100 year old house

There was a little old house just out past the river that I wanted to see dearly. There was nobody living in it but Mama would never let me cross that river without my brother. I have asked him to come with me before but he was never the adventurous kind. He would always say that there were probably snakes and skunks in there. He would always try to scare me out of things.

I suppose I should tell you about my family. My Papa is 42 and Mama 38. My oldest siblings are Penny and Rosanna, Penny is older and 20, Rosanna is only 17 and has a newborn. Penny has a child but he is only 3 and he is crazy. I’m so happy that I'm an auntie already. My brother Hugo is 16 and I am 10 years old. My birthday will be here in 14 weeks and I’m so excited to be 11.

I wish Rosanna was here because she would take me across the river to see that house. She was always adventurous. She showed me how to build a treehouse. I have tried it myself many times but I will never be as good as her. 

I remember she always said I was her favorite. To be honest she was my favorite too.

At her wedding she let me be her maid of honor instead of her best friend! I was shocked at that news when she told me.

Ok back on topic. I wanna go over to that house super badly, I'm going to ask Papa but for now I'm going to make a plan if he says no. First things first, I am NOT going at night. That is the creepiest thing ever.

So I will have to do it at midday, so mama will call me in for lunch and after I will grab the rowboat and go. I can only be gone for like 10 minutes or else Mama will catch me.

I just asked Papa and I am furious! He said to my face that little girls should not be outside, but that little girls should be inside helping their mothers. One thing for sure is that he is wrong and Mama would ask for my help if she needed it. My only hope now is to ask Mama or Hugo or I will go on with my little plan.

I asked Mama and she said the same thing that she always says about going to the house and said that I need Hugo to come with me. Then I asked Hugo, He said He will go with me! I ran over to the rowboat to grab it and then we were off. Hugo told me to stop shaking and move the boat or I can swim over because he doesn’t want to get wet. But how can you control your happiness!

As we crossed the river we saw salmon swimming under us. It was so cool. I told Hugo we should be going across the river more often. He just smiled and agreed with me. We saw bush bunnies nibbling on a saskatoon bush. As we got closer to the house, I noticed that the windows were all fine and the door was perfect. So the only things that were in there were ants and mice. Mama was terrified of mice and chased it around the house with a broom and papa would have to run to the barn and catch one of the barn cats.

Now Mama has a house cat named Mouser. I told Papa it was a silly name but he didn’t care. Mouser loves me or at least my bed. Every night he comes and cuddles with me.

We are at the front step of the door of the old house. It was a one story house, so no upstairs or downstairs. Hugo and I entered the house and saw a beautiful kitchen with cast Iron pots and pans.

There was a table with four chairs, four bedrooms with beds but no mattresses, blankets or pillows.

There was a fireplace but no wood stacked up by it. They looked in the cellar but nothing was down there.

She looked in all of the cupboards and nothing was in there. Hugo said that in the old days, people would just pick up their things and leave. They would do that so everyone had a house. You just had to find an empty one.

She spotted an old broom in the corner of the house and started sweeping. She told Hugo to go outside and pick a stick and start serving the cobwebs. Sarah was ready to move out and live in the old house as Sarah started sweeping the bedrooms and she noticed a small book under the bed. 

She opened the book and read the first page and noticed the year on the top corner. The time that it was now was 1853 but the diary said the day it was wrought was 1748. On the first page it sayed “ Today we just moved into a new house and that was just finished this week. This house smells fresh and like oak and pine. Tato says that the house will not last long because the people that built the house did not let the wood dry long enough”.

Sarah called out to her brother and he came running into the bedroom and asked what was wrong. She said “Look, I found a Dairy dating back to the 1700’s! Read the first page.” Hugo read it and said “look there's a name, Marcinku Robertson ''. “Wait” said Sarah, “ There's a girl named Clara Robertson in my class, we can ask her if she knows anyone with this name” They both ran outside to the rowboat and started rowing back to their house. 

“Mama! Papa!” said Sarah bursting into the house. “We found a dairy and we saw the house was too cool!”

Papa shushed Sarah “Be Quiet, Your Mama is Sick, if you children were here you could have helped her faster” Sarah Stood up walked over to the kettle and filled it with water and placed it on the stop.

                                         She grabbed a cup and placed 5 different herbs in the cup         

and grabbed the kettle and prodded the water in the cup and picked up the cup and sat up. Sarah had helped her Mama drink the Tea. Her Mama sat up and finished the Tea and stood up and finished baking bread. Sarah walked over to her Papa and said “ We were right on time” and walked up the stairs to her room and sat on the floor to read the diary she found.

As she was reading and flipped through the pages Sarah saw a dried flower drop from a page. She held the page as she looked at Sweet William. Then read “ I went to a Ball today. I was sitting on the bench as I heard a voice, and I was a soft but silent voice. I looked at the 18 year old boy as he asked to dance with me, we ended up spending the whole night together chatting. But when it was time to go,  He give me this sweet william. I  asked for his name and It was John. He asked for my name and age. I said 16 and Marcinku, He smiled as he left and blew me a kiss.”

 “Ew” said Sarah allowed “ I hope I never fall in love”  

Hugo said “What are you Reading, A romance?”. Sarah Blurted out “She was your age and dated an 18 year old!” Hugo laughed and said that people dated people that were much older than each other. Sarah said that she hoped that Hugo never falls in love. Hugo laughed again and said that was too late, because he was already in love. Sarah said that he should stop growing up.
