Chapter 1 just five seconds
Every story has a moment that almost went unseen.
There were a lot of students in the class.
Enough that you could spend an entire evening there and still not know everyone's name.
The classroom was usually loud before the teacher arrived. Bags were dropped onto benches, notebooks were pulled out at the last second, and conversations came from every direction.
Some students were already studying.
Some were pretending to study.
And some had apparently decided that the few minutes before class were the perfect time to discuss everything except studying.
She usually sat toward the front.
Not because she was trying to impress anyone.
She just liked being able to see the board clearly.
The front benches were quieter, easier to concentrate on, and far away from most of the chaos at the back.
The boys, meanwhile, had their own territory.
The last benches.
That was where the laughter usually came from.
She knew him mostly because of that.
Not because they were friends.
Not because they talked.Just because he was one of the people who was almost always somewhere around the last bench, surrounded by his friends. Most days that was enough she never expected to know him beyond that.Sometimes she hears his laugh before she even sees him, other times she catches him answering the teachers question with surprising confidence.. he wasn't the loudest person in the class he just had a way of making his presence known without even trying. Not yet.The next morning, she arrived earlier than usual. The classroom was almost empty.A few chairs were still pushed against the desks, and the sunlight coming through the windows made the room look completely different from how it usually did.Quiet.Almost peaceful.
She put her bag down and sat in her usual place.
For once, there was no noise from the back benches. No laughter. No shouting. No one arguing over a seat. She opened her notebook. Then she heard footsteps outside the classroom. She looked up.He walked in with one of his friends.
He was talking about something, but stopped when he noticed that the classroom was almost empty. His eyes moved across the room. For a second, they met hers. She looked down at her notebook. She wasn't sure why she did that.Maybe because she suddenly felt awkward.Maybe because she didn't want him to think she had been looking at him. His friend said something.
He laughed. Then they walked toward the back. She continued writing.A few minutes later, more students began arriving.
The classroom slowly filled up again. The noise returned.
The ordinary morning returned. And the moment disappeared.
Or at least, she thought it did.At lunch, her friend sat beside her."You're unusually quiet today.""I'm always quiet."
"No, you're not."She smiled."Okay. Maybe a little."Her friend looked at her suspiciously.
"What?"
"Nothing."
"You're definitely thinking about something."
"I'm not."
"Then why are you smiling?" She immediately stopped smiling.
"I wasn't."
Her friend laughed.
"Sure."
She shook her head and opened her lunch. There were some things you didn't explain.Especially when you weren't even sure what they meant yourself. After lunch, everyone returned to class. The teacher hadn't arrived yet.The room was louder than usual.Someone was throwing a paper ball.Someone else was trying to catch it.She was copying something from her friend's notebook when a shadow fell across her desk. She looked up.It was him.He held a notebook in one hand.
"Do you have a pen?"
She blinked.
"Yeah."
She searched through her pencil case and handed him one.
"Thanks."
He took it.
Then he walked away. She watched him for half a second. Then she looked back at her notebook. Her friend was staring at her.
"What?"
Her friend smiled.
"Nothing."
She narrowed her eyes.
"Don't."
"I didn't say anything."
"You were about to."
Her friend laughed. The teacher walked into the classroom.
Everyone quickly returned to their seats. She tried to concentrate on the lesson. But this time, she couldn't help noticing one small thing. The pen she'd given him was still in his hand. And somehow, that made her smile. The pen stayed in his hand for the rest of the lesson.
She tried not to notice.
She really did.
But every now and then, her eyes moved toward the back of the classroom without her permission.
He was sitting with his friends, listening to the teacher while occasionally spinning the pen between his fingers.
Her pen.
It was such a small thing.
It shouldn't have mattered.
And yet, for some reason, she kept thinking about it.
When the bell finally rang, everyone immediately started packing their bags.
The classroom filled with noise again.
Chairs scraped against the floor.
Books were shoved into bags.
Someone near the window was already talking about what they were going to do after school.
She closed her notebook and put it into her bag.
Then she remembered the pen.
She looked toward the back.
He was still there.
His friends had already left, but he was taking his time.
She stood up.
Before she could say anything, he walked toward her.
He held out the pen.
"Here."
She took it.
"Thanks."
He smiled slightly.
"Sorry. I forgot I had it."
"It's okay."
There was a pause.
Neither of them said anything.
Then he nodded and walked away.
She watched him leave the classroom.
Five seconds.
Maybe less.
Again.
She looked down at the pen in her hand.
It was the same pen she'd been using all week.
Nothing special.
Nothing different.
But somehow, the ordinary things were starting to feel different.
The next morning, she didn't expect anything.
She arrived at school, went to class, put her bag down, and opened her notebook.Everything was normal.Until someone pulled out the chair beside her.She looked up.It was her friend.
"Move."
She smiled and moved her books. Her friend sat down.
"You finished the homework?"
"Almost."
"Almost?"
"I forgot one question."
"You always forget one question."
"I know."
They both laughed. The classroom slowly filled.More students arrived. The teacher entered. The lesson began. For the first twenty minutes, she was completely focused. Then a small piece of paper landed on her desk. She stared at it.She looked around.Nobody seemed to be watching. She unfolded it.
There were only three words written on it.
“Do you understand?”
She frowned. She looked toward the back.He was looking at the board. She looked at the paper again.Maybe it wasn't from him.Maybe someone else had written it.She didn't know.So she turned around slightly and looked toward her friend. Her friend shook her head. She hadn't done it.She looked back. The teacher was still explaining the lesson. She picked up her pencil and wrote underneath the question:Not really. She folded the paper. Then she hesitated. She didn't know who to give it to. few seconds later, a hand appeared beside her desk. She placed the paper in it.The hand disappeared. She didn't look back. Her heart was beating slightly faster than before.A minute later, the paper came back. She opened it beneath her notebook. There was another sentence.Me neither. She almost laughed. She covered her mouth with her hand. Her friend looked at her.
"What?"
"Nothing."
"You keep saying that."
"I know."
She smiled and looked down at the paper again.
For the rest of the lesson, they passed the tiny piece of paper back and forth.
Nothing important was written on it.Mostly jokes.A complaint about the lesson.A question about homework. One badly drawn picture that made her laugh so quietly she almost got caught.
It was ridiculous. And somehow, it was fun. When the bell rang, the paper disappeared into her notebook. She didn't throw it away. She wasn't sure why.She looked down at the pen in her hand again. It was the same pen she'd been using all week, yet somehow it suddenly felt important.
“Are you coming?”
She looked up. Her friend was standing beside the desk, waiting for her.
“Yeah. Give me a second.”
She quickly put the pen into her pencil case and picked up her bag.
Her friend glanced toward the back of the classroom before looking at her again.
“Why are you smiling?”
“I’m not.”
“You definitely are.”
She shook her head and walked toward the door.
“Come on. We’re going to be late.”
Her friend laughed and followed her.
