Chapter One
Where Our Hearts Meet
The river had always been Lillie’s favorite place.
There was something about the gentle sound of the water flowing over the stones that made the world feel quieter. Out here, there were no questions from her parents, no expectations from relatives, no whispers from neighbors.
Just the river.
The trees.
And him.
Elvis sat beside her on the smooth, sun-warmed rocks, his legs stretched out in front of him. He wore a simple black T-shirt and faded jeans, looking completely at ease as he watched the water move.
Lillie sat close beside him in her floral flare dress, her fingers resting gently beside his.
Neither of them spoke for a while.
They didn't need to.
Sometimes silence said the things words were too afraid to admit.
Elvis slowly turned his head toward her.
She was smiling.
Not the smile she gave everyone else.
This one was softer.
Realer.
The kind that made something inside his chest tighten.
"You've been quiet today," he said.
Lillie glanced at him. "Maybe I'm enjoying the peace."
"Or maybe you're thinking too much again."
She laughed softly. "You know me too well."
"Maybe I do."
Their eyes met.
For a moment, neither looked away.
Then Lillie lowered her gaze, suddenly aware of how close they were sitting.
They weren't supposed to be this close.
Not according to their families.
Not according to the people who knew them.
And definitely not according to the future everyone had already planned for them.
They were young.
Marriage was still years away.
There were studies to finish, dreams to chase, families to make proud.
So what they felt was something they kept hidden.
A secret tucked carefully between ordinary conversations and innocent smiles.
Elvis moved his hand slightly until his fingers touched hers.
Lillie looked down.
Then at him.
"You know we shouldn't," she whispered.
"I know."
"Then why do you keep doing it?"
He smiled faintly.
"Because every time I try to stay away from you, I miss you more."
Her smile disappeared.
Not because she was unhappy.
Because his words had reached somewhere deep inside her.
She had tried to convince herself that whatever existed between them was temporary.
A passing feeling.
A beautiful mistake.
Something that would disappear if they ignored it long enough.
But it hadn't disappeared.
It had grown.
Quietly.
Day by day.
Until she could no longer tell where her thoughts ended and his began.
Lillie looked toward the river.
"What are we, Elvis?"
He didn't answer immediately.
The question seemed too big for such a peaceful afternoon.
Finally, he said, "I don't know."
She looked at him.
"But I know what I feel."
Her heart skipped.
"And what do you feel?"
He looked directly into her eyes.
"Like somehow, my heart found yours before I even realized I was looking for it."
Lillie stared at him, unable to find a response.
The river continued flowing beside them.
The wind moved gently through the trees.
And somewhere between the sound of the water and the warmth of his hand around hers, Lillie realized something frightening.
She was falling in love.
Not loudly.
Not recklessly.
But slowly.
Deeply.
And completely.
She squeezed his hand.
"Nobody can know," she whispered.
Elvis nodded.
"Nobody."
Their eyes met again.
It was a promise neither of them said aloud.
For now, their love would belong only to them.
Hidden from their families.
Hidden from their friends.
Hidden from the world.
Two hearts beating quietly beneath the same sky.
Two people who were not yet ready for forever...
But who had already found something that felt like it.
