Chapter 1
BOOK 1 - PART 1
CHAPTER 1: The Last Tests
The aroma of fried chicken filled the laboratory.
Daniel glanced at the clock on the wall. It was almost midnight.
He sighed and leaned back in his chair. He had been working for nearly six hours without taking a proper break, but the prototype on the table in front of him was finally beginning to behave the way he wanted.
A small metallic device rested inside a transparent chamber. Thin cables connected it to several monitors, while streams of numbers moved rapidly across the screens.
Daniel rubbed his tired eyes.
“One more test,” he muttered.
A calm female voice came from the speakers.
“Sir, you’ve said that three times in the last hour.”
Daniel smiled.
“You’ve been counting?”
“I count everything.”
He chuckled.
“Sometimes I wonder if I created an assistant or a supervisor.”
“My records indicate that you created me to assist you.”
Daniel looked toward the main monitor.
“Don’t remind me.”
The voice belonged to ARIA, the artificial intelligence system Daniel had developed over several years. ARIA was designed to assist him with research, calculations, laboratory systems, and the analysis of complex scientific data.
She wasn’t perfect. Daniel knew that.
But she had become an important part of his work.
Daniel turned back to the prototype.
“ARIA, begin the final energy test.”
“Beginning test.”
The machine hummed softly.
Numbers began appearing across the screen.
Daniel leaned closer.
“Increase the output by three percent.”
“Output increased.”
The device vibrated.
Daniel’s eyes widened.
“Hold it there.”
The numbers stabilized.
A smile slowly appeared on his face.
“Finally.”
He reached for his notebook.
“This could work.”
Then everything went dark.
The monitors went off.
The laboratory fell completely silent.
Daniel froze.
He looked around.
“ARIA?”
There was no response.
He waited a few seconds.
“ARIA?”
The emergency lights should have come on automatically, but they didn’t.
Daniel stood up and walked toward the control panel.
“That’s strange.”
He pressed the power button.
Nothing happened.
He checked the main electrical system. The readings were normal.
“ARIA, run a diagnostic.”
Nothing.
Daniel frowned.
“ARIA,” seconds passed before her voice finally came through the speakers.
“I can hear you.”
Daniel released a breath.
“Good. What happened?”
“I am unable to determine the cause of the power interruption.”
Daniel stared at the control panel.
“What?”
“The laboratory’s primary power supply stopped unexpectedly. However, the system is not reporting an electrical fault.”
Daniel’s expression changed.
“That’s impossible.”
“I agree that the readings are unusual.”
Daniel picked up his phone and switched on the flashlight.
He walked toward the main electrical cabinet.
Then he smelled smoke.
He stopped.
“ARIA.”
“Yes, Sir?”
“Do you detect smoke?”
There was a brief silence.
“Yes.”
Daniel’s heart began to beat faster.
“Where?”
“Approximately twelve meters behind you.”
Daniel turned.
A thin line of smoke was rising from beneath the door leading to the storage room.
He rushed toward it.
When he opened the door, a burst of heat struck his face.
Daniel stumbled backward.
Flames were already climbing the wall.
“Get the fire suppression system online!”
“I am attempting to activate it.”
Nothing happened.
Daniel stared at the flames.
“ARIA?”
“The suppression system is not responding.”
His eyes widened.
“Why?”
“I don’t know.”
The fire spread rapidly.
Daniel ran toward the laboratory’s main control panel and grabbed the emergency switch.
“Come on!”
He pulled it.
Nothing.
A loud crack came from behind him.
Daniel turned just as a section of the ceiling collapsed.
He jumped away.
The prototype.
His eyes immediately went to the machine on the table.
Years of research were inside that laboratory.
Years of sacrifice.
His future.
Daniel ran toward it.
“Sir, the temperature is rising rapidly,” ARIA warned.
“I know.”
“You need to leave.”
“I’m not leaving without it.”
“Your safety is at risk.”
Daniel grabbed the prototype.
The flames were now spreading across the ceiling.
He held the machine tightly against his chest and ran toward the exit.
Then he heard a loud explosion behind him.
The force threw him to the floor.
For a few seconds, Daniel couldn’t hear anything.
He slowly lifted his head.
The laboratory was engulfed in flames.
His life’s work was disappearing before his eyes.
He crawled toward the exit.
Outside, he collapsed onto the ground, coughing heavily.
Within minutes, the fire had consumed most of the building.
Daniel sat there in silence, staring at the flames.
The laboratory he had spent years building was gone.
But something bothered him.
The fire had started in the storage room.
The electrical system had shown no fault.
And the emergency systems had mysteriously failed.
Daniel looked back at the burning building.
“ARIA?”
Her voice came from the small device still attached to his wrist.
“Yes?”
“Tell me exactly what happened tonight.”
There was a pause.
“I don’t have enough information to determine the cause.”
Daniel stared at the flames.
For the first time in years, he felt completely helpless.
He didn’t know it yet, but the fire had not only destroyed his company.
It had changed the direction of his entire life.
And somewhere in the darkness beyond the burning building, someone was watching.
CHAPTER 2 — A New Beginning
The fire burned until the early hours of the morning.
Daniel sat on the ground several metres away from the building, his clothes covered in soot. The cold night air did little to calm him.
He watched firefighters move around the remains of his laboratory.
There was almost nothing left.
The building that had once represented years of hard work, sacrifice, and ambition had been reduced to a blackened shell.
Daniel lowered his head.
Everything was gone.
His research.
His equipment.
His documents.
His company.
His future.
Almost everything.
He looked down at the small metallic device lying beside him.
The prototype.
The only major invention he had managed to save.
Daniel picked it up carefully.
At least this survived.
“Sir?”
Daniel looked at the device attached to his wrist.
“Yes, ARIA?”
“The emergency services have completed their initial assessment.”
Daniel stared at the burning remains.
“What did they say?”
“They believe the fire may have originated from an electrical fault.”
Daniel’s expression hardened.
“An electrical fault?”
“Yes, Sir.”
He slowly shook his head.
“No.”
There was a brief silence.
“Why do you disagree, Sir?”
Daniel looked toward the remains of the laboratory.
“Because there wasn’t one.”
“Your conclusion is based on the electrical readings recorded before the incident?”
“Exactly.”
Daniel stood up.
“Show me the last recorded readings.”
A small display appeared on his wrist.
Numbers appeared across the screen.
Daniel studied them carefully.
The power system had been operating normally.
No abnormal voltage.
No overload.
No short circuit.
Nothing.
He scrolled through the data.
Then he stopped.
“ARIA.”
“Yes, Sir?”
“Go back thirty seconds before the power went out.”
The data shifted.
Daniel stared at the screen.
His eyes narrowed.
“What’s this?”
“Please clarify, Sir.”
“There.”
He pointed at a small change in the system readings.
“It happened just before the power went out.”
ARIA analyzed the information.
“That fluctuation lasted approximately 0.8 seconds.”
“Was it caused by the electrical system?”
“I cannot confirm that.”
Daniel frowned.
“Can you determine what caused it?”
“I require additional data.”
Daniel looked toward the remains of his laboratory.
“Of course you do.”
He put the device into his pocket.
The firefighters were beginning to leave.
Daniel remained where he was.
A few minutes later, a firefighter approached him.
“Sir?”
Daniel turned.
“We’re sorry about what happened. There isn’t much left to recover.”
Daniel nodded.
“Did you find where the fire started?”
The firefighter hesitated.
“According to the initial assessment, it appears to have started near the storage room.”
Daniel’s eyes narrowed.
“The storage room?”
“Yes.”
Daniel looked back at the building.
“Was there anything dangerous stored there?”
“Nothing that should have caused a fire of this size.”
Daniel said nothing.
The firefighter walked away.
Daniel stood alone.
The storage room.
The failed suppression system.
The strange electrical reading.
None of it made sense.
His phone suddenly rang.
Daniel looked at the screen.
It was his business manager.
He answered.
“Hello?”
“Daniel, I’ve been trying to reach you.”
“I know.”
“How bad is it?”
Daniel looked at the ruins.
“Everything is gone.”
There was silence on the other end.
“What are you going to do?”
Daniel looked at the prototype in his hand.
He had no laboratory.
No office.
No money to rebuild.
But he still had his knowledge.
And he still had the one invention that had survived the fire.
“I’ll start again.”
His manager sighed.
“With what money?”
Daniel didn’t answer immediately.
“I don’t know.”
“Daniel—”
“I said I’ll start again.”
He ended the call.
For several seconds, he stared at the dark screen.
Then ARIA spoke.
“Sir?”
“What is it?”
“I have detected an unusual signal.”
Daniel looked up.
“From where?”
“The western side of the property.”
His eyes moved toward the darkness.
“What kind of signal?”
“I cannot identify it.”
Daniel became alert.
“Can you locate it?”
“Approximately seventy metres from your current position.”
Daniel looked toward the trees behind the property.
“Is someone there?”
“I cannot confirm that, Sir.”
Daniel took a few steps forward.
The night was silent.
Then he saw something.
A small red light.
It disappeared almost immediately.
Daniel stopped.
“ARIA.”
“Yes, Sir?”
“Did you see that?”
“I detected a brief light source.”
Daniel stared into the darkness.
“Could it be a camera?”
“Possible.”
He stood still for several seconds.
Then the light appeared again.
This time, Daniel saw a shadow moving between the trees.
Someone was there.
Watching him.
Daniel took a step forward.
The shadow suddenly disappeared.
He ran toward the trees.
“Sir, I advise caution.”
Daniel ignored the warning.
By the time he reached the spot, there was nobody there.
Only a small object lay on the ground.
Daniel picked it up.
It was a black metal casing, barely larger than his palm.
He turned it over.
There was a symbol engraved on the back.
Daniel stared at it.
He had seen that symbol before.
But he couldn’t remember where.
“Sir,” ARIA said quietly.
Daniel looked at the device.
“What?”
“I believe you should return home.”
“Why?”
ARIA paused.
“Because someone may have known you were here.”
Daniel looked back at the ruins of his laboratory.
For the first time that night, he wondered if the fire had really been an accident.
And if it wasn’t...
Who had wanted his company destroyed?
And why?
CHAPTER 3:The Mysterious Invitation
Three weeks had passed since the fire.
Daniel stood in front of a small rented office, staring at the faded sign above the entrance.
It was nothing like the building he had lost.
The office was small, the walls were bare, and there were only two rooms inside. There was no sophisticated laboratory, no expensive equipment, and no team of researchers waiting for him.
But it was a beginning.
Daniel unlocked the door and stepped inside.
He placed a small bag on the desk and looked around.
“This will do.”
ARIA’s voice came from the device on his wrist.
“Are you certain, Sir?”
Daniel smiled faintly.
“No.”
There was a short pause.
“But I’m going to make it work.”
He opened his bag and removed his laptop.
The machine was old compared with the equipment he had once owned, but it still worked.
Daniel connected it to a small monitor and switched it on.
Within seconds, ARIA’s interface appeared on the screen.
Daniel sat down.
“Let’s see what we still have.”
“I have preserved the research files that were stored on the protected system, Sir.”
Daniel looked up.
“You saved them?”
“Yes, Sir.”
A smile appeared on his face.
“ARIA, you just made my day.”
“I am pleased to hear that, Sir.”
Daniel laughed softly.
For the first time since the fire, he felt a small amount of hope.
He opened the research files.
Most of his work was still there.
His calculations.
His designs.
His experiments.
And the incomplete project he had been working on the night of the fire.
Daniel opened the file.
The prototype appeared on the screen.
He studied the design carefully.
“This is where we start.”
“Sir, may I make an observation?”
“Go ahead.”
“The prototype was operating outside its original safety parameters shortly before the power interruption.”
Daniel frowned.
“What do you mean?”
“I detected an increase in energy consumption shortly before the laboratory lost power.”
Daniel leaned closer to the screen.
“How much?”
“Approximately eleven percent.”
Daniel stared at the numbers.
“That’s impossible.”
“I recorded the data.”
“Could the reading have been an error?”
“I cannot rule that out.”
Daniel sat back.
Something wasn’t right.
He had designed the system himself. He knew exactly how it behaved.
An unexplained increase in energy consumption.
A power failure.
A fire.
And a mysterious device found outside the laboratory.
He rubbed his forehead.
“ARIA, do you still have the recording from the night of the fire?”
“Yes, Sir.”
“Play it.”
The screen changed.
Daniel watched the final thirty seconds before the power went out.
The readings moved across the screen.
Everything looked normal.
Then—
There.
Daniel stopped the recording.
“Go back.”
ARIA replayed it.
He watched again.
A tiny change appeared on one of the monitors.
Daniel zoomed in.
“What’s that?”
“I am analyzing it, Sir.”
The numbers disappeared as the system enlarged the section.
Daniel stared at the screen.
A signal had entered the laboratory’s network.
It lasted less than one second.
“Can you identify the source?”
“I am attempting to determine that.”
Daniel waited.
A few seconds passed.
Then ARIA spoke.
“The source cannot be identified.”
Daniel frowned.
“Why?”
“The signal contains no registered identification.”
“Could it have come from outside the laboratory?”
“Possibly.”
Daniel stood up.
“Can you track where it came from?”
“I would need additional information.”
Daniel sighed.
“Of course.”
He walked toward the window.
Outside, people moved along the street. Cars passed. Shops opened for the day.
Life had continued as if nothing had happened.
But Daniel’s life had changed completely.
His company was gone.
His savings were almost finished.
His employees had moved on.
And he had no idea who had destroyed everything he built.
There was a knock at the door.
Daniel turned.
A young man entered.
“Good morning.”
“Good morning.”
The man looked around the small office.
“So this is the new place?”
Daniel nodded.
“For now.”
The man smiled.
“I heard what happened. I’m sorry.”
“Thank you.”
“I’ve been looking for you.”
Daniel raised an eyebrow.
“Why?”
The man handed him an envelope.
“You have an interview.”
Daniel looked at him.
“An interview?”
“Yes. A company is looking for someone with your background.”
Daniel opened the envelope.
There was an address inside.
He read the name of the company.
His expression changed slightly.
It was one of the most successful technology companies in the city.
“Who recommended me?”
The man smiled.
“That’s the interesting part.”
Daniel looked up.
“What do you mean?”
“They didn’t say.”
The man turned toward the door.
“Your interview is tomorrow morning.”
After he left, Daniel continued staring at the envelope.
ARIA spoke.
“Sir?”
“Yes?”
“Would you like me to investigate the company?”
Daniel looked at the company name again.
“Not yet.”
He placed the envelope on the desk.
“I need a job.”
“Understood, Sir.”
Daniel looked at the prototype on his screen.
He knew taking another job wasn’t part of his original plan.
His dream was to rebuild his own company.
But dreams required money.
And right now, he had very little of it.
He closed the laptop.
“Tomorrow, we start again.”
“Yes, Sir.”
Daniel walked toward the window.
Neither he nor ARIA knew that the interview would change everything.
Because the woman who owned that company was about to become the most important person in his life.
And she had already heard about Daniel long before he ever heard her name.
CHAPTER 4 - The Woman Behind The Company
The following morning, Daniel arrived at the company ten minutes before his scheduled interview.
He stood outside the enormous glass building and looked up.
The company’s name was written across the front in polished silver letters:
Aurelia Technologies.
Daniel had heard of the company before. It was involved in artificial intelligence, advanced energy systems, robotics, and several other areas of technology.
It was far larger than the company he had lost.
Daniel adjusted his shirt and walked through the entrance.
A receptionist looked up.
“Good morning. How may I help you?”
“I’m here for an interview.”
“Your name?”
“Daniel.”
She checked the computer.
“Daniel... Yes. You’re expected.”
She pointed toward the elevators.
“Twenty-second floor.”
“Thank you.”
Daniel entered the elevator.
As the doors closed, ARIA spoke quietly through the device on his wrist.
“Your heart rate is slightly elevated, Sir.”
Daniel glanced at his wrist.
“You can stop monitoring me.”
“I was only making an observation.”
“I know.”
He smiled.
“It’s my first interview since losing my company.”
“Your qualifications remain unchanged, Sir.”
Daniel looked at the elevator display.
“I wish confidence worked that way.”
The elevator doors opened.
A young woman was waiting outside.
“Mr. Daniel?”
“Yes.”
“I’m Amelia, the company’s human resources manager. Please follow me.”
Daniel followed her down a long corridor.
Employees moved quickly between offices. Large screens displayed technological projects, research statistics, and company announcements.
Daniel couldn’t help looking around.
This wasn’t simply a technology company.
It was a serious research organization.
Amelia stopped outside a large office.
“She’s waiting for you.”
Daniel looked at the door.
“She?”
Amelia smiled.
“Yes.”
She knocked.
A calm voice answered from inside.
“Come in.”
Amelia opened the door.
Daniel stepped inside.
A woman stood near the large window overlooking the city.
She wore a simple dark suit, and her long hair fell naturally over her shoulders.
She turned around.
For a moment, neither of them spoke.
Daniel had expected the owner of a company this large to be much older.
Instead, the woman standing before him looked to be around his age.
“Mr. Daniel,” she said.
“Yes.”
She extended her hand.
“I’m Sophia Williams.”
Daniel shook her hand.
“Nice to meet you.”
Sophia studied him for a moment.
“I’ve heard quite a lot about you.”
Daniel’s expression changed.
“From whom?”
“People in the technology industry.”
She gestured toward a chair.
“Please sit.”
Daniel sat.
Sophia took the seat opposite him.
“I read about your company.”
Daniel’s face became serious.
“Then you probably know what happened.”
“I do.”
A brief silence followed.
“I’m sorry,” Sophia said.
Daniel nodded.
“Thank you.”
Sophia opened a folder.
“Your academic record is impressive. Your previous research is even more impressive.”
She looked directly at him.
“But I want to know something.”
“What?”
“Why are you applying for a job?”
Daniel didn’t answer immediately.
He looked down at his hands.
“Because I lost everything.”
Sophia remained silent.
“I spent years building my company,” Daniel continued. “Then one night, it was gone.”
“And you want to rebuild it?”
“Eventually.”
Sophia raised an eyebrow.
“Eventually?”
Daniel smiled slightly.
“Immediately, if I can afford it.”
Sophia couldn’t help smiling.
“You’re very honest.”
“I don’t see the point in pretending.”
She closed the folder.
“Suppose I offer you a position here.”
Daniel looked at her.
“What position?”
“Senior Research and Development Engineer.”
Daniel’s expression remained calm, but inside, he was surprised.
“Why me?”
“Because I believe you’re capable of contributing something this company needs.”
Daniel leaned back.
“What exactly do you need?”
Sophia smiled.
“Someone who can solve problems other people don’t understand.”
Daniel considered her words.
“And what makes you think I’m that person?”
Sophia’s smile disappeared.
“Because I read your research.”
Daniel studied her.
There was something unusual about the way she looked at him.
It wasn’t simply professional interest.
There was curiosity there.
Maybe even admiration.
But Daniel pushed the thought away.
Sophia stood.
“Come with me.”
Daniel followed her out of the office.
They walked through several corridors until they reached a large research laboratory.
Sophia opened the door.
“This is one of our advanced research departments.”
Daniel stepped inside.
His eyes immediately moved across the equipment.
“Impressive.”
“You haven’t seen everything.”
Sophia walked toward one of the machines.
“We’ve been trying to improve the efficiency of this energy system for months.”
Daniel examined it.
“What’s the problem?”
“We can’t get it beyond eighty-seven percent efficiency without overheating.”
Daniel looked at the machine again.
“May I?”
Sophia nodded.
Daniel moved closer.
He studied the connections, the energy readings, and the cooling system.
After several minutes, he pointed toward one of the components.
“Who designed this?”
“One of our senior engineers.”
Daniel nodded.
“It’s good.”
Sophia waited.
“But?”
“The cooling system is responding too late.”
Sophia looked at the machine.
“What do you mean?”
“You’re trying to control the temperature after it rises. You should be predicting the rise before it happens.”
Sophia’s eyes narrowed.
“And how would you do that?”
Daniel smiled.
“With a better control algorithm.”
Sophia stared at him.
“You found the problem in less than ten minutes.”
Daniel shrugged.
“It wasn’t that difficult.”
Sophia smiled.
“You’re hired.”
Daniel blinked.
“What?”
“I said you’re hired.”
“You haven’t even asked about my salary.”
“I’ll let the finance department handle that.”
Daniel laughed softly.
Sophia turned toward the door.
“Welcome to Aurelia Technologies, Mr. Daniel.”
Daniel followed her.
Neither of them noticed the man standing at the far end of the corridor.
He had been watching them.
His expression hardened when Sophia smiled at Daniel.
He took out his phone.
“She’s hired him,” he said.
A voice answered from the other end.
“Are you sure?”
“Yes.”
“Then find out everything you can about him.”
The man looked toward Daniel.
“I will.”
He ended the call.
Inside the laboratory, Sophia turned toward Daniel.
“There’s one more thing.”
“What is it?”
“You’ll be working directly with me on some of our most important projects.”
Daniel nodded.
“Understood.”
Sophia smiled.
“Good.”
For reasons neither of them understood yet, that single conversation would become the beginning of something neither money nor power could easily destroy.
