sang about the broken hearts,

She sang about the poor,

She sang about the little things

That people sometimes overlook.

And somewhere there is a child tonight

Turning pages by a light,

Because somebody believed a story

Could make a person's world feel right.

So let the mountain roses grow,

Let their petals catch the sun,

Let every dreamer find the courage

To become what they've begun.

And when another voice begins to sing,

May a little Dolly shine through,

Not because they try to be her—

But because she taught them what a kind heart can do.

So rest among the mountain roses,

Where the evening shadows fall,

Your songs became a thousand memories,

And your kindness touched us all.

The world may say goodbye today,

But storytellers leave a way—

And every time we tell the story,

A little bit of you will stay.

A NOTE FROM ONE STORYTELLER TO ANOTHER

Dear Dolly,

I never knew you.

I never sat across from you.

I never had the opportunity to tell you what your work meant to me.

But I am a writer.

And I understand something about storytellers.

We leave pieces of ourselves behind.

Sometimes we put them into pages.

Sometimes into songs.

Sometimes into characters.

Sometimes into a sentence that we hope will make someone feel less alone.

You did that with music.

You did it with stories.

You did it with laughter.

And you did it with generosity.

You showed the world that being successful didn't mean you had to stop remembering the people who helped you get there.

You showed people that glamour and kindness could exist in the same person.

That humor could stand beside heartbreak.

That ambition didn't have to erase humility.

And that giving something away could sometimes be more meaningful than keeping it.

So from one storyteller to another—

thank you.

Thank you for the stories.

Thank you for the songs.

Thank you for the laughter.

Thank you for reminding dreamers that where they begin does not have to determine where they end.

And thank you for leaving the world a little brighter than you found it.

Rest peacefully, Dolly.

The songs will continue.

The stories will continue.

The books will continue.

The dreams will continue.

And somewhere, another little girl or boy will pick up a pencil, a microphone, a paintbrush, or a blank page and decide to create something beautiful.

Perhaps they'll never know exactly where that courage came from.

But we'll know.

A little light from the mountain will still be shining.

FOR THE READERS

What Dolly Parton song holds a special place in your heart?

Was it a song that made you cry?

A song that made you laugh?

A song you listened to with someone you loved?

A song that helped you through something?

Or perhaps one of her stories, movies, books, performances, or acts of kindness stayed with you.

Share your memory.

Because today isn't only about saying goodbye.

It's also about remembering.

And sometimes remembering someone is the most beautiful way of keeping a light alive.

THE FINAL ROSE

Tonight, let there be music.

Let there be laughter.

Let there be stories.

Let there be an open book somewhere.

Let a child discover the joy of reading.

Let a dreamer believe they can become something more.

Let someone who is hurting find a little comfort.

And let one small act of kindness travel farther than anyone expects.

Because perhaps that is the greatest memorial we can give Dolly Parton.

Not simply to remember what she did.

But to continue what she taught us.

Be kind.

Dream big.

Remember where you came from.

Tell your story.

Help somebody else find their way.

And never be ashamed of the little light you carry.

Because sometimes…

a little light becomes a song.

A song becomes a story.

A story becomes a memory.

And a memory becomes forever.
