Capítulo 1: Antesala

24 de agosto de 1887, Ciudad de México. Mixcoac. 5:30 de la mañana.

El cielo aún era un lienzo gris cuando Matilde Montoya abrió los ojos. No había dormido bien. Las sábanas estaban enredadas alrededor de sus piernas, y el sudor de la noche se había secado en su frente dejando un rastro salado. Afuera, un gallo cantó tres veces, y el sonido se perdió en la distancia como un eco de otro siglo.

La casa era pequeña, de una sola planta, con paredes de adobe y un techo de tejas que goteaba cuando llovía. Su madre la había comprado años atrás, cuando todavía tenían algo de dinero. Ahora, la hipoteca pesaba sobre Matilde como una losa.

Se levantó y caminó hasta la ventana. El patio trasero estaba cubierto de hierbas medicinales: manzanilla, ruda, menta, hierbabuena. Su madre las había plantado cuando la enfermedad aún le permitía moverse. Ahora, las plantas crecían solas, salvajes, como si la vida se empeñara en continuar sin ella.

—Matilde.

La voz se escuchaba débil, apenas un susurro en el viento. Matilde se giró logró ver a su madre en la cama, envuelta en las mantas como un fantasma.

—Mamá. No deberías estar despierta. Aún es temprano.

Soledad Lafragua sonrió. Su rostro era un mapa de arrugas y sufrimiento, pero sus ojos seguían brillando con la misma intensidad que antes.

—Hoy es tu día.

Matilde se acercó a la cama y sintió la mano de su madre. Los dedos de Soledad eran huesudos, fríos, como ramas secas en invierno.

—¿Cómo te sientes? —preguntó Matilde, aunque sabía la respuesta.

—¿Cómo me veo? —dijo Soledad, y su risa se volvía una tos ronca—. Pero no importa. Hoy no importa.

—Mamá...

—No, Matilde. Escúchame. —dijo Soledad intentando alcanzar la mano de Matilde—. Tú has luchado toda tu vida para llegar a este momento.

Matilde hablo con un nudo en la garganta.

—Te oigo, mamá.

—Bien. Ahora, vístete. Tienes que irte.

—Pero...

—Vístete —repitió—. Y no te preocupes por mí. Yo estoy bien. Estaré bien cuando vuelvas y me digas que lo lograste.

Matilde asintió, aunque sabía que era una mentira y ambas lo sabían. Pero no podían decirlo en voz alta.

Se levantó y fue al baño. El agua de la jofaina estaba fría, y el jabón era un trozo de sebo. Se lavó la cara, los brazos, el cuello. El agua helada la despertó, le devolvió la claridad.

Luego se vistió. El vestido de lana gris, el mismo de siempre. Los zapatos negros, gastados en la suela. El pañuelo blanco bordado a mano, el mismo que su madre le había regalado cuando cumplió dieciséis años.

—Póntelo siempre cuando estés nerviosa —le había dicho Soledad—. Es como si yo estuviera contigo.

Matilde se lo puso alrededor del cuello. La tela era suave, gastada por el uso. Olía a lavanda y a años de recuerdos.

Volvió a la habitación. Matilde percibió a su madre y alcanzo a escuchar a lo lejos.

—Estás hermosa, hija.

—Estoy aterrorizada.

—Lo sé. Pero lo harás bien. Siempre lo has hecho.

—Vuelvo pronto.

—Te espero.
