Chapter 1
A century ago, the trajectory of human history was permanently altered by a single, miraculous anomaly. It happened in a high-security research facility nestled deep within the Japanese Alps—a facility attempting to harness raw, subatomic energy. When containment failed, the resulting blast should have unleashed a thermal shockwave capable of tearing through the atmosphere, igniting the air, and causing a global extinction-level catastrophe.
Instead, the unstable core did not detonate in a traditional firestorm. It underwent a instantaneous molecular shift, converting vast amounts of localized mass into an eerie, iridescent gas that swept across the globe in a matter of hours. The haze was completely non-toxic, odorless, and absorbed into the atmosphere without a trace of environmental destruction. But as the world held its breath, expecting the end, the biological consequences began to manifest.
The gas was a hyper-mutagen, altering human DNA on an individualized quantum level. It didn’t rewrite humanity uniformly; it unlocked chaotic, unpredictable abilities dictated by microscopic variances in each person’s genetic code. For some, the mutations were delightfully mundane—the capacity to grow one’s fingernails at will, change hair pigmentation based on mood, or emit mild electrical static from their fingertips. For others, the transformation yielded catastrophic, godlike potential. A rare fraction of the population found themselves capable of manipulating kinetic energy, altering local gravity, or lifting upward of eight hundred tons with their bare hands.
With the dawn of this extraordinary new era came the collapse of traditional societal structures. Humanity splintered into those who sought to maintain peace and those who embraced absolute power. Out of that chaos emerged the Meta Men: individuals who abandoned their humanity to use their terrifying gifts for subjugation, destruction, and personal gain.
Against this looming shadow stood three young, aspiring heroes who shared a singular, unshakable dream—to bring down the Meta Men once and for all.
Chase Nakano, a young man defined by a brooding silence and a cold, hyper-focused demeanor, wielded a lethal and versatile gift: the ability to generate an infinite supply of specialized throwing knives out of thin air. Upon thrown impact, Chase could either command the daggers to detonate in a localized kinetic burst or instantly teleport his body to the precise location of the blade in mid-flight.
Ten years prior, the Nakano household was filled with laughter, energy, and an overwhelming sense of light. Young Chase was upbeat, relentlessly extroverted, and practically bursting with joy. On a crisp autumn afternoon, seven-year-old Chase was racing around the living room, tossing plastic action figures into the air and attempting to manifest his newly emerging energy blades with eager, uncoordinated shouts.
The front door clicked open, and Hans Nakano stepped inside. Broad-shouldered, warm-eyed, and towering with an imposing presence, Hans was one of the nation’s premier heroes, possessing the legendary gift of raw super-strength. He unbuttoned his coat, exhaling a weary breath that instantly melted into a warm smile as his son bounded across the hallway.
“Dad! You’re back!” Chase shouted, sliding across the polished hardwood floor and wrapping his arms around his father’s waist. “Did you beat them? Did you take down the Meta Men?”
Hans chuckled heartily, lifting Chase effortlessly onto his shoulder with one arm. “We secured the perimeter and brought them in, kiddo. All in a day’s work.”
“Take me with you next time!” Chase pleaded, his eyes glowing with excitement as he hovered a tiny, shimmering kinetic dagger in his palm. “Look! I can hold it stable for five whole seconds now! I’m ready to fight bad guys with you!”
Hans set his son down gently, kneeling so he was eye-to-eye with the boy. His expression softened into a look of grounded affection. “No can do, champ. Being out there isn’t a game. You’ve got a powerful gift, Chase, but power without absolute control is dangerous. You need to focus on your training and master your abilities before you even think about step-by-step action.”
“Aww, man...” Chase pouted, dropping his shoulders dramatically, though his energetic smile returned almost instantly.
A soft breeze swept through the open balcony doors upstairs, accompanied by the gentle sound of rustling wind chimes. A moment later, Freda Nakano descended from above, hovering down gracefully before resting her feet on the rug. Possessing the gift of absolute flight, Freda was as radiant as she was fierce. She carried a brown paper bag filled with fresh spices and rare herbs.
“I had to fly all the way to a small market in Tuscany just to find the right basil for tonight’s sauce,” Freda said, kissing Chase on the top of his head before tossing a playful look toward her husband. “And speaking of needing control—Hans, you smell like singed asphalt and soot. Go shower before dinner is served.”
“Yes, ma’am,” Hans grinned, holding up his hands in mock surrender as he headed up the stairs.
Dinner that evening was a lively affair. The dining table was overflowing with fresh pasta, warm bread, and endless chatter. Young Chase spent half the meal making silly faces, using his telepathic knife generation to balance garlic bread on the flat of a floating blade until Freda gently swatted it out of the air with a laugh. Hans recounted lighthearted stories from his early days of training, his booming laugh filling every corner of the cozy home. It was a home built on absolute love, safety, and unwavering joy.
After the plates were cleared, the family gathered in the living room for their weekend tradition: a competitive board game spread across the rug. Chase was in the middle of a triumphant victory dance, having just taken the lead, while Hans and Freda laughed hysterically at their son’s over-the-top celebrations.
Knock. Knock. Knock.
The sudden sound echoed sharply through the quiet house.
Hans paused, his smile fading slightly into a look of mild curiosity. He glanced at the clock on the wall—it was well past nine at night. Freda looked up from the board, exchanging a quick, subtle glance with her husband.
“Expecting anyone?” Freda asked softly.
“No,” Hans replied, standing up slowly and rolling his shoulders back. “Stay with Chase. I’ll see who it is.”
Freda walked past Hans toward the front entrance, placing a reassuring hand on her husband’s arm as she passed. “I’ve got it, honey. It’s probably just the courier with the updated training schedules.”
She opened the heavy oak front door, but before she could even utter a greeting, a shadow blurred across the threshold. A masked figure draped in a dark yellow cape, sporting eyes that burned with a harsh, luminous yellow light, lunged forward. With terrifying, fluid velocity, the intruder slammed Freda backward into the foyer wall, the structural impact cracking the plaster behind her.
Hans sprang into motion instantly, his jaw set in a hard line as his muscle tone shifted, activating his super-strength. “Chase! Get to your room now!” Hans barked, his voice leaving zero room for debate.
Young Chase turned and bolted toward the hallway, his heart hammering against his ribs like a trapped bird. But as he reached the bottom of the grand staircase, an overwhelming wave of terror locked his knees in place. He couldn’t just leave. He turned back, pressing himself against the banister to watch.
The intruder’s glowing yellow eyes flashed intensely as they locked onto Hans for a split second. Then, without a word, the figure lashed out toward Freda before she could even catch her breath or take flight, ending her life in a single, cold, decisive movement.
Chase slapped both hands over his mouth, suppressing a shriek of pure horror as tears instantly flooded his vision.
“NO!” Hans roared, a sound of unbridled anguish and fury shaking the very foundation of the house.
Hans charged, bringing down a fist packed with enough raw physical force to level a concrete fortress. But the masked intruder didn’t even flinch. Moving with a terrifying combination of unnatural strength and speed, the attacker met Hans’s blow mid-air, absorbing the kinetic force and deflecting it effortlessly.
The battle was short and merciless. Hans fought with everything he had, tearing through the furniture and floorboards, but the intruder moved with an eerie efficiency, countering every strike with overwhelming power. Within moments, the towering hero collapsed to the ground, static and lifeless beside his wife.
Panic completely overwrote Chase’s shock. He turned and scrambled up the stairs on all fours, scrambling frantically into his bedroom. He dove under the metal frame of his bed, pressing his forehead against the carpet, pulling his knees up to his chest, and praying his jagged breaths wouldn’t betray him.
A second later, the heavy wooden door of his bedroom violently shattered inward, splinters showering the room.
Slow, deliberate footsteps echoed across the floorboards. The yellow cape brushed against the edge of the bedframe as the intruder circled the room, kicking open closet doors, tearing down curtains, and peering into the shadows. Chase squeezed his eyes shut, holding his breath until his lungs burned, refusing to let even a faint whisper escape his lips.
After what felt like an eternity of agonizing suspense, the heavy footsteps turned toward the doorway and faded down the hall.
A quiet beat passed. Then another.
Chase finally let out a long, shuddering sigh of relief, his small shoulders dropping as he thought the nightmare was over.
Suddenly, two dark, phase-shifting hands burst through the solid wooden floorboards directly beneath the bed.
Before Chase could even scream, the hands clamped onto his ankles and pulled him straight down, dragging him back through the structure of the house and dropping him hard onto the cold, ruined tile of the downstairs living room floor.
Chase crashed onto his back, gasping for air as a sharp, blinding pain shot through his abdomen. He clutched his stomach, looking up in sheer terror as the masked figure loomed above him, raising a single, heavy boot to pin the young boy to the floor.
The intruder raised a hand, gathering a shimmering aura of destructive energy, preparing to deliver the final strike to end the Nakano bloodline.
Wail! Wail! Wail!
A chorus of high-decibel sirens suddenly tore through the night sky outside, accompanied by the bright, pulsing red and blue searchlights of incoming armored transports. The arrival of the H.U.S.—the Hero United Society, the world’s premiere meta-capable law enforcement organization—echoed across the quiet neighborhood.
“Perimeter breach at the Nakano residence! All units, move in!” amplified voices boomed from the street.
The figure paused, the yellow glow of their eyes narrowing toward the shattered front door. The intruder glanced over at Freda’s fallen form, their eyes flashing with that strange, fiery light once more. In a burst of wind, the masked figure shot upward through the collapsed ceiling and out into the stormy night sky, vanishing into the clouds before the authorities could breach the perimeter.
Left alone in the quiet wreckage, seven-year-old Chase lay on the floor, staring up at the empty, shattered roof as sirens filled the air, the warmth of his childhood completely extinguished in a matter of minutes.
